In modern resource management systems for supercomputers and HPC-clusters the job-scheduler plays a major role in improving the performance and usability of the system. The performance of the used scheduling policies (e.g. FCFS, SJF, LJF) depends on the characteristics of the queued jobs. Hence we developed the dynP scheduler family. The basic idea was to change between different scheduling policies during runtime. The basic dynP scheduler uses the average estimated runtime of all queued jobs together with two input parameters to decide when a policy change may be benefical. A disadvantage is that the performance of the basic dynP scheduler strongly depends on the right setting of the two input parameters. Therefore we present the self-tuning dynP scheduler, which is totally independent from any parameter values. The basic concept is that the self-tuning dynP scheduler computes the full (virtual) schedule for each of the three policies in every scheduling step. Each computed schedule is rated by a criterion. Then the scheduler switches to that policy which generated the best schedule for the currently queued jobs. In this paper we are using simulations with trace based job sets to evaluate the performance of the scheduler. The achieved results are reasonably good compared to the parameterized dynP variant and the basic policies FCFS, SJF, and LJF. © 2002 IEEE.

In RED-Linux kernel, a General scheduling Framework (GSF) has been implemented. Under GSF, different scheduling algorithms can be easily implemented. However GSF only addresses the scheduling of CPU. Other system resources are not considered. In this paper we propose a general resource management framework for various OS resources. When user applications request and consume system resources, they may use uniform APIs although each type of OS resource has its own properties and means to be controlled. In the resource management framework, we also allow the inter-relationship between different types of resources to be defined and managed.

In the past two decades, numerous scheduling and load balancing techniques have been proposed for locally distributed multiprocessor systems. However they all suffer from significant deficiencies when extended to a Grid environment: some use a centralized approach that renders the algorithm unscalable, while others assume the overhead involved in searching for appropriate resources to be negligible. Furthermore, classical scheduling algorithms do not consider a Grid node to be N-resource rich and merely work towards maximizing the utilization of one of the resources. In this paper, we propose a new scheduling and load balancing algorithm for a generalized Grid model of N-resource nodes that not only takes into account the node and network heterogeneity, but also considers the overhead involved in coordinating among the nodes. Our algorithm is decentralized, scalable, and overlaps the node coordination time with that of the actual processing of ready jobs, thus saving valuable clock cycles needed for making decisions. The proposed algorithm is studied by conducting simulations using the Message Passing Interface (MPI) paradigm.

We present a novel and comprehensive resource management solution for the autonomous hot-spot convergence system (AHSCS) that uses sensor web. This solution is in response to a call for solution at the WPDRTS 2002. The proposed solution involves system analysis and design and developing a new resource management methodology, which we call Feedback-based Adaptive resource management (FARM). The FARM methodology combines the advantages of feedback control scheduling, path-based scheduling, value-based scheduling, and survivability strategies to provide dependable (predictable, reliable, and secure) services to the AHSCS.

Cluster application management plays an important role in cluster systems. With more and more applications being settled on clusters, application management faces more and more challenging requirements. This paper introduces a service-based cluster application management system called AppManager. Different from traditional job management systems, AppManager has a service-based architecture. The components of a job management system are modularized and encapsulated into services. All these services are accessible within a cluster or outsides over Internet. Besides the basic functions of a traditional application management system, such as resource management, application schedule and control, AppManager implements many excellent features including supporting a wide variety of application types, platform flexibility, high system scalability, high availability assurance for application, scheduling algorithm extensibility and so on.

This paper examines the issue of dynamically scheduling applications on a wide-area network computing system. We construct a simulation model for wide-area task allocation problem and study the performance of the proposed algorithm under different conditions. The simulation results indicate that the wide-area scheduling algorithm is sensitive to several parameters including machine failure rates, the local queuing policies, and arrival rates.

The emerging distributed applications require end-to-end support for various quality-of-service (QoS) aspects, including bandwidth, latency, jitter, and dependability. The Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) is an open distributed object computing infrastructure, standardized by the Object management Group (OMG). Its goal is to minimize the effort required to develop high-quality systems by composing applications using reusable software components. However, CORBA is not sufficient to provide QoS guarantees in a distributed environment as it lacks capabilities to specify and enforce QoS constraints. For enforcing these constraints, OMG came up with Real-Time CORBA (RTCORBA) specification that can guarantee end-to-end predictability in a complex realtime system. Currently, RTCORBA specification addresses the location transparency, but does not address the resource monitoring and management issues critical for meeting the QoS constraints in a multi-server distributed processing environment. In this paper, we identify the functionalities that are required to ensure predictability in such an environment and propose a resource management framework for RTCORBA. We present its design, a prototype implementation using ORBit ORB, and an example to illustrate its use.

This paper presents a novel wireless scheduling mechanism, called Adaptive Service Curve (ASC). The proposed mechanism increases the flexibility with which network operators can adjust the allocation of resources. A good scheduler should exhibit three kinds of flexibility. First, ASC should be able to differentiate the error resilience requirements due to the impact of location-dependent channel errors in wireless networks. Specifically, ASC can employ link adaptation, enabling a choice to be made between maximizing system throughput and making more link effort on error-prone channels. Second, the above flexibility is not system-wide. Rather users can subscribe to different error resilience policies. ASC utilizes the service curve model that can best meet QoS requirements to provide the third kind of flexibility, and prevents an unacceptable over-allocation of radio resources. Accordingly, a framework is proposed to make the existing service curve model operate effectively in wireless environments. The ASC scheduler combines in a single-framework the three aspects of scheduling, namely, link adaptation, flexibility and a mature traffic characterization model. This design represents a complete solution for wireless resource management.
