In this paper, we present the Buffer Sensitive Rate-Based (BSRB) algorithm, which provides a fair scheduling scheme to serve video playback requests, while maximizing the performance of individual playback. In BSRB, the amount of bandwidth allocated to serve a video request depends on the buffer level of the requesting client, and the expected and minimum bandwidth requirements of the video. By maintaining a high video buffer level at a client, the quality of the playbacks can be maintained and its performance will be more adaptive to the changing playback conditions. By employing the rate-based policy in BSRB, the performance of the requests is less affected by the poor performance of a single client and hence fair services can be provided to the clients.

This paper investigates the problem of scheduling a set of independent tasks with multiple QoS needs, which may include timeliness, reliability, security, data accuracy, and priority, in a heterogeneous computing system. This problem is referred to as the QoS-based scheduling problem and proven to be NP-hard. In order to solve the QoS-based scheduling problem, a computationally efficient static scheduling algorithm (QSMTS_IP) is developed. The simulation studies carried out show that QSMTS_IP is capable of meeting diverse QoS requirements of marry users simultaneously, while minimizing the number of users whose tasks cannot be scheduled due to the scarcity of resources.

Developers of mission-critical distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems face a fundamental tension between: (1) the performance gains achievable with hand-crafted optimizations to systems built largely from scratch and (2) the development cost and cycle-time reductions offered by common off-the-shelf (COTS) middleware. The paper describes how the Kokyu portable middleware scheduling framework, which is built using standards-based COTS middleware and OS primitives, can be used both to: (1) maintain the flexibility and reuse offered by COTS middleware, and (2) provide opportunities for domain-specific optimizations that are needed to meet stringent real-time performance requirements.

The real-time scheduling advisor (RTSA) is an entirely user-level system that an application running on a typical shared, unreserved distributed computing environment can turn to for advice on how to schedule its compute-bound soft real-time tasks. Given a list of hosts, a description of the CPU demands of the task, the deadline, and a confidence level, the RTSA will recommend one of the hosts and predict, as a confidence interval, the running time of the task on that host. The RTSA is based on a scalable and extensible shared resource prediction system based on statistical time series analysis. The author first describes how the RTSA builds on this underlying system to provide its service, and then he evaluates its performance using a randomized methodology based on real background workloads, determining the effect of different factors. He also compares it with a random approach and a measurement-based approach.

In modern resource management systems for supercomputers and HPC-clusters the job-scheduler plays a major role in improving the performance and usability of the system. The performance of the used scheduling policies (e.g. FCFS, SJF, LJF) depends on the characteristics of the queued jobs. Hence we developed the dynP scheduler family. The basic idea was to change between different scheduling policies during runtime. The basic dynP scheduler uses the average estimated runtime of all queued jobs together with two input parameters to decide when a policy change may be benefical. A disadvantage is that the performance of the basic dynP scheduler strongly depends on the right setting of the two input parameters. Therefore we present the self-tuning dynP scheduler, which is totally independent from any parameter values. The basic concept is that the self-tuning dynP scheduler computes the full (virtual) schedule for each of the three policies in every scheduling step. Each computed schedule is rated by a criterion. Then the scheduler switches to that policy which generated the best schedule for the currently queued jobs. In this paper we are using simulations with trace based job sets to evaluate the performance of the scheduler. The achieved results are reasonably good compared to the parameterized dynP variant and the basic policies FCFS, SJF, and LJF

This paper introduces a resource management infrastructure for grid computing environments. The technique couples application performance prediction with a hierarchical multi-agent system. An initial system implementation utilises the performance prediction capabilities of the PACE toolkit to provide quantitative data regarding the performance of complex applications running on local grid resources. The validation results show that a high level of accuracy can be obtained, that cross-platform comparisons can be easily undertaken, and that the estimates can be evaluated rapidly. A hierarchy of homogeneous agents are used to provide a scalable and adaptable abstraction of the grid system architecture. An agent is a representative of a local grid resource and is considered to be both a service provider and a service requestor. Agents are organised into a hierarchy and cooperate to provide service advertisement and discovery. A performance monitor and advisor has been developed to optimise the performance of the agent system. A case study with corresponding experimental results are included to demonstrate the efficiency of the resource management and scheduling system.

Content replication and distribution is an effective technology to reduce the response time for Web accesses and has been proven quite popular among large Internet content providers. However, existing content distribution systems assume a store-and-forward delivery model and is mostly based on static content. This paper describes the design, implementation, and initial evaluation of a network resource management system for real-time Internet content distribution called Sago, which provides facilities to provision and allocate network resources so that multiple bandwidth-guaranteed and fault-tolerant multicast connections can be multiplexed on a single physical network. Sago includes a novel network resource mapping algorithm that takes into account both physical network topology and dynamic traffic demands, a network-wide fault tolerance mechanism that supports both node-level and link-level fault tolerance, and a hierarchical network link scheduler that provides performance protection among multicast connections sharing the same physical network link. Moreover, Sago does not require any IP multicasting support from underlying network routers because it performs application-level multicasting. The technologies underlying Sago are important building blocks for real-time content distribution networks, end-to-end quality of service guarantee over global corporate intranets, and application-specific adaptation of wide-area network services.

Running a large-scale distributed simulation may need a large amount of computing resources at geographically different locations. These resources may be from different organizations. The simulation may run for a long period of time and the availability and amount of computing resources available may change during the course of simulation execution. Therefore, coordinating and managing resources for distributed simulation to complete the simulation efficiently and effectively is a critical issue. This paper describes a load management system for HLA-based distributed simulation. The system is constructed on top of a grid computing environment supported by Globus. The overall structure of the system is presented in the paper and how the system saves and restores a federate is also discussed in detail.

In recent years, a number of sophisticated architectures have been proposed to provide VoD service using multicast transmissions. Compared to their unicast counterparts, these multicast VoD systems are highly scalable and can potentially serve millions of concurrent users. Nevertheless, these systems are designed for streaming constant-bit-rate (CBR) encoded videos and thus cannot benefit from the improved visual quality obtainable from variable-bit-rate (VBR) encoding techniques. To tackle this challenge, this paper presents a novel Slice-and-Patch (S&P) algorithm to support VBR video streaming in a multicast VoD system. Extensive trace-driven simulations are conducted to compare performance of the S&P algorithm with two other algorithms based on priority scheduling. Results show that the S&P algorithm outperforms the other two priority scheduling algorithms for most videos. Compared to the CBR counterpart serving videos of the same average bitrate, the S&P algorithm is able to support VBR video streaming with only 50% increase in latency. Given that VBR-encoded video can achieve visual quality comparable to CBR-encoded video at half the bitrate, this S&P algorithm can potentially achieve performance comparable to CBR-based systems when combined with VBR encoding techniques.

The SVG (Superordenador Virtual Galego) is a system developed for the dynamic integration of computationally heterogeneous and geographically distributed nodes connected to the main Galician communications network (RECETGA), so that they can be taken as a single virtual supercomputer. The SVG manages the distribution of jobs among the systems that offer resources, as well as the migration of tasks whenever a computer becomes unavailable or overloaded with local processes. It also keeps track of the global execution of all the tasks it is assigned ensuring at all times that the resources taken up do not compromise the local usage of the shared machines. We describe briefly the SVG architecture and we discuss the implementation of the scheduling scheme designed for managing distributed resources in this platform. We also present encouraging results of a real application running on the SVG.
