Purdue University operates one of the largest cycle recovery systems in existence in academia based on the Condor workload management system. This system represents a valuable and useful cyberinfrastructure (CI) resource supporting research and education for campus and national users. During the construction and operation of this CI, we encountered many unforeseen challenges and benefits unique to an actively used infrastructure of this size. The most significant problems were integrating Condor with existing campus HPC resources, managing resource and user growth, coping with the distributed ownership of compute resources around campus, and integrating this CI with the Tera-Grid and Open Science Grid. In this paper, we describe some of our experiences and establish some best practices, which we believe will be valuable and useful to other academic institutions seeking to operate a production campus cyberinfrastructure of a similar scale and utility.

Grid computing, one of the latest buzzwords in the ICT industry, is emerging as a new paradigm for Internet-based parallel and distributing computing. Despite a number of advances in grid computing, resource management and application scheduling in such environments continues to be a challenging and complex undertaking. This is due to geographic distribution of grid resources owned by different organizations with different usage policies, cost models and varying load and availability patterns with time. This tutorial introduces fundamental principles of grid computing and computational economy and discusses how they impact on emerging computational and data grid technologies. It identifies resource management challenges and introduces new challenges and requirements introduced by the grid economy on grid service providers (GSPs) and grid service consumers. The tutorial presents a service-oriented grid architecture inspired by computational economies and demonstrates how it can be realized by leveraging the existing grid technologies and building new economic-oriented capabilities and components. We present solutions to these challenges based on our experience in designing and developing market-oriented Gridbus technologies such as Grid Market Directory, Grid Bank, Grid Service Broker, Workflow Engine, and SLA-based enterprise Grid resource Allocation system. Case studies on the use of Gridbus middleware in the creation of various e-science and e-business applications and their deployment on national/international utility-oriented grids along with its impact on emerging cloud computing paradigm will also be highlighted.

Managing concurrency is a fundamental requirement for any multi-threaded system, frequently implemented by serializing critical code regions or using object locks on shared resources. Storage systems are one case of this, where multiple clients may wish to access or modify on-disk objects concurrently yet safely. Data consistency may be provided by an inter-client protocol, or it can be implemented in the file system server or storage device. In this work we demonstrate ways of enabling atomic operations on object-based storage devices (OSDs), in particular, the compare-and-swap and fetch-and-add atomic primitives. With examples from basic disk resident data structures to higher level applications like file systems, we show how atomics-capable storage devices can be used to solve consistency requirements of distributed algorithms. Offloading consistency management to storage devices obviates the need for dedicated lock manager servers.

In this paper, we first introduce a simple tool called the wavelet or sigma-wavelet scheme. Wavelets deal with coordination among processes which are at most sigma hops away of each other. We propose a self-stabilizing solution for this scheme. Our solution requires no underlying structure and works in arbitrary anonymous settings, i.e., where process identifiers are not required. We show that our solution provides a simple and generic self-stabilizing sigma-infimum computation. Next, we present a self-stabilizing sigma-barrier synchronization protocol based on the wavelet scheme. We show that our protocol provides an efficient device in the design of local coordination problems at distance sigma, such as the sigma-local resource allocation (LRA). In particular, we propose a solution for the popular sigma-local mutual exclusion (LME) problem. The solution to sigma-LME also provides a transformer to transform algorithms written under sigma-central daemon into algorithms working with any distributed daemon.

In this paper we investigate the use of infrastructure half-duplex amplify-and-forward (AF) relays in the downlink of a multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, which uses linear precoding based on block-diagonalization. Owing to the half-duplex mode of the relay, the communication is divided into two time-slots. During the first time-slot the relay nodes are treated as an additional mobile station (MS), while during the second time-slot the base-station (BS) and the relays form a distributed, virtual antenna array. In contrast to many relay applications, the purpose of the proposed scheme is not to increase diversity, but rather to increase the system throughput at the borders of a communication cell or in areas with a high user density. The performance of the proposed architecture is investigated by examining the sum-capacity of the system as well as the distribution of the capacity over the cell-area.

The ever-increasing of the large geospatial datasets and the widely application of the complex geocomputation make the parallel processing of GIS an important component of high-performance computing. The paper introduces a two-phase load-balancing scheme for the parallel GIS operations in distributed environment. The paper focus on the parallel framework design and parallel strategy implement of the spatial operations in GIS. Two major aspects of the spatial data partitioning and dynamic load schedule are discussed in detail, declustering the massive data sets into two parts hierarchically: the dynamic share data and the static local data. In the experimental test, we build up the analytical cost model and evaluate the utilize rate of computational power and I/O resource, and analyze the efficiency of the proposed parallel prototype.

Large-scale computing environments, such as TeraGrid, distributed ASCI Supercomputer (DAS), and Gridpsila5000, have been using resource co-allocation to execute applications on multiple sites. Their schedulers work with requests that contain imprecise estimations provided by users. This lack of accuracy generates fragments inside the scheduling queues that can be filled by rescheduling both local and multi-site requests. Current resource co-allocation solutions rely on advance reservations to ensure that users can access all the resources at the same time. These coallocation requests cannot be rescheduled if they are based on rigid advance reservations. In this work, we investigate the impact of rescheduling co-allocation requests based on flexible advance reservations and processor remapping. The metascheduler can modify the start time of each job component and remap the number of processors they use in each site. The experimental results show that local jobs may not fill all the fragments in the scheduling queues and hence rescheduling co-allocation requests reduces response time of both local and multi-site jobs. Moreover, we have observed in some scenarios that processor remapping increases the chances of placing the tasks of multi-site jobs into a single cluster, thus eliminating the inter-cluster network overhead.

Grid is a collection of distributed computing resources that performs tasks in co-ordination to achieve high-end computational capabilities by dividing a given task into sub-tasks. Each sub-task could be large and run for several hours or days on a number of grid nodes. If a sub-task fails to complete even on a single site, all the computations should be performed again. In scalable distributed systems, an individual component failure usually does not result in failure of the entire system. The probability of a single component failure rises rapidly with the increase in number of components in the system. As system grows in size, efficient recovery mechanism is most important for highly parallel mission critical and long running applications of grid environment. This paper addresses a recovery mechanism using checkpoints to recover from grid service failure resulting in task or transaction failure in computational or data grid which will prevent computations to be restarted from scratch. This work helps in preserving two main objectives of grid namely optimal resource utilization and speedy computations, which can be achieved by using resources in a better way for improving performance of the system rather than engaging them in tasks like rollbacks resulting from cascading aborts. This work aims to address checkpointing mechanism to recover from system failure leading to failure of running services and computational tasks or transactions being executed. The saved state using checkpoints can also be used for job migration using job schedulers of grid.

Grid simulation tools provide frameworks for simulating application scheduling in various Grid infrastructures. However, while experimenting with many existing tools, we have encountered two main shortcomings: (i) there are no tools for generating workloads, resources and events;(ii) it is difficult and time consuming to model different Grid levels, i.e. resource brokers, and local level scheduling systems. In this paper we present the Grid scheduling Simulator (GSSIM), a framework that addresses these shortcomings and provides an easy-to-use Grid scheduling framework for enabling simulations of a wide range of scheduling algorithms in multi-level, heterogeneous Grid infrastructures. In order to foster more collaboration in the community at large, GSSIM is complemented with a portal (http://***) that provides a repository of Grid scheduling algorithms, synthetic workloads and benchmarks for use with GSSIM.
