The combination of Fluid Computing with the Internet of Things has enabled dynamic orchestration of tasks and functionalities, enhancing performance and responsiveness. Integrating Digital Twins has bridged the cyber-physical gap and the recent introduction of the concept of Fluid Digital Twins (FDTs) opened to the dynamic reconfiguration of functions and simplified augmentation of physical assets’ capabilities. However, introducing new functions or updating existing ones to improve performance or fix bugs poses significant challenges in validating, testing, and deploying these changes in a production environment without disrupting operations. This paper proposes and experimental evaluate an FDT approach for dynamic function management by spawning twin replicas for testing and automatically synchronizing data between production and validation instances.

The 2nd international workshop on Flexible Resource and Application Management on the Edge (FRAME 2022) is dedicated to the so-called Cloud/Edge Continuum, where Cloud and Edge infrastructures can work together to fulfill requirements from a variety of NextGen applications. Clouds provide appropriate levels of performance to large groups of different users, whereas Edge resources act as a first layer of computing capacity that is closer to the user, to reduce the service latency. With respect to Clouds, Edge infrastructures typically are composed of heterogeneous and constrained resources and introduce new challenges from the viewpoint of security, orchestration and resource management. Tackling these new issues calls for innovative combinations of tools and abstractions, where AI and machine learning techniques complement algorithmic orchestration and optimization, bringing about new levels of distributed adaptivity and self-management. As real-time data-driven decisions can be promptly taken on the spot, without the need to wait for data to travel to the Cloud and back, also interactive and time-sensitive services like the immersive data processing of Extended reality (XR) applications can be partially extended toward the edge, thus exploiting a better computation to communication tradeoff and smoother connections to improve their QoE and remote collaboration. In this article we present Out-of-order Discrete Event simulation (ODES), a solution for sequential style execution of DES models not following timestamp order. ODES ensures anyway the same identical simulation results as timestamp ordered execution, thanks to fully correct maintenance of the simulation model data flow. At the same time, it drastically reduces the memory boundedness—namely, the impact of cache misses and of stale CPU cycles—on the simulation model execution speed. Beyond presenting foundational concepts, we also discuss our ODES-engine implementation, based on the c programming language. Additionally, we report experimental data for comparing ODES with the classical timestamp ordered execution of simulation models according to conventional sequential simulation. The relevance of ODES compared to classical timestamp ordered sequential DES not only stands in its benefits on performance, rather ODES can also assume the role of new reference for determining the speedup achievable via parallel/distributed discrete event simulation systems, compared to the single thread execution. Also, thanks to its improvements in the interaction with RAM, ODES constitutes a new framework for effective parallel replication of simulation experiments on multi-processor/multi-core machines.

In this paper, we discuss a tie-breaking strategy based on a bitwise comparison of event payload that allows parallel and distributed discrete-event simulations to observe a deterministic order in the execution of events, even in the presence of event ties. This approach provides practical usability whenever model-assisted tie-breaking is unavailable, thus ensuring that multiple simulation executions provide deterministic behaviour and repeatable results. Moreover, it ensures that the selected order of events is also consistent with sequential executions. We discuss the theory behind this strategy and experimentally show that the performance drop is imputable to event queue management when relying on tie-breaking strategies like the ones discussed in this work.

Urban populations continue to grow, highlighting the critical need to safeguard civilians against potential disruptions, such as dangerous gas contaminant dispersion. The digital twin (DT) framework offers promise in analyzing and predicting such events. This study presents a computational framework for modeling airborne contaminant dispersion in built environments. Leveraging automated generation of computational domains and solution processes, the proposed framework solves the underlying physical model equations with the finite element method (FEM) for numerical solutions. Model order reduction (MOR) methods are investigated to enhance computational efficiency without compromising accuracy. The study outlines the automated mesh generation process, the details of the employed model, and the future perspectives for the realization of a DT. Throughout this research, the aim is to develop a reliable predictive model combining physics and data in a hybrid DT to provide informed real-time support within evacuation scenarios.

The dynamic data driven simulation (DDDS) is a simulation paradigm where the simulation is continuously influenced by fresh data sampled from the real system for better analysis and prediction of the system under study. Traditional DDDS operates in the “computation away from data” mode, which would incur long response time, high network bandwidth requirement, and critical information loss. This paper proposes a novel distributed dynamic data driven simulation paradigm. In this paradigm, each participated simulation models a portion of a system, while all the participants collectively model the whole system. Additionally, each simulation assimilates data collected locally to produce local state estimations, which are aggregated somehow to generate global state estimation. The proposed simulation paradigm is supposed to have properties such as shorter response time, lower network bandwidth requirement, and less information loss. Finally, a case is studied to illustrate the effectiveness of the novel simulation paradigm.

Facing the difficulties of large-scale networked satellite communication, such as unstable topology, diversified channel types, and uncertain satellite link failure, this paper proposes a general optimal routing path calculation method based on historical data prediction, and establishes a Statistical model based on historical data prediction for inter satellite communication transmission, which is not limited to transient failures caused by aging energy, storage, and load. At the same time, in the process of calculating the transmission rate and packet loss rate of the communication link, historical data is introduced to form a channel rate function that changes over time, which is used to achieve communication prediction within the transmission time and achieve self-sensing of the communication link's state. Based on the self-prediction state of the communication link, combined with the domain search algorithm, the maximum probability optimal solution of the long-term interactive routing process is considered to achieve real-time optimal solution for data transmission in the constellation of Jupiter in orbit. A simulation verification was conducted for a large number of randomly distributed routing applications in a short period of time, and parameters such as link stability, load capacity, and business time delay were compared with previous designs. The results show that the proposed method has good stability, which is more than 10% higher than previous designs;The link load is significantly lower compared to previous designs;Under the condition of a large number of routing applications, the service delay has been reduced by 27% compared to previous designs, ensuring routing communication under the time-varying topology of the constellation group. © 2023 IEEE.

The importance of simulation in motor-sport racing has steadily increased. Fine-tuning these simulators is complex and traditionally manual, relying on engineers’ *** study develops a virtual driver and automates a parameter tuning pipeline for a race car simulator. The virtual driver based on the Data-enabled Predictive Control (DeePC) algorithm outperforms traditional Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) and Model Predictive Control (MPC) controllers and can potentially be extended to compute an optimal trajectory.A YAML-configured optimization pipeline with a custom Domain-Specific Language (DSL) was developed to accelerate parameter tuning. However, parameter interdependency is problematic for traditional optimization algorithms. Bayesian optimization can potentially find a global minimum despite interdependencies and converge to the optimum faster than traditional optimization methods.

Designing and testing distributed systems can be a daunting task, especially when the system is composed of heterogeneous devices, it is expected to be robust to disruptions, and is meant to scale to a large number of nodes. In practice, this mandates the use of simulations to verify the system during development. Additionally, disruptions and disturbance patterns are hardly predictable, and the system’s behavior must thus be subject to test under widely varying conditions, typically implying a stochastic process and multiple simulation runs to assess whether the system meets its functional requirements. Often, running multiple simulations while a system is being developed is time- and resource-consuming, as results are visible and aggregated at termination, especially in cases in which simulations are distributed across multiple devices to speed up the computation. In this paper, we discuss a potential solution to monitor multiple distributed simulations, querying data efficiently while they progress, in order to provide early feedback to the developers. We present a general architecture for the system, discuss the technological opportunities and challenges, and provide a functional open-source prototype implementation based on a simulator used for several scientific exemplaries in the last decade.

simulations are an important part of Digital Twins due to their ability to forecast behavior of a physical asset or perform what-if analysis. Especially for products with long life cycles, there is a lack of sufficient data for the generation of such simulations and information has to be digitized in tedious manual work and adapted to state-of-the-art frameworks. Thus, there is the urgent need for automation of this process including the digitization and generation of simulations using these frameworks. In this work, we propose a workflow that is able to completely automate these steps by combining different digitization methods for in situ measurement data and engineering diagrams into one generalized system description form. From this system description a set of multiple simulations from different frameworks can be generated automatically. The workflow is successfully demonstrated with the example of two different frameworks for pedestrian flow simulations, one agent-based and one using finite element methods.
