In this article we present PARSIR (PARallel simulation Runner), a package that enables the effective exploitation of shared-memory multi-processor machines for running discrete event simulation models. PARSIR is a compile/run-time environment for discrete event simulation models developed with the C programming language. The architecture of PARSIR has been designed in order to keep low the amount of CPU-cycles required for running models. This is achieved via the combination of a set of techniques like: 1) causally consistent batch-processing of simulation events at an individual simulation object for caching effectiveness; 2) high likelihood of disjoint access parallelism; 3) the favoring of memory accesses on local NUMA (Non-Uniform-Memory-Access) nodes in the architecture, while still enabling well balanced workload distribution via work-stealing from remote nodes; 4) the use of RMW (Read-Modify-Write) machine instructions for fast access to simulation engine data required by the worker threads for managing the concurrent simulation objects and distributing the workload. Furthermore, any architectural solution embedded in the PARSIR engine is fully transparent to the application level code implementing the simulation model. We also provide experimental results showing the effectiveness of PARSIR when running the reference PHOLD benchmark on a NUMA shared-memory multi-processor machine equipped with 40 CPUs.

PCNs are a promising solution for overcoming blockchain limitations, such as scalability and privacy, yet understanding their behavior in large-scale deployments remains challenging. Currently, only custom and sequential simulators for PCNs exist, which are limited to evaluating small-scale networks. Parallel simulations could prove fundamental to understanding PCNs and gaining insights to develop payment systems, such as blockchain-based Central Bank Digital Currencies, capable of handling real-world payment loads effectively. We presented CLoTH-over-ROSS, a PCN model inspired by the CLoTH framework suited to run in ROSS, a popular parallel discrete event simulator. In this paper, through extensive experimentation, we investigate the model’s ability to scale as the number of available computing resources increases, highlighting its performance benefits and identifying critical bottlenecks that hinder the analysis of very large networks. These findings offer valuable insights for designing efficient and parallel PCN simulators, which can support the development of scalable blockchain-based solutions.

Leveraging multiple threads to process high volumes of simulation data is a prevalent strategy in modern streaming data processing systems. Statically binding operators to specific threads is the most common design employed due to its simplicity in implementation and initial system configuration. However, this approach often fails to effectively account for the inherently dynamic nature of simulation data, potentially leading to inefficient resource utilisation and processing bottlenecks. To address these limitations, we present a novel mechanism for stream-processing operator rebinding that enables lock-free, dynamic workload rebalancing between worker threads. The rebinding is driven by an autonomic policy that captures workload imbalance in the stream-processing pipeline when multiple queries are computed and reacts to it by moving computation around the different threads. We evaluate our proposal using data generated from large-scale traffic simulations on which multiple queries are executed. The volume and organisation of the data we feed to the stream-processing pipeline significantly change over time, providing excellent grounds to evaluate our rebinding policy. The evaluation confirms that the performance of stream processing pipelines can be greatly improved using local operator rebinding.

Traffic management centres worldwide are facing unprecedented challenges from traffic incidents, impacting congestion, delays, pollution, and costs. Congested roads during peak hours are prone to accidents, causing significant disruptions and delays. Non-recurrent congestion such as accidents, occur unexpectedly and are major contributors to delays while disruptions in public transportation lead to increased demand for alternative modes thereby causing severe congestion. Understanding the impact of these incidents on multi-modal traffic networks is crucial for developing effective response plans. This study addresses the limitations of using only historical data to run simulations in advance. The proposed architecture enables optimized simulations with real-time inputs and accurate parameter prediction for improved response planning. This work provides a foundational proof of concept for utilizing minimal real-time data for accurate simulations of dynamic traffic behaviours through a Singapore case study. Future research can focus on comparative analysis methods, optimization strategies, and incorporating pedestrian effects. These advancements will aid transport authorities in making informed decisions for infrastructure and route planning.

Virtual reality (VR), together with the network infrastructure, can provide an interactive and immersive experience for multiple users simultaneously and thus enables collaborative VR applications (e.g., VR-based classroom). However, the satisfactory user experience requires not only high-resolution panoramic image rendering but also extremely low latency and seamless user experience. Besides, the competition for limited network resources (e.g., multiple users share the total limited bandwidth) poses a significant challenge to collaborative user experience, in particular under the wireless network with time-varying capacities. While existing works have tackled some of these challenges, a principled design considering all those factors is still missing. In this paper, we formulate a combinatorial optimization problem to maximize the Quality of Experience (QoE), defined as the linear combination of the quality, the average VR content delivery delay, and variance of the quality over a finite time horizon. In particular, we incorporate the influence of imperfect motion prediction when considering the quality of the perceived contents. However, the optimal solution to this problem can not be implemented in real-time since it relies on future decisions. Then, we decompose the optimization problem into a series of combinatorial optimization in each time slot and develop a low-complexity algorithm that can achieve at least 1 / 2 of the optimal value. Despite this, the trace-based simulation results reveal that our algorithm performs very close to the decomposed optimal offline solution. Furthermore, we implement our proposed algorithm in a practical system with commercial mobile devices and demonstrate its superior performance over state-of-the-art algorithms. Multilevel modeling is a design technique that allows complex models to be specified in terms of simpler ones. An obvious advantage of multilevel modeling is the possibility of reusing existing models, therefore reducing development cost. However, multilevel modeling entails more than the mere application of the ubiquitous principle of decomposition. Indeed, in a multilevel model the same entity may be described at different levels of detail during execution. This allows, for example, to focus on areas of interest by switching to a more detailed model, and revert back to a faster but less accurate one when possible. In this paper we propose GEMMA (GEneric Multilevel Modeling Abstraction), a methodology inspired by DEVS that can help the designer to produce sound and correct multilevel models. We propose a practical realization of GEMMA as a concrete software architecture that can be instantiated in different programming languages. We illustrate a simple use case where different sub-models written in different programming languages are combined according to the GEMMA methodology. Our ultimate goal is to bridge the gap between theory and practice of multilevel modeling, to foster a broader adoption of this useful technique.

A one-shot algorithm called iterationless DANSE (iDANSE) is introduced to perform distributed adaptive node-specific signal estimation (DANSE) in a fully connected wireless acoustic sensor network (WASN) deployed in an environment with non-overlapping latent signal subspaces. The iDANSE algorithm matches the performance of a centralized algorithm in a single processing cycle while devices exchange fused versions of their multichannel local microphone signals. Key iterationless nature, which favors deployment in real-time applications, and the fact that devices can exchange fewer fused signals than the number of latent sources in the environment. The proposed method is validated in numerical simulations including a speech enhancement scenario.

The capability to accurately simulate the behavior of a racing car is paramount in modern-day racing competitions to quickly find a good base setup to kick-start the work on track. Typically, a professional driver is employed to drive the simulated race car and provide feedback. However, this operation is expensive and time-consuming, as capable human drivers quickly become a bottleneck. In conjunction with highly accurate simulations of the physical car’s behavior, a capable virtual driver could thus accelerate the car setup and development to a great extent. In this paper, we propose to apply a data-driven predictive control approach called Data-enabled Predictive Control to model a racing driver by tracking a pre-defined trajectory. We compare our proposed approach with an industrial first-choice Proportional-Integral-Derivative controller and state-of-the-art Model Predictive Control controller, finding that the approach is feasible, and it can provide significant improvements over the state-of-the-art, especially for trajectories whose feasibility is at the edge of the car’s capabilities.

The end of Moore's law has placed a two-fold demand on hardware simulation. Firstly, efficient co-design requires fast simulation of hardware systems in order to vet proposed designs. Secondly, modern simulator platforms need to become increasingly concurrent as well. To address these challenges, we develop an optimistic time warp-based parallelization for the Structural simulation Toolkit (SST). Our optimistic PDES engine hides synchronization costs by speculatively executing tasks, leading to better compute resource utilization on modern multicore architectures. Given the significant engineering effort to make custom existing hardware models reversible, we also develop a new SST component, called escher. The escher workflow instruments arbitrary SST applications and replays event traces through the different SST parallelizations. This is a useful tool for hardware engineers who want to understand the benefits of optimistic parallelization before undertaking the significant software engineering effort to make their hardware models reversible. We demonstrate this workflow by generating traces for a tiled mesh-NOC architecture and show a 2.1x to 3.7x speed-up using our optimistic SST parallelization versus the current conservative SST parallelization.

Checkpointing techniques for speculative parallel simulation of discrete event models have been widely studied in the literature. However, there has been a very marginal attempt to exploit operating system page-protection services, which have instead been largely exploited in the context of checkpointing for fault tolerance. In this article, we discuss how these services can effectively manage simulation models with large states and write-intensive events in zones of the state layout. In particular, we present a solution where the correlation of write operations on buddy pages in the state layout can be exploited to achieve effective incremental checkpointing support, which allows scaling down the costs of operating system services. Our solution does not require any instrumentation of the simulation application code and is usable on any Posix-compliant operating system. We also discuss its integration within the USE (Ultimate-Share-Everything) open-source speculative simulation package and report some experimental data for its assessment.
