In the design of mechatronic systems the predefined functionality is generally reached by a coupling of elements from mechanics, hydraulics, and electrical engineering, combined with information processing. This leads to complex and extremely heterogeneous systems based on the most diverse physical principles. One of the problems with the design of mechatronic systems is the variety of the models need to be studied. To solve it the present approach introduces two conceptions of object-orientation, namely inheritance and polymorphism, into the model description language Objective-DSS and make them available to the user. The resulting advantages are exemplified by an application in vehicle dynamics.

control system design problems are generally multiobjective, in that they require several, generally conflicting requirements to be simultaneously met. One procedure for multiobjective computer-aided control system design is the method of inequalities (MOI). In this paper, the MOI is combined with an H/sub /spl infin//-optimization loop-shaping design procedure in a mixed-optimization approach which designs for both robustness and explicit closed-loop performance. In this approach, the MOI is used to design the parameters of the weighting functions required by H/sub /spl infin//-optimization design techniques. This mixed-optimization approach has been incorporated into a MATLAB-based interactive multiobjective computer-aided control system design environment.

A fuzzy-neuro approach for the design of bang-bang controller is presented in this paper. The approach has been used with success for the time optimal bang-bang control of a heating system. The improved bang-bang controller suppresses the oscillations often observed at the output of an on-off controller. A fuzzy system is used for the implementation of the on-off control. An extension of the fuzzy control is provided by an equivalent neural network of the fuzzy system. A test application, that of a house heating with a two-state furnace, is developed and evaluated with standard hysteresis switching, fuzzy control, and fuzzy-neuro control.

This paper presents a set of realistic simulations conducted to demonstrate the applicability of the partial state reference model (PSRM) control approach to automotive control. Particular emphasis is put on those engineering design features as the tracking capability and the stability robustness and performances in the presence of state disturbance and modelling errors.

This paper deals with the implementation problems of a digital computer for a well designed linear continuous-time variable structure control system. An upper bound of the sampling period is given by some calculations. If the chosen sampling period is smaller than this upper bound the zero-order-hold of the VSS controller designed in a continuous-time system can still be used without any modification to stabilize its sampling data system. The so-called discrete-time weak-pseudo-sliding mode will take place along a prescribed sliding hyperplane. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the decision of the upper bound.

This paper addresses the problem of the global stabilization of some linear systems with constrained controls, subject to some disturbances, by means of a saturated control law. The perturbations are assumed a priori unknown but belonging to some domain. Firstly, for a fixed control law, the domain of admissible perturbations has to be determined in order to guarantee the global stability of the closed-loop system. Next, for a fixed domain of admissible perturbations the control law has to be determined. Further, from considered perturbations, both the conditions which allow to guarantee the global stabilization of the closed-loop system with eigenvalues assignment in a specified region are studied.

We discuss the numerical solution of the output feedback optimal periodic control problem by using a gradient search based optimization approach. For the evaluation of the cost function and its gradient explicit expressions are derived which involve the numerical solution of a pair of discrete-time periodic Lyapunov equations. Efficient numerically reliable algorithms based on the periodic Schur decomposition are proposed for the solution of these equations. The proposed algorithms are extensions of the methods proposed for standard systems. An example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the presented approach.

A protocol mismatch occurs when heterogeneous networks try to communicate with each other, and a protocol conversion mechanism is needed for proper communication. We present a systematic approach to protocol conversion using the recent theory of supervisory control of discrete event systems. We study the problem of designing a converter for a given mismatched pair of protocols, using their specifications, and the specifications for the channel and the user services. We introduce the notion of converter languages and use it to obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of protocol converter and present an effective algorithm for computing it whenever it exists.

This paper presents two nonlinear examples of mechanical systems. The first example is a simple inverted pendulum, the second example is a simplified bicycle model. In Maple, using the Euler Lagrange equations, we compute the equations of motion. We have shown how to use the interface to transfer the equations to Scilab for simulation or control. We have shown that for dealing with complex models, we need the full power of Maple to perform change of variables which cannot be automatized since they require a deep a priori knowledge of the model.

The solution complexity of a synthesized control model of an automated manufacturing system grows exponentially in the number of constituent components in the system (Ho, 1992), thus resulting in the control model being either theoretically untractable in computation (Ramadge, 1989) or practically unfeasible in implementation. By taking advantage of both Petri nets and supervisory control theory, this paper presents a new methodology, called deterministic finite capacity automaton, which when used to model the control of an automated manufacturing system can significantly reduce model complexity. By taking into account the nature of manufacturing automation and combining the technology advances in multiprocessing systems, an automaton-based control model capable of running coordinated computing processes is defined. An adjustable language is introduced into the control model, to make it function more efficiently.
