This paper deals with the application of H-infinity control for the design of an active suspension system. The involved vehicle is represented by a half-car model. A multivariable H-infinity control is developed to satisfy the performance/comfort objectives. Some simulation results on Epical ride conditions point out the relevance of the proposed methodology.

This paper addresses the problem of low-bias control for an active magnetic bearing (AMB). Using a complementarity flux condition, a simplified, three-dimensional model is used to describe the dynamics of this mode of operation. Recent results from the theory of saturating control are used to design a stabilizing controller. The saturation level is a free parameter that is chosen by the control engineer. Numerical simulations at the end of the paper show the effectiveness of the design method proposed.

This paper is concerned with a new auto-tuning method to aci:lust the parameters in the feedforward and feedback PI controllers for a motor drive system, according to identified physical parameters such as a motor time constant, viscous friction terms proportional to motor velocity and squared velocity, and Coulomb friction. These physical parameters can be obtained by specially setting up a suitable reference model and plug-in models in the simple adaptive control (SAC) algorithm. Digital implementation for the proposed adaptive algorithm is also presented, in which the relative degree problem is solved by a serial compensation scheme for a non-ASPR system. The effectiveness of the proposed auto-tuning algorithm is examined in experimental studies in velocity control of an AC synchronous servo motor. It is clarified that the proposed scheme can simultaneously give the perfect tracking to the reference output and the specified attenuation performance of the closed-loop system, even if the load mass largely changes uncertainly.

A general purpose computer aided control system design package called SIMART has been developed from the available control theory. Equipped with sound real-time and simulation capabilities, it is intended to serve as a control engineering framework as well as a learning basis for advanced control techniques. As a key feature, SIMART supports a structured approach to advanced control, which greatly simplifies each design step, swiftly leading to feasible controllers. SIMART has already been successfully used for a number of applications, both on industrial and laboratory plants. One of these applications, involving a flexible system, is reported at the end of the paper.

A hierarchical structure for the tasks of the electronic control units devoted to automotive engine control is proposed. The architecture, at its highest level of abstraction, is divided into three parts: the driver interpreter, the engine controller, and the actuator controller. The lower hierarchical structure of the actuator controller block is detailed and applied to the case of an equivalent single cylinder engine. The implementation of the proposed architecture is shown to be compliant with the function block approach of the proposed IEC 1499 international standard.

Robotic systems are well suited for decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) tasks in hazardous environments. Advanced semi-autonomous telerobotic solutions for D&D tasks go beyond simple video-based interaction and include virtual reality (VR) interfaces and flexible sensor integration. The capability of those systems range from real-time control tasks to graphical user interface components utilizing video and VR. This paper describes QRobot, a PC-based system for telerobotic D&D operations. The system integrates hardware interfacing, real-time joint level control, sensors, tool control, networking and task level programming as well as video and VR based operator interfaces. The system demonstrates that the personal computer (PC), a cost effective and widely used computing platform, is well suited to the integration of real-time control tasks and advanced user interfaces.

The wireless application protocol (WAP) supported by some new mobile phones makes it possible to deliver web-like applications over the wireless telephone network. In this work one such application is presented. The application gives access to several PID controller tuning methods using a mobile phone. The paper begins with a short introduction to WAP technology. Next the tuning methods included in the application are described as well as the software implementation. An example and conclusions finish the paper.

This paper describes a symbolic method for robust stability analysis of which the stability margin (k/sub M/) problem can be formulated by solving polynomial systems using symbolic computation. Once the solutions are found, the stability margin problem can be easily solved. For the complex k/sub M/ problem, no matter how many uncertainties, there is only one polynomial system which needs to be solved in order to find all singularities to determine whether the boundary of Horowitz template intercepts the origin or not. In addition, the corresponding polynomial systems can be transformed into several zero-dimensional polynomial systems which are considered as easy problems by many mathematicians and computer scientists. Therefore, we can compute exact the complex /spl mu/ efficiently by this method.

The modern control configurated vehicle (CCV) design technologies aims at taking simultaneously into account performances and maneuvrability requirements, and handling quality specifications. Therefore it is very important to provide the modern stability and control engineers with a tool which allows to determine the maximum allowable range of aircraft parameter variation according to handling quality requirements. In this paper some applications of the software ROBAN, developed at the Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali (CIRA), are illustrated. ROBAN has been developed to analyse stability and performances (in terms of eigenvalues location on the complex plane) of linear systems subject to uncertain parameters, and has been shown to be particularly useful to deal with the robustness problems which arise in the flight control field. In particular, after a description of the algorithm, the applications of ROBAN to analyse (a) Robustness in flight conditions, (b) Robustness against sensor failures, (c) Robustness with respect to PIO (pilot-induced oscillations) are discussed.

The current industrial design practice mainly foresees a static analysis and design of distributed piping systems while leaving the solution of problems arising from plant dynamic behaviour to designer experiences and/or to "ad-hoc" developed dynamic simulation models. In this paper, we describe a component oriented modelling approach used for developing a simulation tool (FluiDyS) that allows a rapid and easy dynamic modelling and control algorithm design of even highly complex distributed piping systems. This modelling approach consists in developing standard state-space mathematical models, suitably defined and associated to particular elementary "physical components" whose composition allows modelling of a generic distributed piping system. This approach guarantees great flexibility (an even highly complex model is developed by simply assembling its system components), scalability (the same system can be simulated at different detail levels) and modularity (each component can be easily varied both by changing the associated parameters and by substituting the component model with another of the same class). Two applications are also presented which show the good numerical/experimental agreement and proves the effectiveness of such a tool when dealing with combined process/control performance optimisation problems and control system design and tuning.
