Eden is a concurrent declarative language that aims at both the programming of reactive systems and parallel algorithms on distributed memory systems. In this paper, we explain the computation and coordination model of Eden. We show how lazy evaluation in the computation language is fruitfully combined with the coordination language that is specifically designed for multicomputers and that aims at maximum parallelism.

This paper introduces a new high-level parallel programming construct called multiLoop that is designed to extend existing imperative languages such as C and Java. A multiLoop statement translates to SPMD specification of a named group of synchronous-iterative processes. For efficient iterative communication, multiLoop provides a new publish/subscribe model of shared variable access. Under this model the sequential consistency of shared memory is maintained by a new, simple and efficient adaptation of virtual time paradigm. Virtual time is a localised message tagging and queuing procedure that provides a highly efficient alternative to barrier calls. ML-C, a prototype implementation based on C has been developed. We describe the programming model, discuss its implementation and present some empirical data showing good performance obtained for an example of the target class of applications.

Dynamic parallel Schedules (DPS) is a high-level framework for developing parallel applications on distributed memory computers (e.g. clusters of PCs). Its model relies on compositional customizable split-compute-merge graphs of operations (directed acyclic flow graphs). The graphs and the mapping of operations to processing nodes are specified dynamically at runtime. DPS applications are pipelined and multithreaded by construction, ensuring a maximal overlap of computations and communications. DPS applications can call parallel services exposed by other DPS applications, enabling the creation of reusable parallel components. The DPS framework relies on a C++ class library. Thanks to its dynamic nature, DPS offers new perspectives for the creation and deployment of parallel applications running on server clusters.

The takeup of parallel computing has been hampered by the lack of portable software. The BSP model allows the design of portable code for regular computations. This paper describes the use of the WPRAM model to support more irregular problems. A shared queue data type is described which provides predictable and scalable performance characteristics. The queue can be used to structure the sharing of data in a parallel system, resulting in code which is portable and amenable to performance analysis.

The strong focus of recent high end computing efforts on performance has resulted in a low-level parallel programming paradigm characterized by explicit control over message-passing in the framework of a fragmented programming model. In such a model, object code performance is achieved at the expense of productivity, conciseness, and clarity. This paper describes the design of Chapel, the cascade high productivity language, which is being developed in the DARPA-funded HPCS project Cascade led by Cray Inc. Chapel pushes the state-of-the-art in languages for HEC system programming by focusing on productivity, in particular by combining the goal of highest possible object code performance with that of programmability offered by a high-level user interface. The design of Chapel is guided by four key areas of language technology: multithreading, locality-awareness, object-orientation, and generic programming. The Cascade architecture, which is being developed in parallel with the language, provides key architectural support for its efficient implementation.

Distributed shared objects are a well known approach to achieve independence of the memory model for parallel programming. The illusion of shared (global) objects is a convenient abstraction which leads to ease of programming on both kinds of parallel architectures, shared memory and distributed memory machines. We present several different implementation variants for distributed shared objects on distributed platforms. We have considered these variants while implementing a high level parallel programming model known as coordinators (J. Knopp, 1996). These are global objects coordinating accesses to the encapsulated data according to statically defined access patterns. Coordinators have been implemented on both shared memory multiprocessors and networks of workstations (NOWs). We describe their implementation as distributed shared objects and give basic performance results on a NOW.

parallel Skeletons have been proposed as a possible programming model for parallel architectures. One of the problems with this approach is the choice of the skeleton which is best suited to the characteristics of the algorithm/program to be developed/parallelized, and of the target architecture, in terms of performance of the parallel implementation. Another problem arising with parallelization of legacy codes is the attempt to minimize the effort needed for program comprehension, and thus to achieve the minimum restructuring of the sequential code when producing the parallel version. In this paper we propose automated Program Comprehension at the algorithmic level as a driving feature in the task of selection of the proper parallel Skeleton, best suited to the characteristics of the algorithm/program and of the target architecture. Algorithmic concept recognition can automate or support the generation of parallel code through instantiation of the selected parallel Skeleton(s) with template based transformations of recognized code segments.

The NPAC kernel runtime, developed in the PCRC (parallel Compiler Runtime Consortium) project, is a runtime library with special support for the high Performance Fortran data model. It provides array descriptors for a generalized class of HPF like distributed arrays, support for parallel access to their elements, and a rich library of collective communication and arithmetic operations for manipulating these arrays. The library has been successfully used as a component in experimental HPF translation systems. With prospects for early appearance of fully featured, efficient HPF compilers looking questionable, we discuss a class of more easily implementable data parallel language extensions that preserve many of the attractive features of HPF, while providing the programmer with direct access to runtime libraries such as the NPAC PCRC kernel.

parallel/distributed application development is a very difficult task for non-expert programmers, and therefore support tools are needed for all phases of this kind of application development cycle. This means that developing applications using predefined programming structures (frameworks) should be easier than doing it from scratch. We propose to take advantage of the knowledge about the structure of the application in order to develop a dynamic and automatic tuning tool. In this sense, we have designed POETRIES, which is a dynamic performance tuning tool based on the idea that a performance model could be associated to the high-level structure of the application. This way, the tool could efficiently make better tuning decisions. Specifically, we focus this work on the definition of the performance model associated to applications developed with the master-worker framework.

This article describes and compares two parallel implementations of Branch-and-Bound skeletons. Using the C++ programming language, the user has to specify the type of the problem, the type of the solution and the specific characteristics of the branch-and-bound technique. This information is combined with the provided resolution skeletons to obtain a distributed and a shared parallel programs. MPI has been used to develop the message passing algorithm and for the shared memory one OpenMP has been chosen. Computational results for the 0/1 Knapsack Problem on a Sunfire 6800 SMP, a Origin 3000 and a PCs cluster are presented.
