Modern HPC systems are constructed by placing more and more cores in a single machine. To utilize this kind of machines efficiently, many parallel processes have to be used. The performance analysis of massively parallel program runs becomes more and more complicated as the number of events that are generated while the program is traced grows linearly with the number of processes. In order to utilize large HPC systems efficiently, parallel applications have to execute I/O requests in parallel. Analyzing these I/O requests and optimizing this part of a parallel program requires a deep knowledge of all issued requests and the dependencies between these requests. Traditional tracing facilities record all necessary information, including all synchronization events. We present a novel approach to reduce the amount of information needed for an I/O analysis in program traces significantly. This reduction enables a further analysis of the reduced data set in other tools that for example detect request patterns. Our approach is based on a specialized graph that is constructed from an event trace. This paper describes a systematic methodology to reduce the initial graph by merging adjacent vertices. As an extension we also describe how this merging step can be combined with the graph construction which significantly reduces the runtime of the algorithm in practice. An example that demonstrates the practical application of the methodology to real world use cases concludes the paper. After applying the reduction operation to application traces in the example the amount of synchronization events remaining is in the order of the number of I/O events. © 2010 IEEE.

parallel garbage collection seeks to exploit the inherent parallelism of graph tracing by evenly distributing the set of objects in the heap among all available processing resources. Any straightforward implementation, however, suffers from prohibitive overheads since each access to the worklist of objects and to the objects themselves needs to be protected by synchronization, especially so in the case of compacting collectors. For this reason, known parallel collectors sacrifice a great deal of work distribution granularity and scalability to keep the synchronization costs acceptable. In this paper, we present a case study of a different approach. Our parallel compacting collector is based on Cheney's copying algorithm, employs a single worklist and distributes garbage collection work on an object-by-object basis. This way, it achieves well balanced work distribution and good scalability. To solve the synchronization problem, we introduce a low-cost multi-core garbage collection coprocessor and take advantage of hardware-supported synchronization. We built an FPGA-based prototype with a single-core main processor supported by a multi-core garbage collection coprocessor. Measurement results show that an 8-core garbage collection coprocessor decreases the duration of garbage collection cycles by a factor of up to 7.4, while a 16-core configuration still achieves a factor of up to 12.1. © 2010 IEEE.

Formal dynamic verification can complement MPI program testing by detecting hard-to-find concurrency bugs. In previous work, we described our dynamic verifier called In-situ Partial Order (ISP) that can parsimoniously search the execution space of an MPI program while detecting important classes of bugs. One major limitation of ISP, when used by itself, is the lack of a powerful and widely usable graphical front-end. We now present a new tool called Graphical Explorer of MPI Programs (GEM) that overcomes this limitation. GEM is a plug-in architecture that greatly enhances the usability of ISP, and serves to bring ISP within reach of a wide array of programmers with its original release as part of the Eclipse Foundation's parallel Tools Platform (PTP) Version 3.0 in December, 2009. GEM is now a part of the PTP End-User Runtime. This paper describes GEM's features, its architecture, and usage experience summary of the ISP/GEM combination. Recently, we applied this combination on a widely used parallel hypergraph partitioner. Even with modest amounts of computational resources, the ISP/GEM combination finished quickly and intuitively displayed a previously unknown resource leak in this code-base. Here, we also describe the process and benefits of using GEM throughout the development cycle of our own test case, an MPI implementation of the A* search. We conclude with a summary of our future plans. © 2010 IEEE.

Call path profiling is a scalable measurement technique that has been shown to provide insight into the performance characteristics of complex modular programs. However, poor presentation of accurate and precise call path profiles obscures insight. To enable rapid analysis of an execution's performance bottlenecks, we make the following contributions for effectively presenting call path profiles. First, we combine a relatively small set of complementary presentation techniques to form a coherent synthesis that is greater than the constituent parts. Second, we extend existing presentation techniques to rapidly focus an analyst's attention on performance bottlenecks. In particular, we (1) show how to scalably present three complementary views of callingcontext- sensitive metrics;(2) treat a procedure's static structure as first-class information with respect to both performance metrics and constructing views;(3) enable construction of a large variety of user-defined metrics to assess performance inefficiency;and (4) automatically expand hot paths based on arbitrary performance metrics - through calling contexts and static structure - to rapidly highlight important program contexts. Our work is implemented within HPCTOOLKIT, which collects call path profiles using low-overhead asynchronous sampling. © 2010 IEEE.

The pervasive use of networks and the Internet has led the number of connected computing resources to grow tremendously, thus creating opportunity and need for heterogeneous computing systems. Furthermore, heterogeneity also is present in emerging computer architectures. The emerging computational grid infrastructure consists of heterogeneous resources in widely distributed autonomous domains, which makes job scheduling very challenging. Although there is much work on static scheduling approaches for workflow applications in parallel environments, little work has been done on a real-world Grid environment for industrial systems. Utility management systems (UMS) are executing very large numbers of workflows with very high resource requirements. Unlike the grid approach for standard scientific workflows, UMS workflows have different set of computation requirements and thereby optimization of resource usage has to be made in a different way. This paper proposes architecture for a new scheduling mechanism that dynamically executes a scheduling algorithm using near real-time feedback about current status Grid nodes. Two Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) were created in order to solve scheduling problem. First ANN predicts future state of Grid based on current state and types of workflows that are currently executing. Second ANN output is optimal workflow type that should be executed. Inputs for second ANN are current state of the Grid and predicted future state (output of first ANN). Performance tests show that significant improvement of overall execution time can be achieved by this Hierarchical Artificial Neural Networks.

In this paper, we propose a taxonomy that characterizes and classifies different components of autonomic application management in Grids. We also survey several representative Grid systems developed by various projects world-wide to demonstrate the comprehensiveness of the taxonomy. The taxonomy not only highlights the similarities and differences of state-of-the-art technologies utilized in autonomic application management from the perspective of Grid computing, but also identifies the areas that require further research initiatives.

Operating systems traditionally handle the task scheduling of one or more application instances on a processor like hardware architecture. Novel runtime adaptive hardware exploits the dynamic reconfiguration on FPGAs, where hardware blocks are generated, started and terminated. This is similar to software tasks in well established operating system approaches. The hardware counterparts to the software tasks have to be transferred to the reconfigurable hardware via a configuration access port. This port enables the allocation of hardware blocks on the FPGA. Current reconfigurable hardware, like e.g. Xilinx Virtex 5 provide two internal configuration access ports (ICAPs), where only one of these ports can be accessed at one point of time. In e.g. a multiprocessor system on an FPGA, it can happen that multiple instances try to access these ports simultaneously. To prevent conflicts, the access to these ports as well as the hardware resource management needs to be controlled by a special purpose operating system running on an embedded processor. This special purpose operating system, called CAPOS (Configuration Access Port-Operating System), which will be presented in this paper, supports the clients using the configuration port with the service of priority-based access scheduling, hardware task mapping and resource management.
