As systems scale toward exascale, many resources will become increasingly constrained. While some of these resources have historically been explicitly allocated, many-such as network bandwidth, I/O bandwidth, or power-have not. As systems continue to evolve, we expect many such resources to become explicitly managed. This change will pose critical challenges to resource management and job scheduling. In this paper, we explore the potentiality of relaxing network allocation constraints for Blue Gene systems. Our objective is to improve the batch scheduling performance, where the partition-based interconnect architecture provides a unique opportunity to explicitly allocate network resources to jobs. This paper makes three major contributions. The first is substantial benchmarking of parallel applications, focusing on assessing application sensitivity to communication bandwidth at large scale. The second is two new scheduling schemes using relaxed network allocation and targeted at balancing individual job performance with overall system performance. The third is a comparative study of our scheduling schemes versus the existing one under different workloads, using job traces collected from the 48-rack Mira, an IBM Blue Gene/Q system at Argonne National Laboratory.

The ever growing number of computation-intensive applications calls for the interoperation of distributed infrastructures such as Clouds, Grids and private clusters. The European SHIWA and ER-flow projects have been initiated to enable the combination of heterogeneous scientific workflows, and to execute them in a large-scale system consisting of multiple distributed Computing Infrastructures including Grids and Clouds. One of the resource management challenges of these projects called parameter study job scheduling. A parameter study job of a workflow has a large number of input files to be consumed by independent job instances. In this paper we propose a meta-brokering solution for these workflows to be applied in science gateways. To cope with the high uncertainty and unpredictable load of the utilized infrastructures, we rely on resource priority services. These tools are capable of determining and dynamically updating priorities of the available infrastructures to be selected for job instances.

One of the benefits of multiprogramming in conventional systems is to allow effective use of resources. For example, when one application blocks for I/O, another can use the available CPU time, improving throughput and performance. In a multithreaded environment, contention for resources can lead to substantial interference between applications: an application with dependencies can suffer if a thread holding a critical dependency is not scheduled in time. In the HPC community, this problem is often addressed by reservation-based schedulers such as Gang scheduling. However, such schedulers cannot reap the benefits of resource multiplexing leading to underutilization of the resources and lower overall throughput of the system. In this paper, we explore the tradeoff between contention and reservation in multithreaded application scheduling on multicore systems. We show that neither approach is optimal under all conditions. We propose Controlled Contention (CC) - a scheduling algorithm that allows controlled contention for resources, allowing the benefits of contention while supporting limited reservation to reduce interference. CC provides around 25% improvement in relative speedup over the Completely Fair Scheduler (CFS). We also show that CC can significantly benefit from application-level interference management while providing fairness that is not possible to achieve with application-level adaptation alone. The combined approach (CC with application-level adaptation) provides an average of 21% improvement in throughput, 35% improvement in relative speedup and 36% reduction in energy for the application mixes we consider.

Cloud gaming is becoming a popular IT business among cloud services. In order to host a variety of network services, modern clouds provide great computing power by equipping with multi-core CPUs and parallel-core GPUs. In our previous work, we propose VGASA [1], a virtualized GPU resource adaptive scheduling policy in cloud gaming, solving the poor default mechanisms of GPU resource sharing. However, with the number of game player for cloud gaming rising, the user experience is inevitably limited by the network bandwidth and communication quality, due to the poor default mechanism of network resources management. To address this network limitation, we propose BAM, which combines distributed architecture and virtualized GPU resource adaptive policy in cloud gaming based on our prior work. The key module of BAM maintains a real-time monitoring of the virtual machine (VM) running status to manage the allocation of network resources, guaranteeing the better running of VMs.

Current production resource management and scheduling systems often use some mechanism to guarantee fair sharing of computational resources among different users of the system. For example, the user who so far consumed small amount of CPU time gets higher priority and vice versa. However, different users may have highly heterogeneous demands concerning system resources, including CPUs, RAM, HDD storage capacity or, e.g., GPU cores. Therefore, it may not be fair to prioritize them only with respect to the consumed CPU time. Still, applied mechanisms often do not reflect other consumed resources or they use rather simplified and "ad hoc" solutions to approach these issues. We show that such solutions may be (highly) unfair and unsuitable for heterogeneous systems. We provide a survey of existing works that try to deal with this situation, analyzing and evaluating their characteristics. Next, we present new enhanced approach that supports multi-resource aware user prioritization mechanism. Importantly, this approach is capable of dealing with the heterogeneity of both jobs and resources. A working implementation of this new prioritization scheme is currently applied in the Czech National Grid Infrastructure MetaCentrum.

High-performance computing (HPC) is focused on providing large-scale compute capacity to scientific applications. HPC schedulers tend to be optimized for large parallel batch jobs and, as such, often overlook the requirements of other scientific applications. In this work, we propose a cloud-inspired HPC scheduling model that aims to capture application performance and requirement models (Application Aware - A2) and dynamically resize malleable application resource allocations to be able to support applications with critical performance or deadline requirements. (Low Latency allocation - L2). The proposed model incorporates measures to improve data-intensive applications performance on HPC systems and is derived from a set of cloud scheduling techniques that are identified as applicable in HPC environments. The model places special focus on dynamically malleable applications;data-intensive applications that support dynamic resource allocation without incurring severe performance penalties;which are proposed for fine-grained back- filling and dynamic resource allocation control without job preemption. © 2015 ACM.

The successful exploitation of multicore processor architectures is a key element of the LHC distributed computing system in the coming era of the LHC Run 2. High-pileup complex-collision events represent a challenge for the traditional sequential programming in terms of memory and processing time budget. The CMS data production and processing framework is introducing the parallel execution of the reconstruction and simulation algorithms to overcome these limitations. CMS plans to execute multicore jobs while still supporting single core processing for other tasks difficult to parallelize, such as user analysis. The CMS strategy for job management thus aims at integrating single and multicore job scheduling across the Grid. This is accomplished by employing multicore pilots with internal dynamic partitioning of the allocated resources, capable of running payloads of various core counts simultaneously. An extensive test programme has been conducted to enable multicore scheduling with the various local batch systems available at CMS sites, with the focus on the Tier-0 and Tier-ls, responsible during 2015 of the prompt data reconstruction. Scale tests have been run to analyse the performance of this scheduling strategy and ensure an efficient use of the distributed resources. This paper presents the evolution of the CMS job management and resource provisioning systems in order to support this hybrid scheduling model, as well as its deployment and performance tests, which will enable CMS to transition to a multicore production model for the second LHC run.
