In a distributed heterogeneous computing system, the resources have different capabilities and tasks have different requirements. To maximize the performance of the system, it is essential to assign resources to tasks (match) and order the execution of tasks on each resource (schedule in a manner that exploits the heterogeneity of the resources and tasks. The mapping (defined as matching and scheduling) of tasks onto machines with varied computational capabilities has been shown, in general, to be an NP-complete problem. Therefore, heuristic techniques to find a near-optimal solution to this mapping problem are required. Dynamic mapping is performed when the arrival of tasks is not known a priori. In the heterogeneous environment considered in this study, tasks arrive randomly, tasks are independent (i.e., no communication among tasks), and tasks have priorities and multiple deadlines. This research proposes, evaluates, and compares eight dynamic heuristics. The performance of the best heuristics is 83% of an upper bound.

A fundamental problem in distributed computing is to map activities such as computation or data transfer onto resources that meet requirements for performance, cost, security, or other quality of service metrics. The creation of such mappings requires negotiation among application and resources to discover, reserve, acquire, configure, and monitor resources. Current resource management approaches tend to specialize for specific resource classes, and address coordination across resources only in a limited fashion. We present a new approach that overcomes these difficulties. We define a resource management model that distinguishes three kinds of resource-independent service level agreements (SLAs), formalizing agreements to deliver capability, perform activities, and bind activities to capabilities, respectively. We also define a Service Negotiation and Acquisition Protocol (SNAP) that supports reliable management of remote SLAs. Finally, we explain how SNAP can be deployed within the context of the Globus Toolkit.

Developers of mission-critical distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems face a fundamental tension between (1) the performance gains achievable with hand-crafted optimizations to systems built largely from scratch and (2) the development cost and cycle-time reductions offered by common off-the-shelf (COTS) middleware. This paper describes how the Kokyu portable middleware scheduling framework,, which is built using standards-based COTS middleware and OS primitives, can be used both to (1) maintain the flexibility and reuse offered by COTS middleware and (2) provide opportunities for domain-specific optimizations that are needed to meet stringent real-time performance requirements.

In RED-Linux kernel, a General scheduling Framework (GSF) has been implemented. Under GSF, different scheduling algorithms can be easily implemented. However GSF only addresses the scheduling of CPU. Other system resources are not considered. In this paper we propose a general resource management framework for various OS resources. When user applications request and consume system resources, they may use uniform APIs although each type of OS resource has its own properties and means to be controlled. In the resource management framework, we also allow the inter-relationship between different types of resources to be defined and managed. © 2002 IEEE.

resource management constitutes an important infrastructural component of a computational grid environment. The aim of grid resource management is to efficiently schedule applications over the available resources provided by the supporting grid architecture. Such goals within the high performance community rely, in part, on accurate performance prediction capabilities. This paper introduces a resource management infrastructure for grid computing environments. The technique couples application performance prediction with a hierarchical multi-agent system. An initial system implementation utilises the performance prediction capabilities of the PACE toolkit to provide quantitative data regarding the performance of complex applications running on local grid resources. The validation results show that a high level of accuracy can be obtained, that cross-platform comparisons can be easily undertaken, and that the estimates can be evaluated rapidly. A hierarchy of homogeneous agents are used to provide a scalable and adaptable abstraction of the grid system architecture. An agent is a representative of a local grid resource and is considered to be both a service provider and a service requestor. Agents are organised into a hierarchy and cooperate to provide service advertisement and discovery. A performance monitor and advisor has been developed to optimise the performance of the agent system. A case study with corresponding experimental results are included to demonstrate the efficiency of the resource management and scheduling system. The main features of the system include: hard quality of service support using PACE performance prediction capabilities;agent-based dynamic resource advertisement and discovery capabilities;simulation-based quantitative grid performance analysis and user-oriented scheduling of local grid resources. © 2002 IEEE.

Clusters of Workstations (COW) offer high performance relative to their cost. Generally these clusters operate as autonomous systems running independent copies of the operating system, where access to machines is not controlled and all users enjoy the same access privileges. While these features are desirable and reduce operating costs, they create adverse effects on parallel applications running on these clusters. Load imbalances are common for parallel applications on COWs due to: 1) variable amount of load on nodes caused by, an inherent lack of parallelism, 2) variable resource availability on nodes, and 3) independent scheduling decisions made by the independent schedulers on each node. Our earlier study has shown that an approach combining static program analysis, dynamic load balancing, and scheduler cooperation is effective in countering the adverse effects mentioned above. In our current study, we investigate the scalability of our approach as the number of processors is increased, We further relax the requirement of global synchronization, avoiding the need to use barriers and allowing the use of any other synchronization primitives while still achieving dynamic load balancing, The use of alternative synchronization primitives avoids the inherent vulnerability of barriers to load imbalance. It also allows load balancing to take place at any point in the course of execution, rather than only at a synchronization point, potentially reducing the time the application runs imbalanced. Moreover, load readjustment decisions are made in a distributed fashion, thus preventing any need for processes to globally synchronize in order to redistribute load.

This paper presents a novel wireless scheduling mechanism, called Adaptive Service Curve (ASC). The proposed mechanism increases the flexibility with which network operators can adjust the allocation of resources. A good scheduler should exhibit three kinds of flexibility. First, ASC should be able to differentiate the error resilience requirements due to the impact of location-dependent channel errors in wireless networks. Specifically, ASC can employ link adaptation, enabling a choice to be made between maximizing system throughput and making more link effort on error-prone channels. Second, the above flexibility is not system-wide. Rather users can subscribe to different error resilience policies. ASC utilizes the service curve model that can best meet QoS requirements to provide the third kind of flexibility, and prevents an unacceptable over-allocation of radio resources. Accordingly, a framework is proposed to make the existing service curve model operate effectively in wireless environments. The ASC scheduler combines in a single-framework the three aspects of scheduling, namely, link adaptation, flexibility and a mature traffic characterization model. This design represents a complete solution for wireless resource management. © 2002 IEEE.
