OBIGrid provides high-throughput GRIDBLAST services (OBICbs) for researchers who need to deal with many BLAST query sequences at one time by exploiting both distributed processing and parallel processing. A new application-oriented grid framework has been introduced to split a BLAST query into independent sub-queries and to execute the sub-queries on remote personal computers and PC clusters connected by a virtual private network (VPN) over the Internet. The framework consists of five functional units: query splitter, job dispatcher, task manager, result collector and result formatter. They enable us to develop a cooperative GRIDBLAST system between a server and heterogeneous remote worker nodes: which consist of various computer architectures, different BLAST implementations and different Job schedulers operated by local resourcemanagement policy. The OBIGbs can execute 29,941 PSI-BLAST query sequences in 8.31 hours when using 230 CPUs in total and can return a 1.37 Giga byte result file.

Supporting distributed real-time applications in large-scale and heterogeneous distributed environments has attracted much attention recently. However, the decentralized and dynamic characteristics of the systems present a number of challenges in managing the processor and networking resources and scheduling the application execution across multiple peers. In this paper, we address these problems with a novel resourcemanagement architecture for scheduling soft real-time applications in overlay networks. Key to our approach is that nodes maintain a partial view of resource availability of their peers in local profiles, keep track of the urgency of the requests and balance application execution across multiple nodes. Our techniques are entirely decentralized and use only local knowledge considering unpredictable latencies and changing resource availability.

Challenging usage policy issues can arise within virtual organizations (VOs) that integrate participants and resources spanning multiple physical institutions. Participants may wish to delegate to one or more VOs the right to use certain resources subject to local policy and service level agreements; each VO then wishes to use those resources subject to VO policy. How are such local and VO policies to be expressed, discovered, interpreted, and enforced? As a first step to addressing these questions, we develop and evaluate policy management solutions within a specialized context, namely scientific data grids within which the resources to be shared are computers and storage. We propose an architecture and recursive policy model, and define roles and functions, for schedulingresources in grid environments while satisfying resource owner and VO policies.

Rapid advances in network and computer technologies are making networked computers, organized in the form of grid, an appealing vehicle for cost-effective parallel computing. But how to handle efficiently the communications in scheduling is still a main obstacle to using these resources. In this paper, we tackle this problem by partitioning resources into groups in a parallel and distributed fashion. resources with good communication performance to each other are clustered into a same group. Based on our observation that communication latencies between adjacent resources are much less than those between non-adjacent ones with high possibility, flooding with a small TTL (time-to-live) can inherently exploit the proximity property between resources, which improves greatly the efficiency of our partitioning work. Wireless ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) networks have already become important due to the progress of ATM technique and wireless communications. This paper focuses on the characteristics of wireless ATM networks based on the multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) technique. This paper proposes an improved cell-scheduling algorithm (ICSA) and a dynamic resource allocation scheme (DRAS) with a resource compensation method to improve performance. The performance measurements, such as handoff call dropping probability and new call blocking probability, are obtained by an analytical model and simulation experiments and compared for the different schemes. The proposed algorithms perform better than the other algorithms according to the obtained results.
