As grids are in essence heterogeneous, dynamic, shared and distributed environments, managing these kinds of platforms efficiently is extremely complex. Few transparent grid management systems have been developed to cope with these characteristics simultaneously and therefore both new and existing applications must be modified to execute efficiently. A promising scalable approach to deal with these intricacies is the design of self-managing or autonomic applications. Autonomic applications adapt their execution accordingly by considering knowledge about their own behaviour and environmental conditions. This paper focuses on the dynamic scheduling that provides the self-optimizing ability in autonomic applications. Being distributed, collaborative and pro-active, the proposed hierarchical scheduling infrastructure addresses important issues to enable an efficient execution in a computational grid. Unlike other approaches, the cooperative, hybrid and application-specific strategy deals effectively with task dependencies. Several experiments have been analyzed in real grid environments highlighting the efficiency and scalability of the proposed infrastructure. This paper presents an intra-site dynamic scheduling heuristic for tightly coupled parallel applications represented by DAGs. Copyright 2008 ACM.

In this paper, we pay attention to the periodic task scheduling on a variable voltage processor with d discrete voltage/speed levels. We propose an intra-task DVS algorithm which constructs a minimum energy schedule for k tasks in O(d+k log k) time. We also give an inter-task DVS algorithm with O(d+n log n) time, where n denotes the number of jobs. Previous approaches solve this problem by first generating a canonical schedule and then adjusting the speed in O(dn log n) or O(n(3)) time. However, they do not consider that the length of a canonical schedule depends on the LCM of those of task periods and is of exponential length in general. In our approach, the tasks with arbitrary periods are first transformed into harmonic periods and then profile their key features. Afterward, the (optimal) discrete solution can be computed directly from these features.

Task scheduling has been a key issue to improve parallel execution in distributed systems. Master-Slave task scheduling, as a technique of mapping and scheduling loads to heterogeneous platforms, has aroused interests of many researchers. Although minimizing the Master-Slave application's makespan (the overall completion time) in general case is a NP-complete problem, it is still meaningful in some special fields. In this paper, we aim at improving the performance of the Master-Slave pattern applications in the case with a large number of equal-sized and independent tasks and propose a new strategy EOMT (Equilibrium Overhead with Multi-cycle Tasking) for task scheduling in the grid environment. The EOMT strategy is designed for the grid environment with heterogeneous resources. The main concept of EOMT is to make the workload assigned to each slave node as even as possible to reduce applications makespan. A detailed analysis for Master-Slave task scheduling is given in this paper. Experiment results show that our strategy outperforms other traditional task scheduling strategies in different computation and network resource combinations in the grid environment.

Data-intensive applications often require exploratory analysis of large datasets. If analysis is performed on distributed resources, data locality can be crucial to high throughput and performance. We propose a "data diffusion" approach that acquires compute and storage resources dynamically, replicates data in response to demand, and schedules computations close to data. As demand increases, more resources are acquired, thus allowing faster response to subsequent requests that refer to the same data;when demand drops, resources are released. This approach can provide the benefits of dedicated hardware without the associated high costs, depending on workload and resource characteristics. The approach is reminiscent of cooperative caching, web-caching, and peer-to-peer storage systems, but addresses different application demands. Other data-aware scheduling approaches assume dedicated resources, which can be expensive and/or inefficient if load varies significantly. To explore the feasibility of the data diffusion approach, we have extended the Falkon resource provisioning and task scheduling system to support data caching and data-aware scheduling. Performance results from both micro-benchmarks and a large scale astronomy application demonstrate that our approach improves performance relative to alternative approaches, as well as provides improved scalability as aggregated I/O bandwidth scales linearly with the number of data cache nodes. As high performance and distributed computing become more important tools for enabling scientists and engineers to solve large computational problems, the need for methods to fairly and efficiently schedule tasks across multiple, possibly geographically distributed, computing resources becomes more crucial. Given the nature of distributed systems and the immense numbers of resources to be managed in distributed and large-scale cluster environments, traditional centralized schedulers will not be extremely effective at providing timely scheduling information. In order to manage large numbers of resources quickly, less computationally intensive methods for scheduling tasks must be explored. This paper proposes a novel resource management system based on the immune system metaphor, making use of the concepts in Immune Network Theory and Danger Theory. By emulating various elements in the immune system, the proposed manager could efficiently execute tasks on very large systems of heterogeneous resources across geographic and/or administrative domains. The distributed nature of the immune system is also exploited in order to allow efficient scheduling of tasks, even in extremely large environments, without the use of a centralized or hierarchical scheduler.

In distributed computer networks where resources are tinder decentralized control, selfish users will generally riot work towards one common goal, Such as maximizing the overall value provided by the system, but will instead try to strategically maximize their individual benefit. This shifts the scheduling policy in such systems - the decision about which user may access what resource - from being a purely algorithmic challenge to the domain of mechanism design. In this paper we will showcase the benefit of allowing preemption in such economic online settings regarding the performance of market mechanisms by extending the Decentralized Local Greedy Mechanism of Heydenreich et al. [11]. This mechanism was shown to be 3.281-competitive with respect to total weighted completion time if the players act rationally. We show that the preemptive version of this mechanism is 2-competitive. As a by-product, preemption allows to relax the assumptions on jobs upon which this competitiveness relies. In addition to this worst case analysis, we provide an in-depth empirical analysis of the average case performance of the original mechanism and its preemptive extension based on real workload traces. Our empirical findings indicate that introducing preemption improves both the utility and the slowdown of the jobs. Furthermore, this improvement does not come at the expense of low-priority jobs.

As users increasingly require better quality of service from grids, resource management and scheduling mechanisms have to evolve in order to satisfy competing demands on limited resources. Traditional schedulers for grids are system centric and favour system performance over increasing userpsilas utility. On the other hand market oriented schedulers are price-based systems that favour users but are based solely on user valuations. This paper proposes a novel meta-scheduler that unifies the advantages of both the systems for benefiting both users and resources. In order to do that, we design a valuation metric for userpsilas applications and computational resources based on multi-criteria requirements of users and resource load. The meta-scheduler maps user applications to suitable distributed resources using a continuous double auction (CDA). Through simulation, we compare our scheduling mechanism against other common mechanisms used by current meta-schedulers. The results show that our meta-scheduler mechanism can satisfy more users than the others while still meeting traditional system-centric performance criteria such as average load and deadline of applications.
