As the energy consumption of embedded multiprocessor systems becomes increasingly prominent, the real-time energy-efficient scheduling in multiprocessor systems becomes an urgent problem to reduce the system energy consumption while meeting real-time constraints. For a multiprocessor with independent DVFS and DPM at each processor, this paper proposes an energy-efficient real-time scheduling algorithm named LRE-DVFS-EACH, based on LRE-TL which is an optimal real-time scheduling algorithm for sporadic tasks. LRE-DVFS-EACH utilizes the concept of TL plane and the idea of fluid scheduling to dynamically scale the voltage and frequency of processors at the initial time of each TL plane as well as the release time of a sporadic task in each TL plane. Consequently, LRE-DVFS-EACH can obtain a reasonable tradeoff between the real-time constraints and the energy saving. LRE-DVFS-EACH is also adaptive to the change of workload caused by the dynamic release of sporadic tasks, which can obtain more energy savings. The experimental results show that compared with existing algorithms, LRE-DVFS-EACH can not only guarantee the optimal feasibility of sporadic tasks, but also achieve more energy savings in all cases, especially in the case of high workloads. © 2011 IEEE.

Currently, most workflow management systems (WfMS) in Grid environments provide push-oriented task distribution strategies, where tasks are directly bound to suitable resources. In those scenarios the dedicated resources execute the submitted tasks according to the request of a WfMS or sometimes by support of a Meta-scheduling service. This approach has specific problems, especially because of various conditions and constrains that have to be taken into account like local policies or the sites' autonomy. To deal with such issues, this paper takes a closer look to the task distribution strategies. The established Grid WfMSs essentially support control-flow and data perspectives. However, they neglect the resource perspective. This paper exposes the advantages to deal with this perspective and demonstrates its feasability by a prototype implementation that integrates the missing resource patterns into UNICORE.

Grids can be considered as dominant platforms for large-scale parallel/distributed computing in science and engineering. Clouds allow users to acquire and release resources on-demand. Next generation computing environments will benefit from the combination of Grid and Cloud paradigms providing frameworks that integrate traditional Grid services with on-demand Cloud services. Nowadays, workflows are the preferred means for the combination of services into added value service chains representing functional business processes or complex scientific experiments. A promising way to manage effectively services composition in a dynamic and heterogenous environment is to make the workflow management framework able to self-adapt at runtime to changes in its environment and provide an uniform resource access mechanism over Grid and Cloud infrastructures. Autonomic workflow management systems can support the runtime modification of workflows with the aim of improving their performance and recover from faults determining and provisioning the appropriate mix of Grid/Cloud services with requested QoS. This paper describes Sunflower an innovative P2P agent-based framework for configuring, enacting, managing and adapting workflows on hybrid Grid-Cloud infrastructures. To orchestrate Grid and Cloud services, Sunflower uses a bio-inspired autonomic choreography model and integrates the scheduling algorithm with a provisioning component that can dynamically launch virtual machines in a Cloud infrastructure to provide on-demand services in peak-load situations. © 2011 IFIP.

resource scheduling is crucial to data centers. However, most existing resource scheduling algorithms focus only on one-dimensional resource models, ignoring the fact that multiple resources (e.g. CPU, memory, storage, and network bandwidth) are consumed simultaneously. Competition for multiple resources has become increasingly severe as cloud computing allows uncoordinated and heterogeneous users to share a data center. In this paper, we map such a resource scheduling problem to a bounded multi-dimensional scheduling problem (B-MDKP), taking into account the requirement dependency among multi-dimensional resources. Due to the NP hardness of B-MDKP, we present Multi-dimensional resource Integrated scheduling (MRIS), a novel heuristic algorithm to obtain the approximate optimal solution. To demonstrate the advantage of our scheduling scheme, we have implemented MRIS in Haizea, a resource management architecture and made a detailed comparison with existing studies. Our evaluation results show that MRIS achieves high efficiency and high performance for a diverse set of workloads.

This paper presents a proposal for interference avoidance in Long Term Evolution (LTE) femtocells by using a simple distributed frequency-domain resource allocation and power optimization. A downlink frequency-domain scheduling approach is proposed to roughly separate the macro- and femtocell resource allocation with a small signaling load increase from macrocell to femtocells. The scheduling approach is also modified to fit single-carrier operation in LTE uplink. Extensive simulations are carried out with LTE system compliance and results show the proposed scheduler effectively improves the system throughput up to a moderate resource utilization.

The inclusion of reconfigurable processors in distributed grid systems promises to offer increased performance without compromising flexibility. Consequently, these large-scale distributed grid systems (such as TeraGrid) are utilizing reconfigurable computing resources next to general-purpose processors (GPPs) in their computing nodes. The near-optimal utilization of resources in such distributed systems considerably depends on the resource management and the application task scheduling. Many state-of-the-art simulators for application scheduling simulation in distributed computing systems have been proposed. However, there is no dedicated simulation framework to study the behavior of reconfigurable nodes in grids. The incorporation of reconfigurable nodes in these systems requires to take into account reconfigurable hardware characteristics, such as, area utilization, performance increase, reconfiguration time, and time to transfer configuration bit streams, execution code, and data. Many of these characteristics are not taken into account by traditional simulators. In this paper, we present a simulation framework for reconfigurable processors in large-scale distributed systems. It is capable of modeling reconfigurable nodes, processor configurations, and tasks in a distributed system. Furthermore, as part of the verification of the framework, we implemented a dynamic task scheduling algorithm with support for the scheduling of tasks on reconfigurable nodes. A number of experiments with various simulation parameters were conducted. The results show an expected trend. We also present a thorough discussion of the results.

The license management is one of the main concerns when Independent Software Vendors (ISV) try to distribute their software in computing platforms such as Clouds. They want to be sure that customers use their software according to their license terms. The work presented in this paper tries to solve part of this problem extending a semantic resource allocation approach for supporting the scheduling of job taking into account software licenses. This approach defines the licenses as another type of computational resource which is available in the system and must be allocated to the different jobs requested by the users. License terms are modeled as resource properties, which describe the license constraints. A resource ontology has been extended in order to model the relations between customers, providers, jobs, resources and licenses in detail and make them machine processable. The license scheduling has been introduced in a semantic resource allocation process by providing a set of rules, which evaluate the semantic license terms during the job scheduling.

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a negotiation-based resource management system called Mercury. As the number of resources in Grids is increasing rapidly, selecting appropriate resources to execute tasks has become a crucial issue. The proposed system implements the Extended Contract Net Protocol (ECNP), which improves the standard bidding model by integrating a matchmaking technique. Our model addresses the issues of matchmaker overload and the lack of up-to-date resource state information in the original matchmaking model. To ensure that the system is user-friendly, we provide a web interface. By using the provided job templates, users can describe their jobs more easily, and service providers can deploy their services in the system in a simple manner. Furthermore, to improve the interoperability of the system, we adopt open standards, such as the WS-Agreement and JSDL protocols. Our experimental results demonstrate the scalability and efficiency of the system.
