In a dynamic environment like grid, it is difficult to manage resources at application or user level. In order to support application execution in the context of grid, a resource broker is essential and the task of resource brokering in such a heterogeneous, fast changing, distributed environment is non-trivial. In this paper we present the design and implementation of resource brokering strategies within a multi-agent framework. These strategies help in finding out an optimal allocation of resources for executing multiple concurrent jobs in a grid environment. We discuss the different stages in resource brokering and their implementation within the framework. The paper also presents results of a preliminary implementation and demonstrates the effectiveness of our strategies.

Understanding how resources are allocated in a cluster or grid environment can be a daunting task. The number of schedulable processors has increased dramatically, resulting in a greater need for resource allocation analysis tools. This increase comes from hardware developments as well as inter-domain resource sharing. This paper describes a toolset for monitoring the allocation of resources in a high performance computing cluster or grid environment. Specifically, we are interested in monitoring and analyzing the allocation of resources in a batch scheduled universe. The aim is to categorize the data so that it is useful for understanding particular questions about resource allocation.

Contemporary production grids do not usually offer the flexibility users are looking for. While different user communities have often contradictory requirements on the operating system, libraries, and applications, the production Grids provide only one rigid environment. This rigidness can be overcome by virtualization, when every user community or even individual user can be provided with its own instance of a virtual Grid, running optimized and tailored operating system and services. The promise of higher flexibility of virtual Grids is compensated by the increase in scheduling complexity. In this paper, we present the Magrathea system that extends the Grid resource management systems with support for virtual environment. After discussing the design requirements, we introduce the Magrathea architecture that consists of three components: the master and slave processes running on virtualized resources and the cache process to provide the information about virtual machine state to the scheduler. Two virtual machines sharing one physical resource and used exclusively, preemption of a lower priority job running in a virtual machine, support for more than two concurrently domains and support for "frozen" services that are repeatedly invoked and suspended are the use scenarios discussed in the second part of the paper. We demonstrate how they are supported by the Magrathea system and what modifications to the Grid resource management system are necessary. The Magrathea is currently in the pre-production use on the Czech national Grid environment META Center.

Grid computing is becoming a prominent field of interest for distributed systems. The capability to support resource sharing between different organizations and the high level of performance are noteworthy features. However, to define, deploy and execute grid applications require significant design effort and complex resource coordination, which can be alleviated by using workflow management systems. This technology is more and more adopted in distributed systems and grids since it ensures easiness and flexibility at design-time and performance and dynamicity at run-time. This paper gives a contribution to performance improvements of workflow by presenting a technique to exploit fine-grained concurrency at run-time. The technique is implemented in a workflow enactment service that dynamically optimizes process execution limiting the design effort of application developers

In grid systems, users may require assurance for completing their jobs on shared resources. Such guarantees can only be provided by reserving resources in advance. In this paper, we introduce an elastic reservation model, where users can query about a resource availability on a given time interval. They can also provide a reservation duration time and/or number of compute nodes needed as soft constraints to the query. Next, we provide an adapted version of an on-line strip packing algorithm, that takes into a consideration of resource utilization when processing reservation requests. We evaluate our algorithm with a real workload trace and show that the proposed algorithm manages a higher resource utilization and number of acceptance compared to an ad-hoc rigid approach.

System builders are becoming increasingly interested in robust design. We believe that a methodology for generating robustness metrics helps the robust design research efforts and, in general, is an important step in the efforts to create robust computing systems. The purpose of the research in this paper is to quantify the robustness of a resource allocation, with the eventual objective of setting a standard that could easily be instantiated for a particular computing system to generate robustness metric. We present our theoretical foundation for robustness metric and give its instantiation for a particular system.

This paper proposes a dynamic scheduler that supports the coexistence of guaranteed and non-guaranteed bandwidth servers to efficiently handle soft-tasks' overloads by making additional capacity available from two sources: (i) residual capacity allocated but unused when jobs complete in less than their budgeted execution time; (ii) stealing capacity from inactive non-isolated servers used to schedule best-effort jobs. The effectiveness of the proposed approach in reducing the mean tardiness of periodic jobs is demonstrated through extensive simulations. The achieved results become even more significant when tasks' computation times have a large variance.

The development of object-based storage devices (OSDs), widely regarded as a promising storage standard, is sprouting up these days. In this paper, we bring forward a new framework of resource allocation to achieve load balancing for OSD storage systems. Compared with traditional researches that schedule requests passively, we exploit the intelligence of object storage target (OST) to generate local resource information, which is combines with the global information synthesized by the Metadata Server (MDS) to balance workloads and tune the performance. To attain this goal, a dynamic adjustment strategy is proposed to calculate some resource-related factors by MDS as well as OST, which guide each OST to adjust the data distribution and assign which OST should process a new request. Moreover, how to extend the object attributes of OSD standard to achieve this strategy is also introduced. At last, the experimental results demonstrate that this method can balance the load among OSTs fairly.

resource scheduling in large-scale, volatile desktop grids is challenging because resource state is both dynamic and eclectic. Matching available resources with requests is not always possible with existing approaches. Partial dissemination protocols, such as gossiping, may provide efficient schedules when resource requesters are located near providers that can meet their needs. However, when requesters are distant from available resources, regular information dissemination techniques can waste communication bandwidth with futile messages. Thus, it may be advantageous to attempt to advertise to select remote regions of the grid, without necessarily also going through all intermediate nodes. This paper proposes dissemination proxies to increase coverage footprints and reduce dissemination overhead. We incorporate selecting and adjusting the amount of proxy nodes into an adaptive dissemination algorithm, and show that dissemination proxies are able to reduce dissemination overhead, and handle available resource distribution scenarios where regular information dissemination approaches may not produce efficient protocols. We also report initial results that indicate that randomly selecting nodes to serve as proxies can perform as well as strategies that select seemingly better-qualified proxies.
