Computational Grids are emerging as a new infrastructure for Internet-based parallel and distributed computing. They enable the sharing, exchange, discovery, and aggregation of resources distributed across multiple administrative domains, organizations and enterprises. To accomplish this, Grids need infrastructure that supports various services: security, uniform access, resource management, scheduling, application composition, computational economy, and accounting. Although several initiatives are engaged in the development of Grid technologies, Grid accounting issues are yet to be addressed. To overcome this limitation, we propose a new infrastructure called GridBank that provides services for accounting. The support of computational economy and accounting services can lead to a self-regulated accountability in Grid computing. This paper presents requirements of Grid accounting and different economic models within which it can operate and proposes a Grid Accounting Services Architecture to meet them. The paper highlights implementation issues with a detailed discussion on the format for various records/databases that the GridBank needs to maintain. It also presents protocols for interaction between the GridBank and various components within Grid computing environments.

Grid technologies enable large-scale resource sharing among enterprises and/or individuals. In such settings, control policies must be administered so that resource cart be fairly shared among participating enterprises. A grid-based clearinghouse for managing shared resources is built with the aim of promoting technical and scientific cooperation within and between campuses. We therefore, need a global mechanism for exchanging and integrating resource and hence, maximize computation throughput through the coordination of shared resources. The major process involved is the development of a job management strategy that realizes the objectives of the clearinghouse. In this paper, we introduce the design and application of a decentralized hierarchical scheduler for job management. A working testbed for this scheduler is to be implemented on a campus grid. The campus grid is a hierarchical grid that is built with the Globus Toolkit inter-operated with a group of Sungrid Engine clusters.

Load balancing is a key concern when developing parallel and distributed computing applications. The emergence of computational grids extends this problem, where issues of cross-domain and large-scale scheduling must also be considered. In this paper an agent-based grid management infrastructure is coupled with a performance-driven task scheduler that has been developed for local grid load balancing. Each grid scheduler utilises predictive application performance data and an iterative heuristic algorithm to engineer local load balancing across multiple processing nodes. At a higher level, a hierarchy of homogeneous agents are used to represent multiple grid resources. Agents cooperate with each other to balance workload in the global grid environment using service advertisement and discovery mechanisms. A case study is included with corresponding experimental results to demonstrate that both local schedulers and agents contribute to overall grid load balancing, which significantly improves grid application execution performance and resource utilisation.

scheduling problems concern the allocation of limited resources over time among both parallel and sequential activities. The majority of these problems belong to the class of NP-hard. Agent-based approaches have been applied to solve difficult scheduling problems. Load balancing is usually adopted as an optimization criterion for some scheduling problems, such as resource allocation in grid computing environments. However, in many practical situations, a load balanced solution may not be feasible or attainable. To deal with this limitation, this paper presents a generic mathematical model of load distribution for resource allocation, called desired load distribution. The objective is to develop a model that can be utilized for classical resource management settings as well as a model for a many-to-many optimized market setting.

The grid enables large-scale resource sharing and makes it viable for running large-scale parallel and distributed simulations. The high level architecture (HLA) paradigm provides a software platform and interoperability interface for simulation components to utilize these hardware resources. However, neither the grid nor the HLA provides mechanism for resource management for parallel and distributed simulations. It is also noticed that substantial effort is required for writing program that conforms to the runtime infrastructure (RTI) requirements because of its complexity. In this paper, we introduce a framework for designing and executing parallel simulation using the RTI. The framework is also designed to assist load balancing and checkpointing. With the code library from our framework, the modeler is able to complete the design of a parallel simulation that runs on RTI by specifying the simulation configuration and the handling detail of each event. Our framework incorporates automatic code generation. It also uses data distribution management (DDM) to route simulation events (interactions) to achieve efficient use of network bandwidth.

In this paper we study the fundamental problem of allocating with efficiency and fairness the available resources in a CDMA wireless system that supports multi-rate multimedia services. We propose the Channel Adaptive Rate scheduling (CARS) algorithm which adopts the use of dynamically assigned data rates that match the channel capacity in order to improve the system throughput and overcome the problems associated with the channel changing conditions, the variable system capacity and the transmission power limitation. In addition to the throughput improvement CARS also achieves the objective of fairness by adjusting the users' weights dynamically. The performance analysis and evaluation of our proposed algorithm is achieved via modeling and simulation in terms of achievable throughput and fairness.

Reconfigurable hardware resources are very expensive, and yet can be underutilized. This paper describes a middleware capable of discovering underutilized computing nodes with FPGA-based accelerator boards in a networked environment. Using an extended job management system (JMS), this middleware permits sharing reconfigurable resources at least among the members of the same organization. Traditional resources, such as CPU time of loosely coupled workstations can be shared using a variety of existing job management systems (JMS). We analyzed four of these systems, LSF, Sun Grid Engine/CODINE, PBS Pro, and Condor from the point of view of their functional characteristics and ease of extension to support reconfigurable hardware. LSF was shown to efficiently address the majority of identified requirements. The general architecture of the extended system was developed, and the exact techniques of extending LSF, CODINE, and PBS Pro to manage FPGA-based accelerator boards were identified. The system architecture was verified experimentally for the specific case of LSF and three types of FPGA accelerator boards. The utilization of FPGA boards was demonstrated to reach up to 86% in our experimental setting consisting of Linux and Windows NT workstations.

Many network events need to be handled in a timely fashion. However, current practices are not sufficient to support timely handling of network events mainly due to the lack of a real-time network management model and facilities. In this paper, we propose a network management system, named a real-time distributed network management (RTDNM), in which the telecommunication management network (TMN) model and the time-triggered message-triggered object (TMO) model are incorporated to support network management facilities and timely handling of network events. In order to realize RTDNM, temporal characteristics of managed objects in a network are modeled and CMIS/CMIP, a network management protocol used in TMN, is annotated whit real-time constraints so that timely handling of network events can be supported. A message scheduling scheme for network management is proposed to guarantee timeliness for critical network events. Finally, we present the design of our RTDNM and show current results with a prototype implementation. The scheme presented turned out to be effective for timely handling of network events.

Managing resources and distributed workload across multiple administrative boundaries is a key issue in grid computing and middleware research. Standard services that perform look-up, match-making, scheduling and staging are being developed to address this problem. As active middleware components, these services will allow users to identify and utilize appropriate resources that provide sustainable system- and user-level qualities of service. This paper documents two enhanced match-making services that address the performance implications of executing a particular workload on a given set of resources. These services are based on an established performance prediction system that is employed at both the local (intra-domain) and global (multi-domain) levels to provide dynamic workload steering. These additional facilities bring about significant performance improvements, the details of which are presented with regard to the user-perceived quality of service and to the grid resource utilization.
