The ease of programming and compiling for the shared memory multiprocessor model, coupled with the scalability and cost advantages of distributed memory computers, give an obvious appeal to distributed shared memory architectures. In this paper we discuss the design and implementation issues of a dynamic data management and scheduling environment for distributed shared memory architectures. In contrast to the predominantly static approaches used on distributed and message passing machines, we advocate the advantages of dynamic resource allocation, especially in the case of multi-user environments. We propose hybrid data and work distribution techniques that adjust to variations in the physical partition and achieve better load balance than purely static schemes. We present the architecture of our execution environment and discuss implementation details of some of the critical components. Preliminary results using benchmarks of representative execution profiles support our main thesis: With minimal control, the load balancing and resource utilization advantages offered by dynamic methods often outweigh the disadvantage of increased memory latency stemming from slightly compromised data locality, and perhaps additional run-time overhead. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1995.

When scheduling realtime parallel tasks onto multiprocessor systems, it is very important to optimize the computing resource allocations to those tasks using load-distribution mechanisms. This paper proposes a static load-distribution mechanism, called the Double-Layered Load-Distribution (DLLD) mechanism, which schedules hard realtime parallel computing tasks. Due to the nature of the hard realtime computation, the deadlines of task executions must be previously analysed and perfectly satisfied. For this reason, static load-distribution schemes are preferred to dynamic ones. In order to optimize the scheduling results with respect to various types of parallel computing tasks and various architectures of parallel-processor hardware, the DLLD mechanism is comprised of two functional layers: the DF/IHS scheduler (the upper layer) and the DPSTS (the lower layer).

Most studies of resource management in multiprogrammed parallel systems have ignored the I/O performed by applications. Recent studies have demonstrated that significant I/O operations are performed by a number of different classes of parallel applications. This paper focuses on some basic issues that underlie I/O management and system performance in multiprogrammed parallel environments that run applications with I/O. Characterization of the I/O behavior of parallel applications is discussed first followed by an investigation of three different I/O management strategies. Based on simulation models this research demonstrates a strong relationship among I/O characteristics of applications, I/O management strategies, and system performance. For example, using CPU-I/O overlap in applications and I/O management strategies that incorporate data replication are found to be beneficial for a variety of different multi-programmed parallel environments.

Recent advances in the analysis of distributed realtime systems have made it possible to predict if hard realtime requirements will be met. However, it is still difficult to find a feasible priority assignment when the utilization levels of the CPUs and communication networks are pushed near to their limits. This paper presents a new heuristic algorithm for optimizing the assignment of priorities to tasks and messages in distributed hard realtime systems. The algorithm is based on the knowledge of the parameters that influence the worst-case response time of a distributed application. This algorithm is compared to simulated annealing, which is a general optimization technique for discrete functions that had been previously used for solving similar problems. On average, our heuristic algorithm executes two orders of magnitude faster than simulated annealing, finds better solutions, and finds solutions in cases where the latter method fails.< >

We develop some stochastic lower and upper bounds for parallel program execution times when there are limited processors. Such analysis can provide important information for job scheduling and resource allocation. For several typical classes of parallel programs, we derive very accurate closed form approximations for the bounds. Examples are also given to demonstrate the quality of the bounds.

In this paper, we design and implement a prototypical heterogeneous distributed database system, named DIME (distributed Information management). DIME has the following salient properties. First, DIME allows both global retrieval operations and global update operations where different concurrency control schemes are used in different local database systems (LDBSs). Second, DIME implements international standard protocols on the distributed transaction processing and the remote database access. Last, DIME provides distribution transparency, and thus users can generate not only single site queries (including remote site queries) but also inter-site queries without considering data distribution in LDBSs.< >

Summary form only given. Time plays a fundamental role in real-time computer controlled systems, in which the system dynamics depend on the temporal behavior of controlling tasks. The temporal behavior of the tasks, in turn, is determined through the system level policies which are designed to execute the tasks in a timely manner by preserving the time constraints on their execution. We show that by maintaining multiple temporal views for resources and tasks, the behavior of system policies for resource management, scheduling, and fault tolerance can be explained in simple intuitive ways. The temporal views of resources and tasks are related to the notion of real-time, through the use of clock time. The concept is easily generalizable to distributed environments, wherein factors such as clock skew, communication times etc. must also be incorporated. We present examples to illustrate the concept and benefits of maintaining multiple temporal views in systems.< >

We investigate the problem of mapping dynamically generated tasks onto the processors of an MIMD-system. Our main concern is to construct an algorithm which can be integrated in distributed runtime systems like PVM or MPI. Existing methods are often not adjustable to different architecture- and application-demands. Even if they are, the adjustment has to be done manually via time-consuming experiments. A universally applicable strategy has to adjust its parameters automatically according to hardware- and application-characteristics. We concentrate on bidding-algorithms which check the load of K randomly selected processors before placing a task. The analysis of this method is based on a model which allows predicting the behavior of the scheduler. Especially for a large number n of processes it is possible to show that the scheduling behaviour becomes independent of n. As a result we derive optimal K-values for different classes of application/architecture-characteristics. Furthermore, we investigate values of K which guarantee certain execution-times of the application with a given probability.

Fast, efficient parallel algorithms are presented for discrete event simulations of dynamic channel assignment schemes for wireless cellular communication networks. The driving events are call arrivals and departures, in continuous time, to cells geographically distributed across the service area. A dynamic channel assignment scheme decides which call arrivals to accept, and which channels to allocate to the accepted calls, attempting to minimize call blocking while ensuring co-channel interference is tolerably low. Specifically, the scheme ensures that the same channel is used concurrently at different cells only if the pairwise distances between those cells are sufficiently large. Much of the complexity of the system comes from ensuring this separation. The network is modeled as a system of interacting continuous time automata, each corresponding to a cell. To simulate the model, we use conservative methods; i.e., methods in which no errors occur in the course of the simulation and so no rollback or relaxation is needed. Implemented on a 16 K processor MasPar MP-1, an elegant and simple technique provides speedups of about 15/spl times/ over an optimized serial simulation running on a high speed workstation. A drawback of this technique, typical of conservative methods, is that processor utilization is rather low. To overcome this, we developed new methods that exploit slackness in event dependencies over short intervals of time, thereby raising the utilization to above 50% and the speedup over the optimized serial code to about 120/spl times/ with respect to the workstation simulation.< >
