This article describes and compares two parallel implementations of Branch-and-Bound skeletons. Using the C++ programming language, the user has to specify the type of the problem, the type of the solution and the specific characteristics of the Branch-and-Bound technique. This information is combined with the provided resolution skeletons to obtain a distributed and a shared parallel programs. MPI has been used to develop the Message Passing algorithm and for the Shared Memory one OpenMP has been chosen. Computational results for the 0/1 Knapsack Problem on a Sunfire 6800 SMP, a Origin 3000 and a PCs cluster are presented.

This paper presents P-RIO, a parallel programming environment that supports an object based software configuration methodology. It promotes a clear separation of the individual sequential computation components from the interconnection structure used for the interaction between these components. This makes the data and control interactions explicit, simplifying program visualization and understanding. P-RIO includes a graphical tool that helps to configure, monitor and debug parallel programs.

The NPAC kernel runtime, developed in the PCRC (parallel Compiler Runtime Consortium) project, is a runtime library with special support for the high Performance Fortran data model. It provides array descriptors for a generalized class of HPF-like distributed arrays, support for parallel access to their elements, and a rich library of collective communication and arithmetic operations for manipulating these arrays. The library has been successfully used as a component in experimental HPF translation systems. With prospects for early appearance of fully-featured, efficient HPF compilers looking questionable, we discuss a class of more easily implementable data-parallel language extensions that preserve many of the attractive features of HPF, while providing the programmer with direct access to runtime libraries such as the NPAC PCRC kernel.

In the era of future embedded systems the designer is confronted with multi-processor systems both for performance and energy reasons. Exploiting (sub)task-level parallelism is becoming crucial because the instruction-level parallelism alone is insufficient. The challenge is to build compiler tools that support the exploration of the task-level parallelism in the programs. To achieve this goal, we have designed an analysis framework to evaluate the potential parallelism from sequential object-oriented programs. parallel-performance and data-access analysis are the crucial techniques for estimation of the transformation effects. We have implemented support for platform-independent data-access analysis and profiling of Java programs, which is an extension to our earlier parallel-performance analysis framework. The toolkit comprises automated design-time analysis for performance and data-access characterisation, program instrumentation, program-profiling support and post-processing analysis. We demonstrate the usability of our approach on a number of realistic Java applications.

We present a case study of the alternatives and design trade-offs encountered when adapting an established numerical library into a form compatible with modern component-software implementation practices. Our study will help scientific software users, authors, and maintainers develop their own roadmaps for shifting to component-oriented software. The primary library studied, LSODE, and the issues involved in the adaptation are typical of many commonly used numerical libraries. We examine the adaptation of a related library, CVODE, and compare the impact on applications of the two different designs. The LSODE-derived components solve models composed with CCA components developed independently at the Argonne and Oak Ridge National Laboratories. The resulting applications run in the Ccaffeine framework implementation of the Commmon Component Architecture specification. We provide CCA-style interface specifications appropriate to linear equations, ordinary differential equations (ODE), and differential algebraic equations (DAE) solvers.

The pipeline is a simple and intuitive structure to speed up many problems. Novice parallel programmers are usually taught this structure early on. However, expert parallel programmers typically eschew using the pipeline in coarse-grained applications because it has three serious problems that make it difficult to implement efficiently. First, processors are idle when the pipeline is not full. Second, load balancing is crucial to obtaining good speedup. Third, it is difficult to incrementally incorporate more processors into an existing pipeline. Instead, experts recast the problem as a master/slave structure which does not suffer from these problems. This paper details a transformation that allows programs written in a pipeline style to execute using the master/slave structure. parallel programmers can benefit from both the intuitive simplicity of the pipeline and the efficient execution of a master/slave structure. This is demonstrated by performance results from two applications.

In this paper we focus on generating efficient parallel codes for solving scientific problems within large-scale performance-critical applications. More specifically, we present techniques for high-level symbolic optimization for automatic generation of efficient codes that numerically solve sets of computationally expensive right-hand sides (RHSs) of systems of partial differential equations (PDEs). These type of PDE problems can be found in application areas like numerical weather prediction, ocean circulation modeling, and climate modeling. To solve the PDEs describing the physical problem, high-performance software environments and computer platforms are required. The CTADEL application driver is a software environment for generating optimized codes for serial, vector, or parallel architectures from a high-level PDE problem description of a weather forecast model. The advantage of the high-level problem description is that all of the high-level information can be exploited for parallelization, restructuring, and optimization from the highest descriptive level to the low-level generated code.

The Message Passing Interface (MPI) is designed as an architecture independent interface for parallel programming in the shared-nothing, message passing paradigm. We briefly summarize basic requirements to a high-quality implementation of MPI for efficient programming of SMP clusters and related architectures, and discuss possible, mild extensions of the topology functionality of MPI, which, while retaining a high degree of architecture independence, can make MPI more useful and efficient for message-passing programming of SMP clusters. We show that the discussed extensions can all be implemented on top of MPI with very little environmental support. © 2003 IEEE.

The takeup of parallel computing has been hampered by the lack of portable software. The BSP model allows the design of portable code for regular computations. This paper describes the use of the WPRAM model to support more irregular problems. A shared queue data type is described, which provides predictable and scalable performance characteristics. The queue can be used to structure the sharing of data in a parallel system, resulting in code which is portable and amenable to performance analysis.

This paper describes Rthreads (Remote threads), a software distributed shared memory system that supports sharing of global variables on clusters of computers with physically distributed memory. Other DSM systems either use virtual memory to implement coherence on networks of workstations or require programmers to adopt a special programming model. Rthreads uses primitives to read and write remote data and to synchronize remote accesses similar to the DSM systems that are based on special programming models. Unique aspects of Rthreads are: The primitives are syntactically and semantically closely related to the POSIX thread model (Pthreads). A precompiler automatically transforms Pthreads (source) programs into Rthreads (source) programs. After the transformation the programmer is still able to alter the Rthreads code for optimizing run-time. Moreover, Pthreads and Rthreads can be mixed within a single program. We support heterogeneous workstation clusters by implementing the Rthreads system on top of PVM, MPI and DCE. We demonstrate that programmer based optimizations may reach a significant performance increase. Our performance results show that the Rthreads system introduces few overhead compared to equivalent programs in the baseline system PVM, and a superior performance compared to the DSM systems Adsmith and CVM.
