Implementing realistic scientific applications on parallel platforms requires a high level, problem adequate and flexible programming environment. The hybrid system PROMOTER pursues a two level approach allowing easy and flexible programming at both language and library levels. The core concept of PROMOTER's language model is its highly abstract and unified concept of data and communication structures. The paper briefly addresses the programming model, but focuses on implementation aspects of the compiler and runtime system. Finally, performance results are given, evaluating the efficiency of the PROMOTER system.

Cellular automata are used for designing high performance applications in many areas. The paper describes CARPET, a high level programming language based on the cellular automata model. CARPET is a programming language designed to support the development of parallel high performance software. It exploits the computing power of a highly parallel computer releasing a user from using explicit parallel constructs. A CARPET implementation has been used for programming cellular algorithms in the CAMEL parallel environment. With CARPET, a user might write programs to describe the actions of thousands of simple active agents interacting locally, then the CAMEL environment allows a user to observe the global complex evolution that arises from their parallel execution and their local interactions.

The paper presents the Abstract Configuration Language (ACL) implemented within the parallel Objects object oriented parallel programming environment. ACL defines a set of directives that allow users to specify the allocation needs of his/her application components without being aware of the architectural details. ACL directives drive the allocation decisions of the run time support, by adapting its general purpose behaviour to follow an applications particular allocation needs. The effectiveness of the ACL approach in increasing the performances of parallel applications is confirmed by a testbed application.

The paper explores the integration of load balancing features in the data parallel language, HPF, targeting semi regular applications. We show that the HPF virtual processors are good candidates to be the unit of migration. Then, we compare 3 possible implementations and show that threads provide a good trade-off between efficiency and ease of implementation. We finally describe a preliminary implementation. The experimental results, obtained with the Gaussian elimination with partial pivoting are promising.

programming distributed memory multiprocessors requires program parallelization as well as program optimization with respect to data locality. SVM-Fortran is a programming language for shared virtual memory architectures with special language features for specifying the distribution of parallel tasks onto the processors. It is realized on top of a shared virtual memory implementation on Intel Paragon. A programming environment provides performance analysis tools helping the user in the optimization of data locality. The paper outlines the environment, describes the basic concepts of the performance analysis support, and presents a design for the automation of performance analysis.

This paper presents P-RIO, a parallel programming environment that supports an object based software configuration methodology. It promotes a clear separation of the individual sequential computation components from the interconnection structure used for the interaction between these components. This makes the data and control interactions explicit, simplifying program visualization and understanding. P-RIO includes a graphical tool that helps to configure, monitor and debug parallel programs.

Processor layout and data distribution are important to performance-oriented parallel computation, yet high-level language support that helps programmers address these issues is often inadequate. This paper presents a trio of abstract high-level language constructs - grids, distributions, and regions - that let programmers manipulate processor layout and data distribution. Grids abstract processor sets, regions abstract index sets, and distributions abstract mappings from index sets to processor sets; each of these is a first-class concept, supporting dynamic data reallocation and redistribution as well as dynamic manipulation of the processor set. This paper illustrates uses of these constructs in the solutions to several motivating parallel programming problems.

This paper presents a new language concept for the support of application integrated load distribution. Load distribution is realized by assigning tasks to cooperating agents and also by migrating agents from overloaded to under-loaded processes. Flexible and portable implementation of load distribution mechanisms is achieved by user implemented move and restart tasks. The paper describes the new programming model and presents language constructs realizing this model. A program example shows the usage of the new language constructs and demonstrates easy implementation of load distribution using the new concept.

The paper describes the functionality of ViC*, a compiler for a variant of the data parallel language C* with support for out-of-core data. The compiler translates C* programs with shapes declared out of core, which describe parallel data stored on disk. The compiler output is a SPMD style program in standard C with I/O and library calls added to efficiently access out-of-core parallel data. The ViC* compiler also applies several program transformations to improve out-of-core data access.

Several parallel programming languages, libraries and environments have been developed to ease the task of writing programs for multiprocessors. Proponents of each approach often point out various language features that are designed to provide the programmer with a simple programming interface. However, virtually no data exists that quantitatively evaluates the relative ease of use of different parallel programming languages. The paper borrows techniques from the software engineering field to quantify the complexity of three predominate programming models: shared memory, message passing and high-Performance Fortran. It is concluded that traditional software complexity metrics are effective indicators of the relative complexity of parallel programming languages. The impact of complexity on run-time performance is also discussed in the context of message passing versus HPF on an IBM SP2.
