Advanced distributed simulation (ADS) is an enabling concept to support the networked interaction of models and real-world elements resident at geographically dispersed sites planned for next-generation simulation environments such as the Joint simulation System (JSIMS). In this paper, we review the DEVS (discrete event systems specification) formalism and indicate why it provides the right framework to address many of the difficult technical issues that must be solved to enable ADS to provide infrastructures for distributed simulation. Then we address two of these issues in detail. The first issue addressed is the use of filtering and predictive contracts to reduce the tremendous amounts of data and control messages that must be transmitted in simulations. The second part focuses on scheduling and synchronization mechanisms for the efficient parallel execution of such models.

Presents an experimental approach toward designing a language interface for fine-grained parallel algorithms simulation. The deep integration of graphical and textual elements at the level of the source code is its main characteristic. The behavior of simulated algorithms is visualized only in the terms of their source representation and in precise functional details at the same time. The mechanism of binding covers implements the basic concepts of the parallel substitution algorithm model. It makes interactive graphic forms serve not only to display data structures but also to describe some functional elements of the source code. The separation of the parallel algorithm scheme from graphical data objects and functions written in the C language is the principal method to implement such an approach. It provides direct opportunities for optimizing equivalent transformations.

The High Level Architecture (HLA) provides the specification of a common technical architecture for use across all classes of simulations in the US Department of Defense. It provides the structural basis for simulation interoperability. The baseline definition of the HLA includes the HLA rules, the HLA interface specification and the HLA object model template (OMT). The HLA rules are a set of 10 basic rules that define the responsibilities and relationships among the components of an HLA federation. The HLA interface specification provides a specification of the functional interfaces between HLA federates and the HLA runtime infrastructure. The HLA OMT provides a common presentation format for HLA simulation and federation object models. This paper provides a description of the motivations for the development of the HLA and the process instituted to develop the architecture well as a technical description of the key elements of architecture and supporting software.

In a real-time application, a transaction may be assigned a value to reflect the profit of completing the transaction before its deadline. Satisfying both goals of maximizing the totally obtained profit and minimizing the number of missed transactions at the same time is a challenge. In this paper, we present an adaptive real-time scheduling policy named Value-based Processor Allocation (VPA-k) for scheduling value-based transactions in a multiprocessor real-time database system. Using VPA-k policy, the transactions with higher values are given higher priorities to execute first, while at most k percentage of total processors are dynamically allocated to execute the urgent transactions. Through simulation experiments, VPA-k is shown to outperform other scheduling policies substantially in both maximizing the totally obtained profit and minimizing the number of missed transactions under various system environments.

The time warp mechanism is one of the most important synchronization protocols for parallel simulation. However for most applications, the successful use of time warp requires the careful selection of time warp optimization parameters (e.g. cancellation strategies, state saving frequency, and so on). Unfortunately, the optimal setting for the simulation parameters may not hold across an application domain or even throughout the entire simulation lifetime of a single application. Consequently, several investigators have proposed the dynamic adjustment of simulation parameters over the lifetime of the simulation. The dynamic adjustment of simulation parameters requires careful design considerations. Many of these considerations are similar to the problems studied by traditional nonlinear and adaptive control theorists. These considerations include the need to implement an adjustment mechanism that converges to stable values and the need to understand how parameter adjustment affects (sampled) output values. However, the dynamic adjustment of simulation parameters occurs by using general CPU cycles and thus introduces overhead into the simulation. This overhead must be carefully controlled-too little processing and the control system may not respond correctly; too much processing and the overall simulation performance may deteriorate. We address the design of two distinct feedback control systems for dynamic parameter adjustment and describe the design considerations that were made in their construction.

In many professions where individuals must work in a team in a high stress environment to accomplish a time-critical task, individual and team performance can benefit from joint twining using distributed virtual environments (DVEs). One professional Geld that lacks but needs a high-fidelity team training environment is the field of Emergency Medicine. Currently, Emergency Department (ED) medical. personnel train by using words to create a mental picture of a situation for the physician and staff, who then cooperate to solve the problems portrayed by the word picture. The need in Emergency Medicine for realistic virtual team training is critical because ED staff typically encounter rarely occurring but life threatening situations only once in their careers and because ED teams currently have no realistic environment in which to practice their team skills. The resulting lack of experience and teamwork makes diagnosis and treatment more difficult. Virtual environment based training has the potential to redress these shortfalls. The objective of our research is to develop a state-of-the-art virtual environment for emergency medicine team training. The Virtual Emergency Room (VER) allows ED physicians and medical staff to realistically prepare for emergency medical situations by performing triage, diagnosis, and treatment on virtual patients within an environment that provides them with the tools they require and the team environment they need to realistically perform these three tasks. There are several issues that must be addressed before this vision is realized. The key issues deal with distribution of computations;the doctor and staff interface to the virtual patient and ED equipment;the accurate simulation of individual patient organs' response to injury, medication, and treatment;and an accurate modeling of the symptoms and appearance of the patient while maintaining a real-time interaction capability. In distributed hard real-time applications there is a need for temporal analysis to evaluate and optimise a design with respect to the deadlines. The key method is the scheduling analysis of such applications, which means the schedulability not only of its tasks but of its messages too. The authors present a schedulability analysis which allows one to determine the timing parameters of messages and to update those of tasks. Given an initial task set characterised by temporal attributes and network interactions, this methodology permits one to produce valid execution sequences and to evaluate the relevant timing factors. simulation results done with CAN and FDDI protocols are deduced.

To verify a priori if time constraints of a distributed real time application will be respected, one needs to develop a model suitable for the verification. The paper presents a method for modeling CAN based applications. The models are well suited to performance evaluation for the verification of time constraints. This approach is supported by the tool VACANS, integrating on the one hand a simulation method which allows it to take into account actual needs and to furnish real system performance results and on the other hand the analytic method developed by K. Tindell and A. Burns (1994) which provides the worst case message response time. This tool supports the specification of an application in terms of tasks, inter task data flow task behavior, mapping of tasks onto nodes and CAN network. Such a specification is automatically translated into a simulation model and, when the application only generates periodic messages, translated into an analytic model. The simulation is carried out using the Opnet simulation tool. The user can then verify if the time constraints are met in the actual case or in the worst case. We show the pertinence of the modeling approach and of the VACANS by applying them to an industrial case study.

With the evolution of computing technologies, both PCs and workstations have increased computing power with less cost in the recent years. This paper presents a model and design of a fully distributed virtual reality system, called Multiple User distributed simulation (MUDS) system, over a network of low-end computers. MUDS system is designed to provide a virtual environment for both a single user and multiple participants over a fully distributed environment. However, only the method and architecture of building a single user distributed virtual environment is presented in this paper. MUDS system adapts and modifies the concepts from High Level Architecture, which is designed by DoD of US to provide interoperability among distributed simulators. Compared to the other existing distributed systems, MUDS system provides a transparent interface among distributed tasks. The prototype of MUDS system has been successfully built in Institute of Computer Science and Information Engineering, Tamkang University. An experiment of using MUDS system along with the experimental result will also be fully discussed in the paper.
