Automated discovery of web services with desired functionality is an active research area because of its role in realising the envisioned advantages of the semantic web, such as functional reuse and automated composition. Existing approaches generally determine matches by inferring subsumption relationships between a request and a service specification, but may return poor results if service profiles are overspecified or provide only partial information. We present a two-staged consistency-based matchmaking approach where services that potentially match the request are identified in the first stage, these services are queried for concrete information, and finally this information is used to determine the *** evaluate our matchmaking scheme in the context of the Discovery II and Simple Composition scenario proposed by the SWS Challenge group. Preliminary evaluation shows that our approach is robust while handling overspecified profiles, does not return false positives, and is able to handle partial information in service and requirements specification. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.

It is important for stockjobbers to carry out customer segmentation and find out the high-valued customers. This article focuses on the main factors that act on customer lifecycle value (CLV) and customer potential contribution value (CPV). At the basis of analyzing some key factors which the stockjobbers largely depend on from the classical CLV model, a three-dimensional customer classification and CPV estimate model is put forward. This model is convinced of feasible and reasonable by an empirical study with factual data from one stockjobber. It solves out the problem of looking for quantitative approach to estimating customer's level of CPV.

This paper addresses the problem of detecting access to off-topic documents by exploiting user profiles. Existing methods usually store a few prototype off-topic documents as the profile and label their top nearest neighbors in the test set as suspects. This is based on the common assumption that nearby documents are from the same class. However, due to the inherent sparseness of high-dimensional space, a document and its nearest neighbors may not belong to the same class. To this end, we develop a hyperclique pattern based off-topic detection method for selecting which ones to label. Hyperclique patterns consider joint similarity among a set of objects instead of the traditional pairwise similarity. As a result, the objects from hypercliques are more reliable as seeds for classifying their neighbors. Indeed, our experimental results on real world document data favorably demonstrate the effectiveness of our technique over the existing methods in terms of detection precision.

With the system becoming more complex and workloads becoming more fluctuating, it is very hard for DBA to quickly analyze performance data and optimize the system, self optimization is a promising technique. A data mining based optimization scheme for the lock table in database systems is presented. After trained with performance data, a neural network become intelligent enough to predict system performance with newly provided configuration parameters and performance data. During system running, performance data is collected continuously for a rule engine, which chooses the proper parameter of the lock table for adjusting, the rule engine relies on the trained neural network to precisely provide the amount of adjustment. The selected parameter is adjusted accordingly. The scheme is implemented and tested with TPC-C workload, system throughput increases by about 16 percent. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.

This paper presents a mobile database sharing protocol to improve data availability in mobile environments. Long disconnection periods of mobile hosts could cause data inconsistency and blocking of mobile transactions. The proposed mobile database sharing protocol allows two conflict data caching modes to reduce the blocking of mobile transactions that access to shared data. Furthermore, data can be directly shared among mobile hosts that are being disconnected from the database servers. data consistency is ensured via the execution constraints and dependency among transactions.

web Communities (WCs) are emerging as business enablers in the electronic marketplace. As the size of the community becomes increasingly large, there is a tendency for some members of the community to use resources provided by the community without necessarily making any contribution. It is, therefore, necessary to determine members' contributions towards sustaining the community. In this paper, we present a formal framework to dynamically measure the interactivity of members, and indeed the interactivity level of the community. This formal foundation is necessary to eliminate ad hoc approaches that characterize existing solutions, and provide a sound foundation for this new research area. We design an efficient interactivity algorithm, and also implement a prototype of the system.

With expanding of query requirements, event-relative semantic has appeared for data stream applications. This paper builds a simple but effective event-driven data stream model EQM based on event semantics and features over data stream. Furthermore, some improved approaches over event detection and queries as well as relative efficiency evaluation are discussed. Experiments show that our approaches gain better performance than available data stream model and processing approaches as far as event-relative problem is concerned.

A web service architecture is described for bidirectional XML updating. The updating mechanism exploits the power of bidirectional transformation so that users can update remote XXIL data by editing a view on the local machine that is generated by a transformation of the XML data. This architecture consists of three tiers: data viewer clients, a bidirectional transformation engine, and content servers accessible through the Internet. Due to the use of standard web service technologies, the data viewer clients and content servers can be easily replaced with ones chosen by the user. Users can use this architecture to implement their own applications that exploit the power of bidirectional transformation without the burden of installing and maintaining a bidirectional language package.

With the development of event-driven applications, event stream processing has received more and more attentions in database community. However, little work has focused on the problem of data mining and similarity analysis among event streams. As the foundation for the data mining such as frequent or abnormal event pattern detection, efficient similarity search is desired to be first executed. In this paper, we attempt to take the first step into the similarity search in the context of vast event streams. We propose a simple but effective model to improve the efficiency of the similarity search. To avoid redundant pair-wise comparison, we adopt the definition of sharing extent to dramatically filter dissimilar event streams and speed up the calculation of similarity . Extensive simulated experiments have demonstrated that our model and algorithm can lead to higher efficiency when guaranteeing expected accuracy. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.

Ontologies are increasingly used in various applications (e.g., semantic interoperability, data integration). In particular, there is a trend in applying ontologies to improve results of search. Quality of ontology plays an important role in these applications. An important body of work exists in ontology quality assessment area. However, there is a lack of task- and scenario-based quality assessment methods. In this paper we propose a framework to assess fitness of ontology for use in ontology-based search. We define metrics for ontology fitness to particular search tasks and metrics for ontology capability to enhance recall and precision.
