In this paper we describe web-based distributed system suitable for acceleration of fault simulation in digital circuits. Framework has three-tier client server concept. Java applets are used for userinterfaces. Java servlet on master server supports communication, task partitioning, user tracking, data management, etc. HTTP protocol based solution is used, since it is well established and flexible in firewall-protected environments. Reuse of existing test tools by encapsulation into Java agents extends the lifecycle and value of these tools. Considerable fault simulation speedup was gained in experiments. Two types of fault set partitioning were tried: adjacent fault selection and random fault selection. The latter is able to ensure more equal execution times for subtasks and therefore contributes to overall shorter parallel simulation time.

This paper demonstrates the results of workshop "UX Skillrow Evaluation" workshop, promoted by the Laboratory of Ergonomics and Design (LED) of the University of Florence in collaboration with Technogym, a leading-edge company that develops fitness equipment for any physical activity. The workshop aimed to define the current levels of usability and experience of use of rowing "Skillrow", through method of investigation and practice of Human-Centered Design and user Experience approaches. The predominant aim of work was to identify usability and user experience of rowing Skillrow and its userinterfaces. Following this, to identify the potential, project proposals were conducted, brainstorming and focus group activities. During testing twenty-one users participated, aged between 22 and 30. The research goals were: measurements of current usability level and user experience of product-system interfaces, and definition of critical issues and implementation of the current userinterfaces. Finally, the results from the evaluation phases allowed to get qualitative data on the levels of effective usability of the product, the components and its graphic interface. In the form of scenario-based design, solutions to improve the current high levels of usability of the user interface were also developed.

Usability, effectiveness, and efficiency are the fundamental properties of content-based multimedia exploration systems. While the usability of an exploration system is frequently ensured by intuitive and interactive visual interfaces, the effectiveness of the retrieval results and the efficiency of the exploration process are typically obtained by high quality similarity models and fast query evaluation strategies. As it is immensely important to maintain all the aforementioned properties concurrently in order to meet individual user requirements, we present a modular content-based multimedia exploration system facilitating the access and insight into large multimedia databases by incorporating state-of-the-art content-based methods and techniques. To this end, we first survey and analyze various techniques and then briefly introduce our modular content-based exploration system.

As the issue of data overload is a problem in critical care today, it is of utmost importance to improve acquisition, storage, integration, and presentation of medical data, which appears only feasible with the help of bedside computers. The data originates from four major sources: (1) the bedside medical devices, (2) the local area network (LAN) of the ICU, (3) the hospital information system (HIS) and (4) manual input. All sources differ markedly in quality and quantity of data and in the demands of the interfaces between source of data and patient database. The demands for data acquisition from bedside medical devices, ICU-LAN and HIS concentrate on technical problems, such as computational power, storage capacity, real-time processing, interfacing with different devices and networks and the unmistakable assignment of data to the individual patient. The main problem of manual data acquisition is the definition and configuration of the user interface that must allow the inexperienced user to interact with the computer intuitively. Emphasis must be put on the construction of a pleasant, logical and easy-to-handle graphical user interface (GUI). Short response times will require high graphical processing capacity. Moreover, high computational resources are necessary in the future for additional interfacing devices such as speech recognition and 3D-GUI. Therefore, in an ICU environment the demands for computational power are enormous. These problems are complicated by the urgent need for friendly and easy-to-handle userinterfaces. Both facts place ICU bedside computing at the vanguard of present and future workstation development leaving no room for solutions based on traditional concepts of personal computers. For a truely paperless documentation a new integrated computational paradigm has to be developed that might required a new dimension of computational and graphical power at the bedside.

End-users information capture remains a sensitive challenge, especially when information is under the form of documents. The difficulty concerns information indexing so that information can be precisely queried In the DRUID project, the end-user captures XML paragraph-centric documents (i.e. documents with tags delimiting narrative text paragraphs), and a transformation tool generates XML data-centric documents that can be stored in a database. The database can then be queried to retrieve documents. data-centric and paragraph-centric documents conform to DTDs. In this article, we present algorithms to automatically generate DTDs from the database schema.

The continuing advancement of technological development will require submarine control rooms of the future to process greater volumes of data from next-generation sensors. The requirements placed upon future submarine control rooms might necessitate changes to their ways of working to maintain effective performance. The Command Team Experimental Test-Bed (ComTET) is a project that aims to evaluate future ways of working through systematic, repeatable, and statistically robust experimentation. As part of the ComTET program, novel userinterfaces (UI) are being designed and evaluated. The design process utilised for the development of the novel UIs was the Google Ventures design sprint methodology, with the aim of leveraging expert participants experience and recommendations to inform future interface design requirements and novel concepts. The current work describes a three-day workshop that was held to design these interfaces and presents the resultant prototype designs.

One of the aims of the research in the field of the human computer interaction is the design of a natural and intuitive interaction modalities. In particular many, efforts have been devoted in the development of systems able to interact with the user in natural language. Chatbots are the classical interfaces for natural language interaction. Such systems can be very sophisticated, including support for 3D avatars and speech analysis and synthesis. However all of them present only a text area allowing the user to input her sentences. No doubt, an interaction involving also the natural language can increase the comfort of the userwith respect to common interfaces using only graphical widgets. However multi-modal communication must be preferred in all those situations when the user and the system have a tight interaction. Typical examples are cultural heritages applications (intelligent museum guides, picture browsing) or systems presenting to the user an information integrated from different sources as in the case of the iGoogle(TM) interface. In this work, we present the Graphical Artificial Intelligence Markup Language, an extension of AIML allowing merging of verbal and graphical interaction modalities. A chatbot system, Graphbot, is also presented that is able to support this language. The language is able to define personalized interface patterns that are the most suitable ones in relation to the type of data exchanged between the user and the system during the dialogue.

As the number of signals and data to be handled grows in intensive care unit, it is necessary to design more powerful computing systems that integrate and summarize all this information. The manual input of data as e.g. clinical signs and drug prescription and the synthetic representation of these data requires an ever more sophisticated user interface. The introduction of knowledge bases in the data management allows to conceive contextual interfaces. The objective of this paper is to show the importance of the design of the user interface, in the daily use of clinical information system. Then we describe a methodology that uses the man-machine interaction to capture the clinician knowledge during the clinical practice. The different steps are the audit of the user's actions, the elaboration of statistic models allowing the definition of new knowledge, and the validation that is performed before complete integration. A part of this knowledge can be used to improve the user interface. Finally, we describe the implementation of these concepts on a UNIX platform using OSF/MOTIF graphical interface.

The first step of most database design methodologies consists in eliciting part of the user requirements from various sources such as user interviews and corporate documents. These requirements formalize into a conceptual schema of the application domain, that has proved to be difficult to validate, especially since the visual representation of the ER model has shown understandability limitations from the end-users standpoint. In contrast, we claim that prototypical userinterfaces can be used as a two-way channel to efficiently express, capture and validate data requirements. Considering these interfaces as a possibly populated physical view on the database to be developed, reverse engineering techniques can be applied to derive their underlying conceptual schema. We present an interactive tool-supported approach to derive data requirements from userinterfaces. This approach, based on an intensiveuser involvement, addresses a significant subset of data requirements, especially when combined with other requirement elicitation techniques.
