A large number of resource locating algorithms have been proposed in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks. However, the query efficiency of most existing methods is limited to large-scale P2P networks. In this paper, we propose a new decentralized P2P architecture, by taking advantage of the heterogeneous characters of nodes to integrate the resources of stable nodes, and simplify the management of dynamic nodes based on two different types of clustering. In our proposed architecture, group-based semantic overlay network is formed by node clustering and resources of stable nodes are organized by a set of cooperative resource clustering frameworks. When a query is generated, it will be first processed in local group, and if it fails to hit the targets, it will be relayed to the resource clustering frameworks. Simulation shows that this architecture can greatly reduce the search traffic in large-scale P2P networks.

The resource Description Framework provides a powerful model for structured knowledge representation that allows the inference of new knowledge. Because of the anticipated scope of semantic information available in the future, centralized databases will become incapable of handling the load. Peer-to-Peer based distributed databases offer better scalability and integration of many different data sources. In this paper we present a detailed data management strategy for a DHT based RDF store that provides reasoning, robustness, and load-balancing.

Contemporary production grids do not usually offer the flexibility users are looking for. While different user communities have often contradictory requirements on the operating system, libraries, and applications, the production Grids provide only one rigid environment. This rigidness can be overcome by virtualization, when every user community or even individual user can be provided with its own instance of a virtual Grid, running optimized and tailored operating system and services. The promise of higher flexibility of virtual Grids is compensated by the increase in scheduling complexity. In this paper, we present the Magrathea system that extends the Grid resourcemanagementsystems with support for virtual environment. After discussing the design requirements, we introduce the Magrathea architecture that consists of three components: the master and slave processes running on virtualized resources and the cache process to provide the information about virtual machine state to the scheduler. Two virtual machines sharing one physical resource and used exclusively, preemption of a lower priority job running in a virtual machine, support for more than two concurrently domains and support for "frozen" services that are repeatedly invoked and suspended are the use scenarios discussed in the second part of the paper. We demonstrate how they are supported by the Magrathea system and what modifications to the Grid resourcemanagement system are necessary. The Magrathea is currently in the pre-production use on the Czech national Grid environment METACenter. Copyright 2007 ACM.

Blue Genereg/P are a massively parallel supercomputer intended as the successor to Blue Gene/L. It leverages much of the existing architecture of its predecessor to provide scalability up to a petaflop of peak computing power. The resourcemanagement software for such a large parallel system faces several challenges, including system fragmentation due to partitioning, presenting resource usage information using a polling or event driven model, and acting as a barrier between external resourcemanagementsystems and the Blue Gene/P core. This paper describes how the Blue Gene/P resourcemanagement architecture is extremely flexible by providing multiple methodologies for obtaining resource usage information to make scheduling decisions. Three distinctly separate resourcemanagement services can be described. First, the Bridge API, a full-featured API suitable for fine tuning scheduling and allocation decisions. Second, a light-weight allocator API for allocating resources without substantial development costs. And lastly, configuring the system into static partitions. Job scheduling strategies utilizing each of the methods can be discussed.

Performing delegation in large scale, dynamic and distributed environments with large numbers of shared resources is more challenging than inside local administrative domains. In dynamic environments like Grids, on one hand, delegating a restricted set of rights reduces exposure to attack but also limits the flexibility and dynamism of the application;on the other hand, delegating all rights provides maximum flexibility but increases exposure. This issue has not yet been adequately addressed by current Grid security mechanisms and is becoming a very challenging and crucial issue for future Grid development. Therefore, providing an effective delegation mechanism which meets the requirements of the least privilege principle is becoming an essential need. Furthermore, we are witnessing a phenomenal increase in the automation of organizational tasks and decision making, as well as the computerization of information related services, requiring automated delegation mechanisms. In order to meet these requirements we introduce an Active Delegation Framework which extends our previous work on on-demand delegation, making it context-aware. The framework provides a just-in-time, restricted and dynamic delegation mechanism for Grids. In this paper we describe the development of this framework and its implementation and integration with the Globus Toolkit.

Grid simulation tools provide frameworks for simulating application scheduling in various grid infrastructures. However, while experimenting with many existing tools, we have encountered two main shortcomings: (i) there are no tools for generating workloads, resources and events ; (ii) it is difficult and time consuming to model different grid levels, i.e. resource brokers, and local level schedulingsystems. In this paper we present the grid scheduling simulator (GSSIM), a framework that addresses these shortcomings and provides an easy-to-use Grid scheduling framework for enabling simulations of a wide range of scheduling algorithms in multi-level, heterogeneous grid infrastructures. In order to foster more collaboration in the community at large, GSSIM is complemented with a portal (http://***) that provides a repository of grid scheduling algorithms, synthetic workloads and benchmarks for use with GSSIM.
