Computer simulations of very large many-particle systems open the door to the solution and better understanding of a variety of relevant problems in statistical mechanics such as nonlinear systems, phase transitions, critical phenomena, percolation and fractals. The interactive Molecular Dynamics System (IMDS) is an abject-oriented toolkit that allows one to simulate and visualize various physical systems in real-time. Computationally intensive tasks are performed using Parallel distributed Computing (PDC) on a cluster of workstations and are based on efficient spatial domain decomposition techniques.

The ability to reserve real-time connections in advance is essential in all distributed multiparty applications (i.e., applications involving multiple human beings) using a network that controls admissions to provide good quality of service. This paper discusses the requirements of the clients of an advance reservation service, and a distributed design for such a service. The design is described within the context of the Tenet real-time Protocol Suite 2, a suite being developed for multiparty communication, which will offer advance reservation capabilities to its clients, based on the principles and the mechanisms proposed in the paper. simulation results providing useful data about the performance and some of the properties of these mechanisms are also presented. We conclude that the one described here is a viable approach to constructing an advance reservation service within the context of the Tenet Suites as well as that of other solutions to the multiparty real-time communication problem.

A wide range of General Purpose High-Energy Physics applications, ranging from Monte carlo simulation to data acquisition, from interactive data analysis to on-line filtering, have been ported, or developed, and run in parallel on IBM SP-2 and Meiko CS-2 CERN large multi-processor machines. The ESPRIT project GP-MIMD2 has been a catalyst for the interest in parallel computing at CERN. The project provided the 128 processors Meiko CS-2 system that is now succesfully integrated in the CERN computing environment. The CERN experiment NA48 was involved in the GP-MIMD2 project since the beginning. NA48 physicists run, as part of their day-to-day work, simulation and analysis programs parallelized using the Message Passing Interface MPI. The CS-2 is also a vital component of the experiment Data Acquisition System and will be used to calibrate in real-time the 13 000 channels liquid krypton calorimeter.

distributed networked multimedia information systems are expected to play a major role in the information age of today. Presentation of multimedia information requires temporal synchronization within and among different objects. Network heterogeneity, resource constraints, and random traffic characteristics necessitate intelligent mechanisms for synchronized presentation of multimedia data in distributed multimedia systems. The computational complexity of any such synchronization method has to be small for real-time presentation. We use intelligent scheduling procedures to guarantee intra-stream and inter-stream synchronization under network resource constraints. We use the notion of quality of presentation for multimedia data to evaluate the effectiveness of these scheduling algorithms for different resource instances. In this paper, we present two lour complexity (O(n log n), where n is the total number of multimedia presentation units to be scheduled) heuristic scheduling algorithms for real-dime applications. We have implemented these algorithms on an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network testbed and in this paper discuss their performance with respect do two different quality parameters.

In distributed hard real-timeapplications, there is a need for a temporal analysis to evaluate and optimise a design with respect to the deadlines. The key way is the scheduling analysis of such applications that means the schedulability not only of its tasks but of its messages too. In this paper, we present a schedulability analysis which allows to determine the timing parameters of messages and to update those of tasks. Given an initial task set, characterized by temporal attributes, and network interactions, this methodology permits us to produce valid execution sequences and to evaluate the relevant timing factors. simulation results done with CAN and FDDI protocols are deduced.
