Presents a platform for developing and evaluating control systems for emerging multimedia networks. The platform allows us to closely approximate the functional and dynamic behavior of network control systems. By providing support for real-time visualization and interactive emulation, it can be used to study multimedia networks in various scenarios, such as different load patterns, network sizes and management operations. The current implementation runs on a KSR-1 and an SP2 parallel processor which are connected to a graphics workstation via ATM links.

A distributedreal-time computer system consists of several processing nodes which are interconnected by communication channel. For a safety critical application the real-time computer system should maintains timely and dependable services despite component failures or environmental changes. In this paper we present a framework of an adaptable distributedreal-time computer system which can adjusts its operating strategies in response to changing application environments or variation in the fault patterns. The proposed adaptable real-time system (ARTS) is based on the integration of the scheduling strategy using imprecise technique (IT) with the fault tolerance mechanism. In our simulation study the performance of an ARTS of a controller area network (CAN) based distributed system is evaluated as to whether the timing constraints of the automotive benchmark signals can be satisfied for normal, overload, and degraded operational modes. Our investigation also shows that the quality of service maintained by the ARTS can be further improve by varying the workload.

The paper addresses the scheduling issues of realtime software agent systems. Different from the traditional client/server approach, an agent contains executable codes and is activated on a server computer after the agent is shipped through the network to the server computer. The advantage of the agent approach is to efficiently utilize the resources and the power of the server computers as well as to reduce the load on the network. A realtime agent model is proposed to handle distributedrealtimeapplications that dispatch intelligent agents to remote server locations. We investigate different scheduling algorithms on the server computer and compare their performances by simulation.

This paper presents a framework, called Vista, for designing instrumentation systems (ISs) for various applications that use distributed computing systems. We define an instrumentation system as a collection of modules and functions used for collecting data from concurrent processes executed on various nodes across the network. Based on our generic model of an IS, the Vista framework provides various abstract and base classes that help a user to quickly configure an IS for a particular application domain. Vista library is built on top of various operating system services to provide various convenience functions to collect and forward the instrumentation data. The design of this framework is hierarchical to address diverse user needs. We present the application of this framework to various practical data collection and management problems.

distributedinteractivesimulation (DIS) or SIMNET has become the primary environment for force-on-force training, but realistic high-resolution IR effects for DIS have been lacking. Toward that end, the Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate is currently developing an optimized synthetic infrared interactivesimulation (OSIRIS) which incorporates real-time atmospheric and sensor effects into a high-resolution synthetic thermal scene for ground and air applications. OSIRIS is based on first-principles models designed to enhance the realism of IR simulations, and includes an MRT-based fidelity model, and IR background-signature texture model, and a dedicated real-time sensor simulator based on FLIR92 MTF and noise modeling.

This paper presents a performance comparison of real-time system architectures. A discrete event-driven, task-based simulator is developed for evaluating the performance of parallel and distributedreal-time systems. real-time system components such as processor, network architectures, and scheduling policy are included in the simulator. simulation results show that priority-based communication and scheduling are more suitable for real-time systems than FIFO-based. The strategy of having a dedicated processor, which produces no effect on task execution by scheduling and packet/interrupt handling, is proven to enhance schedulability and predictability. This paper suggests a method for finding an appropriate real-time architecture for users having real-time requirements through the performance prediction of real-time systems.

In recent years, the performance of distributedreal-time Database Systems (DRTDBS) have been examined using different simulation models. In these models, the network issues are always being neglected. The networks are usually modeled as simple constant delay servers. However, it is found that the performance of the underlying network has a significant impact on the overall performance of the DRTDBS [1]. The results also showed that unpredictable behavior of the underlying network will give non-constant network transit time which in turn deter the overall system performance. To deal with this impact, different virtual deadline assignment schemes are proposed. The schemes assign a virtual deadline based on the current network condition to those transactions which require a comparatively better performance. Our results demonstrate that dynamically tuning the virtual deadlines of transactions depending on the condition of the network, yields a substantial improvement in the performance of that certain type of transactions without severely affecting the overall system performance.
