We present a case study of the alternatives and design trade-offs encountered when adapting an established numerical library into a form compatible with modern component-software implementation practices. Our study will help scientific software users, authors, and maintainers develop their own roadmaps for shifting to component-oriented software. The primary library studied, LSODE, and the issues involved in the adaptation are typical of many commonly used numerical libraries. We examine the adaptation of a related library, CVODE, and compare the impact on applications of the two different designs. The LSODE-derived components solve models composed with CCA components developed independently at the Argonne and Oak Ridge National Laboratories. The resulting applications run in the Ccaffeine framework implementation of the common component architecture specification. We provide CCA-style interface specifications appropriate to linear equations, ordinary differential equations (ODE), and differential algebraic equations (DAE) solvers.

In order to be truly portable, a program must be tolerant of a wide range of development and execution environments, and a parallel program is just one which must be tolerant of a very wide range. First, the term `tolerant programming' is defined. Then, a formal model called F-Nets is described in which parallel algorithms are expressed as folded partial-orderings of operations, and this is argued to provide a suitable framework for building tolerant programs. Finally, Software Cabling (SC), a very-high-level graphical programming language, demonstrates how many of the features normally expected from today's computer languages (e.g. data abstraction and data parallelism) can be obtained within the F-Net paradigm.

In the era of future embedded systems the designer is confronted with multi-processor systems both for performance and energy reasons. Exploiting (sub)task-level parallelism is becoming crucial because the instruction-level parallelism alone is insufficient. The challenge is to build compiler tools that support the exploration of the task-level parallelism in the programs. To achieve this goal, we have designed an analysis framework to evaluate the potential parallelism from sequential object-oriented programs. parallel-performance and data-access analysis are the crucial techniques for estimation of the transformation effects. We have implemented support for platform-independent data-access analysis and profiling of Java programs, which is an extension to our earlier parallel-performance analysis framework. The toolkit comprises automated design-time analysis for performance and data-access characterisation, program instrumentation, program-profiling support and post-processing analysis. We demonstrate the usability of our approach on a number of realistic Java applications.

The paper describes Rthreads (Remote threads), a software distributed shared memory system that supports sharing of global variables on clusters of computers with physically distributed memory. Other DSM systems either use virtual memory to implement coherence on networks of workstations or require programmers to adopt a special programming model. Rthreads uses primitives to read and write remote data and to synchronize remote accesses similar to the DSM systems that are based on special programming models. Unique aspects of Rthreads are: the primitives are syntactically and semantically closely related to the POSIX thread model (Pthreads). A precompiler automatically transforms Pthreads (source) programs into Rthreads (source) programs. After the transformation the programmer is still able to alter the Rthreads code for optimizing run time. Moreover Pthreads and Rthreads can be mixed within a single program. We support heterogeneous workstation clusters by implementing the Rthreads system on top of PVM, MPI and DCE. We demonstrate that programmer based optimizations may reach a significant performance increase. Our performance results show that the Rthreads system introduces few overhead compared to equivalent programs in the baseline system PVM, and a superior performance compared to the DSM systems, Adsmith and CVM.

Distributed shared memory (DSM) is a paradigm for programming distributed systems, which provides an alternative to the message passing model. DSM offers the agents of the system a shared address space through which they can communicate with each other. The main problem of a DSM implementation on top of a message passing system is performance. Performance of an implementation is closely related to the consistency the DSM system offers: strong consistency (all agents agree about how memory events happen) and is more expensive to implement than weak consistency (disagreements are allowed). There have been many DSM systems proposals, each one supporting different consistency levels. Experience has shown that no one is well suited for the whole range of problems. In some cases, strong consistent primitives are not needed, while in other cases, the weak semantics provided are useless. This is also true for different implementations of the same memory model, since performance is also affected by the data access patterns of the applications. We introduce a novel DSM model called Mume. Mume is a low level layer close to the level of the message passing interface. The Mume interface provides only the minimum requirements to be considered as a shared memory system. The interface includes three types of synchronization primitives, namely total ordering, causal ordering and mutual exclusion. This allows efficient implementations of different memory access semantics, accommodating particular data access patterns.

With the advent of multi-core processors, implementing parallel programming methods in application development is absolutely necessary in order to achieve good performance. Soon, 8-core and possibly 16-core processors will be available, even for desktop machines. To support application developers in the various tasks involved in this process, several different tools need to be at his or her disposal. This workshop will give the users an overview of the existing tools in the area of integrated development environments for clusters, various parallel debuggers, and new-style performance analysis tools, as well as an update on the state of the art of long-term research tools, which have advanced to an industrial level. The proceedingsof the 2nd parallel Tools workshop guide participants by providing a technical overview to help them decide upon which tool suits the requirements for the development task at hand. Additionally, through the hands-on sessions, the workshopwill enable the user to immediately deploy the tools.

As parallelism in microprocessors becomes mainstream, new programming languages and environments are emerging to meet the challenges of parallel programming. To support research on these languages, we are developing a low-level language infrastructure called Pillar (derived from parallel Implementation Language). Although Pillar programs are intended to be automatically generated from source programs in each parallel language, Pillar programs can also be written by expert programmers. The language is defined as a small set of extensions to C. As a result, Pillar is familiar to C programmers, but more importantly, it is practical to reuse an existing optimizing compiler like gcc [1] or Open64 [2] to implement a Pillar compiler. Pillar's concurrency features include constructs for threading, synchronization, and explicit data-parallel operations. The threading constructs focus on creating new threads only when hardware resources are idle, and otherwise executing, parallel work within existing threads, thus minimizing thread creation overhead. In addition to the usual synchronization constructs, Pillar includes transactional memory. Its sequential features include stack walking, second-class continuations, support for precise garbage collection, tail calls, and seamless integration of Pillar and legacy code. This paper describes the design and implementation of the Pillar software stack, including the language, compiler, runtime, and high-level converters (that translate high-level language programs into Pillar programs). It also reports on early experience with three high-level languages that target Pillar.

With the advent of parallel architectures in the domain of embedded systems, developing applications fully adapted to their underlying platform becomes more and more complicated. Finding and fixing bugs in such environments is even trickier. Furthermore, current complex applications cannot be developed from scratch, only based on programming language primitives. They have to follow advanced programming models and their execution will be driven by the APIs of the key underlying libraries. In this paper, we propose a new approach for source-level debuggers. Going beyond their long-established ability to support sequential programming languages, we describe the functionalities a debugger should be able to provide to debug embedded and parallel component-based applications. Then we demonstrate our solution to this problem with a debugger targeting the component framework used on an MPSoC platform. We also explain the development challenges we faced during the implementation of this GDB-based debugger and illustrate its efficiency though a case study of an image processing application. © 2012 ACM.

We present a methodology for parallel programming, along with MPI performance measurement and prediction in a class of a distributed computing environments, namely networks of workstations. Our approach is based on a two-level model where, at the top, a new parallel version of timing graph representation is used to make explicit the parallel communication and code segments of a given parallel program, while at the bottom level, analytical models are developed to represent execution behavior of parallel communications and code segments. Execution time results obtained from execution, together with problem size and number of nodes, are input to the model, which allows us to predict the performance of similar cluster computing systems with a different number of nodes. The analytical model is validated by performing experiments over a homogeneous cluster of workstations. Final results show that our approach produces accurate predictions, within 5% of actual results. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.
