Recently, a growing number of researchers focus their work on a fledgling field related to the identification, recording, interpreting, processing and simulation of emotion and affective states. Affective computing, along with the wide range of related application areas, is expanded increasingly due to the emerging demand for natural, intelligent, adaptive and personalized multimodal interaction context. This paper focuses on the gesture and bodily expressivity analysis, investigating and reporting the entire spectrum of related aspects such as issues involved in affectively enhanced corpora (stimuli and input streams), respective expressivity formalization approaches as well as machine learning and pattern recognition aspects (feature extraction, multimodal fusion and classification). Finally, the synthesis counterpart of affectively enhanced behavior is examined and future directions of the research area are identified.

With ever-improving information technologies and high performance computational power, recent techniques in granular computing, soft computing and cognitive science have allowed an increasing understanding of normal and abnormal brain functions, especially in the research of human's pattern recognition by means of computational intelligence. It is well understood that normal brains have high intelligence to recognize different geometrical patterns, but a systematic framework of biological neural network has not yet be established. In this paper, we propose the genetic granular cognitive fuzzy neural networks (GGCFNN) in order to efficiently testify artificial neural networks' learning capability on human's pattern recognition in term of symmetric and similar geometry patterns. In contrast to other information systems, the GGCFNN is a highly hybrid intelligent system integrating the techniques of genetic algorithms, granular computing, and fuzzy neural networks with cognitive science for pattern recognition. Our ability to simulate biological neural networks makes it possible a more comprehensive quantitative analysis on the pattern recognition of human brains, and our preliminary experiment results would shed lights on the future research of cognitive science and brain informatics.

In this paper, we present a novel methodology on document image analysis (DIA) which harnesses the mechanism of preattentive visual guidance in human vision. Summarizing the psychophysical discoveries on preattentive vision, we propose two types of computational simulations of this biological process: the visual similarity clustering and visual saliency detection, based on which we implement a novel biological plausible way to guide the interpretation of document images. Experimental results prove the efficiency of these two computational processes, whose outputs can be further utilized by other task-oriented DIA applications.

A directional multiresolution approach was proposed for texture analysis and classification based on a modified contourlet transform named the stationary wavelet-based contourlet transform (SWBCT). In the phase for extracting features after the decomposition, energy measures, Hu moments and co-occurrence matrices were calculated respectively. The progressive texture classification algorithm had better performance compared with several other methods using wavelet, stationary wavelet, brushlet, contourlet and Gabor filters. Moreover, in the case that there are only small scale samples for training, our method can also obtain a satisfactory result.
