We propose a novel non-linear registration strategy which seeks an optimal deformation that maps corresponding boundaries of similar orientation. Our approach relies on a local similarity metric based on gradient orientation alignment and distance to the nearest inferred boundary and is evaluated on a reduced set of locations corresponding to inferred boundaries. The deformation model is characterized as the integration of a time-constant velocity field and optimization is performed in coarse to fine multi-level strategy with a gradient ascent technique. Our approach is computational efficient since it relies on a sparse selection of voxels corresponding to detected boundaries, yielding robust and accurate results with reduced processing times. We demonstrate quantitative results in the context of the non-linear registration of inter-patient magnetic resonance brain volumes obtained from a public dataset (CUMC12). Our proposed approach achieves a similar level of accuracy as other state-of-the-art methods but with processing times as short as 1.5 minutes. We also demonstrate preliminary qualitative results in the time-sensitive registration contexts of registering MR brain volumes to intra-operative ultrasound for improved guidance in neurosurgery.

We aim at developing new dementia-related features based on longitudinalMRI in order to differentiate various stages of Alzheimer's disease. Current methods for dementia classification rely heavily on the quality of MRI preprocessing, especially on prior registration. We propose to avoid a possibly unsuccessful and always time-consuming non-rigid registration by employing local invariant features which are independent of image scale and orientation, and can be tracked over time in longitudinal studies. We detect and track such keypoints based on scale-space theory in an automatized image processing workflow, and test it on a standardized MRI collection made available by the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). Our approach is very efficient for processing very large datasets collected from different sites and technical devices, and first results show that characteristic scale and movement of keypoints and their tracks differ significantly between controls and diseased subjects.

A texture descriptor based on a set of indices of degrees of local approximating polynomials is proposed in this paper. An image is split into non-overlapping patches, reshaped into one-dimensional source vectors and convolved with the polynomial approximation kernels of various degrees p. As a result, a set of approximations is obtained. For each element of the source vector, these approximations are ranked according to the difference between the original and approximated values. A set of indices of polynomial degrees form a local feature. This procedure is repeated for each pixel from the local area. Finally, a proposed texture descriptor is obtained from the frequency histogram of all obtained local features. A nearest neighbor classifier utilizing correlation distance metric is used to evaluate a performance of the introduced descriptor. An accuracy of texture classification is evaluated on the Brodatz dataset, with respect to different methods of texture analysis and classification. The results of this comparison show that the proposed method is competitive with the recent statistical approaches such as local binary patterns (LBP), local ternary patterns, completed LBP, Weber's local descriptor, and VZ algorithms (VZ-MR8 and VZ-Joint).

This paper proposes a denoising algorithm which performs non-local means bilateral filtering. As existing literature suggests, non-local means (NLM) is one of the widely used denoising techniques, but has a critical drawback of smoothing of edges. In order to improve this, we perform fast and efficient NLM using Approximate Nearest Neighbour Fields and improve the edge content in denoising by formulating a joint-bilateral filter. Using the proposed joint bilateral, we are able to denoise smooth regions using the NLM approach and efficient edge reconstruction is obtained from the bilateral filter. Furthermore, to avoid tedious parameter selection, we carry out a noise estimation before performing joint bilateral filtering. The proposed approach is observed to perform well on high noise images.

The camera movement estimation targets the finding of a projective transformation which links consecutive images. As far as small motion is considered, an approximation of the vector displacement field is calculated from local optical flow following Longuet-Higgins-Prazdny (LHP) model; the camera large movements are usually estimated from pyramidal implementation of optical flow and LHP model. An alternative to this latter-addressed in this paper - aims to model globally the large optical flow vector field in order to obtain a non approximated homographic model which links two images. The projective parameters are obtained using Bellman's 1D dynamic programming (1D DP) extended to 2D (2D DP) and its pyramidal implementation. The experimental results confirm the better correlation between images matched through the proposed non-approximated homography when compared to other existing local (Lucas-Kanade for example) or semi-global (Horn-Schunck for example) approaches.

Hierarchical clustering is a widely used tool for structuring and visualizing complex data using similarity. Traditionally, hierarchical clustering is based on local heuristics that do not explicitly provide assessment of the statistical saliency of the extracted hierarchy. We propose a non-parametric generative model for hierarchical clustering of similarity based on multifurcating Gibbs fragmentation trees. This allows us to infer and display the posterior distribution of hierarchical structures that comply with the data. We demonstrate the utility of our method on synthetic data and data of functional brain connectivity.

We propose a script independent Bayesian framework for keyword spotting in multilingual handwritten documents. The approach relies on local character level score and global word level hypothesis scores and learns a Bayesian logistic regression classifier to distinguish between keywords and non-keywords. In a Bayesian formulation of logistic regression, the integral over weights becomes intractable. Variational approximation is used for inference. In order to learn a robust classifier with minimal number of samples, we apply Bayesian active learning framework to request labels for those word images which provide maximum information gain in improving the classifier. We evaluate our system on multilingual datasets, publicly available IAM dataset for English, AMA for Arabic and LAW dataset for Devanagiri. The system is also evaluated on a synthetic multilingual dataset prepared by combining samples from IAM, AMA and LAW datasets. The results are comparable with the state of art multilingual keyword spotting framework.

We propose that the orthogonal curvilinear coordinate systems revealed locally by the eigenvector flow derived from the Hessian of data density can be used as a mean to obtain local charts around modes. These charts can be stitched to form an atlas to define a global map of the data space, providing a base for data classification or clustering. A given point is projected to the ridges of the probability density by solving a differential equation which forces the gradient to be in the direction of the eigenvector corresponding to the largest eigenvalue of the Hessian. A curvilinear coordinate is then determined as the curve length along each ridge from the projection point to the mode. Since solving such differential equations numerically could be computationally prohibitive for large number of samples to be projected, we also present a diffeomorphic coordinate transformation model to approximate these Cartesian-to-curvilinear coordinate mappings. The model is primarily conceived as an interpolator, and the landmark training data are transformed exactly. The interpolation model is regularized in the Tikhonov sense using a user-specified differential operator. The proposed interpolation methodology is adapted from landmark-matching-based deformable image registration literature.

The strategy of extracting discriminant features from a face image is immensely important to accurate face recognition. This paper proposes a feature extraction algorithm based on wavelets and local binary patterns (LBPs). The proposed method decomposes a face image into multiple sub-bands of frequencies using wavelet transform. Each sub-band in the wavelet domain is divided into non-overlapping sub-regions. Then LBP histograms based on the traditional 8-neighbour sampling points are extracted from the approximation sub-band, whilst 4-neighbour sampling points are used to extract LBPHs from detail sub-bands. Finally, all LBPHs are concatenated into a single feature histogram to effectively represent the face image. Euclidean distance is used to measure the similarity of different feature histograms and the final recognition is performed by the nearest-neighbour classifier. The above strategy was tested on two publicly available face databases (Yale and ORL) using different scenarios and different combination of sub-bands. Results show that the proposed method outperforms the traditional LBP based features.

non-local means (NLM) is a popular denoising scheme. Conceptually simple, the algorithm is computationally intensive for large images. We propose to speed up NLM by using random sampling. Our algorithm picks, uniformly at random, a small number of columns of the weight matrix, and uses these "representatives" to compute an approximate result. It also incorporates an extra column-normalization of the sampled columns, a form of symmetrization that often boosts the denoising performance on real images. Using statistical large deviation theory, we analyze the proposed algorithm and provide guarantees on its performance. We show that the probability of having a large approximation error decays exponentially as the image size increases. Thus, for large images, the random estimates generated by the algorithm are tightly concentrated around their limit values, even if the sampling ratio is small. Numerical results confirm our theoretical analysis: the proposed algorithm reduces the run time of NLM, and thanks to the symmetrization step, actually provides some improvement in peak signal-to-noise ratios.
