For systems executing a mixture of different dataintensive applications in parallel there is always the question about the impact that each application has on the storage subsystem. From the perspective of storage, I/O is typically anonymous as it does not contain user identifiers or similar information. This paper focuses on the analysis of performance data collected on shared system components like global file systems that can not be mapped back to user activities immediately. Our approach classifies user jobs based on their properties into classes and correlates these classes with global timelines. Within the paper we will show details of the clustering algorithm, depict our measurement environment and present first results. The results are valuable for tuning HPC storage system to achieve an optimized behavior on a global system level or to separate users into classes with different I/O demands.

Recent years witnessed an explosion in the number and variety of data crowdsourcing initiatives. From OpenStreetMap to Amazon Mechanical Turk, developers and practitioners have been striving to create userinterfaces able to effectively and efficiently support the creation, exploration, and analysis of crowdsourced information. The extensive usage of crowdsourcing techniques brings a major change of paradigm with respect to traditional user interface for data collection and exploration, as effectiveness, speed, and interaction quality concerns play a central role in supporting very demanding incentives, including monetary ones. The First internationalworkshop on userinterfaces for Crowdsourcing and Human Computation (CrowdUI 2014), co-located with the AVI 2014 conference, brought together researchers and practitioners from a wide range of areas interested in discussing the user interaction challenges posed by crowdsourcing systems.

data management is a critical component of high-performance computing, with storage as a cornerstone. Yet the traditional model of parallel file systems fails to meet users' needs, in terms of both performance and features. In this paper, we propose CoSS, a new storage model based on contracts. Contracts encapsulate in the same entity the data model (type, dimensions, units, etc.) and the intended uses of the data. They enable the storage system to work with much more knowledge about the input and output expected from an application and how it should be exposed to the user. This knowledge enables CoSS to optimize data formatting and placement to best fit user's requirements, storage space, and performance. This concept paper introduces the idea of contract-based storage systems and presents some of the opportunities it offers, in order to motivate further research in this direction.

The dramatic growth of the Web and the richness of dynamic userinterfaces have forced to adopt model driven paradigm in web application design process. However the need to better synchronize with customers has lead to consider new web application development through the use of frameworks such as mobile first app development platforms in which the development process is carried out following agile paradigm. For example in ORION or XDK mobile web frameworks the mobile first approach forces developer to adopt skeleton or templates in the design process. As consequence could be of interest to explore how mockups could be inserted at conceptual level in the design process. In a first work towards this direction (((McDonald and Welland, 2003)), it has been discussed how agile techniques and in particular mockup driven methodologies, could be introduced to refine user interface models and to generate in a semi-automatic way UML models. In this work we propose an agile approach to MDWE methodologies (called dataintensive Mockup-Driven Development, or DI-MockupDD) by introducing a mockup based dynamic data binding mechanism. As a result, we get an example of agile an prototype-based iterative process which is dataintensive.

Several aspects of secure operating systems have been analyzed and described as security patterns. However, existing patterns do not cover explicitly the secure interaction of users with the user interface of applications. Especially graphical userinterfaces tend to get complex and vulnerable to spoofing and eavesdropping, e.g., due to key loggers or fake dialog windows. A secure user interface system has to provide a trusted path between the user and the application the user intends to use. The trusted path must be able to ensure integrity and confidentiality of the transmitted data, and must allow for the verification of the authenticity of the end points. We present a pattern for secure graphical user interface systems and evaluate its use in different implementations. This pattern shows how to fulfill the security requirements of a trusted path while preserving, in a policy-driven way, the flexibility that graphical userinterfaces generally demand.

Flexibility and customizability are central to the perceived advantages of the growth in technological powers. However, these and other vectors of technological change, when used clumsily, create new burdens and complexities for beleaguered human practitioners responsible for achieving goals within some field of activity. 'Intelligent interfaces' are sometimes seen as solutions to the growing demands of highly technological and highly automated fields of activity. However, data from a variety of sources indicates that an exclusively technology-driven approach to the development of intelligent interfaces is likely to provide the illusion of assistance while creating a new layer of burdens and complexities. It is necessary to understand the difference between two types of flexibility in cognitive artifacts: (a) flexibilities that increase practitioners' ranges of adaptive responses to the variability in the field of activity, and (b) flexibilities that simply create new burdens on practitioners, especially at high tempos or high criticality periods.

A Dual Interactive Information Retrieval (DIIR) system takes into account not only relevance of documents, but also possible effects of the retrieved documents on user feedback when deciding which documents should be retrieved thus optimizing the search session. Such optimization can improve quality of information retrieval, especially under uncertainty and long information search. Since these methods assume availability of a feedback, organization of the documents in topics and iterative information search process, then new userinterfaces need to be developed for possibility of use of the new methods. A user interface for DIIR system is proposed in the paper, after a description of DIIR.
