As an important strategy for reducing access time, balancing overload, and obtaining high data availability, replication is widely used in distributed system such as data Grids. Currently grid researchers often consider replica placement problem from the view of whole systems, i.e, ignoring individual requirements. With the rapid growth of data Grid applications, fulfilling requirements of every request becomes a big challenge, especially in data Grids with massive data, multiple users and geographically distribution. We build up a ring-based data Grid model and define a QoS-guaranteed Replica management Problem. A QoS-guaranteed replica placement algorithm qGREP is proposed, which takes individual QoS requirement into account and achieves tradeoff between consistency cost and access efficiency. Also a ring-base electing algorithm VOSE is presented to solve update conflicting while minimizing propagating costs. Analysis and experiments show that the model and algorithm are feasible in complex data Grid environment and achieve good performance under different simulating conditions.

Spatial features are important properties with respect to data integration in many areas such as ocean observational information and environmental decision making. In order to address the needs of these applications, we have to represent and reason about the spatial relevance of various data sources. In the paper, we develop a qualitative spatial representation and reasoning framework to facilitate data retrieval and integration of spatial-related data from ocean observational systems, such as in situ observational stations in the Gulf of Mexico. In addition to adopt the state-of-the-art techniques to represent partonomic, distance, and topological relations, we develop a probability-based heuristic method to uniquely infer directional relations between indirectly connected points. The experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve the overall adjusted correct ratio of 87.7% by combining qualitative distance and directional relations. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.

Discovering temporal patterns from sequence data has been an important task of data mining in recent years. In this paper a novel temporal pattern, Intervention, is proposed to capture the partial ordering relations in parallel event sequences. It is demonstrated that Intervention is essentially a deviation of generalized Markov property holding in parallel event sequences. A measure to evaluate the degree of such deviation, Intervention Intensity, is suggested, which has an important mathematical property, non-symmetry. As a result, an algorithm called MIPES for mining interventions is proposed. The time complexity of MIPES is of O(m2) and is independent of data size, where m is the number of event types and is far smaller than the data size in practice. The experimental results show MIPES is applicable and scalable. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.

data mining on uncertain data stream has attracted a lot of attentions because of the widely existed imprecise data generated from a variety of streaming applications in recent years. The main challenge of mining uncertain data streams stems from the strict space and time requirements of processing arriving tuples in high-speed. When new tuples arrive, the number of the possible world instances will increase exponentially related to the volume of the data stream. As one of the most important mining task, how to devise clustering algorithms has been studied intensively on deterministic data streams, whereas the work on the uncertain data streams still remains rare. This paper proposes a novel solution for clustering on uncertain data streams in point probability model, where the existence of each tuple is uncertain. Detailed analysis and the thorough experimental reports both on synthetic and real data sets illustrate the advantages of our new method in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.

The purpose and characteristics of e-learning are different from other web applications. This paper uses an extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to explain the motivation, attitude and acceptance behind participants of e-learning. The factors that determine web quality include the external variables: system functionality, interface design, pedagogic and contents, as well as community.. Perceived enjoyment was also added to this model as a factor.. The empirical results indicated that the extended TAM explains the acceptability of on-line learning systems with high reliability, validity, and model fitness. All "beliefs" (user perceptions) - perceived usefulness, ease of use, and enjoyment - are good predictors of attitude and acceptance. Pedagogic, and content as well as community are important external factors that predict e-learning acceptance.

The selection and evaluation task of attributes is of great importance for knowledge-based systems. It is also a critical factor affecting systems' performance. By using the genetic operator as the searching approach and correlation-based heuristic strategy as the evaluating mechanism, this paper presents a GA-CFS method to select the optimal subset of attributes from a given case library. Based on the above, the classification performance is evaluated by employing the combination method of C4.5 algorithm with k-fold cross validation. The comparative experimental results indicate that the proposed method is capable of identifying the most related subset for classification and prediction with reducing the representation space of the attributes dramatically whilst hardly decreasing the classification precision.

Previous work for finding patterns only focuses on grouping objects under the same subset of dimensions. Thus, an important bio-interesting pattern, i.e. time-shifting, will be ignored during the analysis of time series gene expression data. In this paper, we propose a new definition of coherent cluster for time series gene expression data called ts-cluster. The proposed model allows (1) the expression profiles of genes in a cluster to be coherent on different subsets of dimensions, i.e. these genes follow a certain time-shifting relationship, and (2) relative expression magnitude is taken into consideration instead of absolute one, which can tolerate the negative impact induced by "noise". This work is missed by previous research, which facilitates the study of regulatory relationships between genes. A novel algorithm is also presented and implemented to mine all the significant ts-clusters. Results experimented on both synthetic and real datasets show the ts-cluster algorithm is able to efficiently detect a significant amount of clusters missed by previous model, and these clusters are potentially of high biological significance. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

When adopting Bayesian network (BN) to represent and infer probabilistic causalities among multidimensional variables, the size of the conditional probability table (CPT) associated with each variable is doomed to be large, and the causality inferences cannot be done for arbitrary evidences. In this paper, we first extend the general BN by augmenting parameters for describing causalities among classes instead of specific instances of multidimensional variables. In the extended BN, called CBN, the CPT of a variable includes the probability of each class given parent classes, while a classifier of each variable is associated to determine the class that the given evidence belongs to. Further, we give the method for approximate inferences of the CBN for arbitrary evidences. Preliminary experiments verify the feasibility of our methods. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.

As the deployment of web services increases in complex business application integration, it is becoming inevitable that several web services may have the same or similar functionalities each holds different Quality of Services(QoS). In this context, it is becoming a challenge for web services developers to select most pertinent services for their businesses. In this paper, we suggest a novel method so called Trust Model for selecting provider web services among several similar providers but with different QoS. Our Trust Model is a function of historically gathered and learned QoS values, references or feedbacks from other services and honesty degree of this service. Client web services satisfaction degree function was devised for checking the satisfaction degree when using our Trust Model. The proposed model is validated with initial result by comparing two cases: when using our Trust Model for selecting web services and when not using our Trust Model.

Since the proposition of Journal Impact Factor [1] in 1963, the classical citation-based ranking scheme has been a standard criterion to rank journals and conferences. However, the reference of a paper cannot list all relevant publications and the citation relationships are not always available especially when related to copyright problem. Besides, we cannot evaluate a newly published paper before it is cited by others. Therefore, we propose an alternative method, term-based evaluation scheme which can evaluate publications by terms they use. Then we can rank conferences, journals and scholars accordingly. We think this term-based ranking scheme can be used to evaluate innovation quality for conferences and scholars. To evaluate our scheme and to facilitate its application, we develop an innovation ranking system called IRank to rank conferences and authors in the field of database Systems. The performance of IRank demonstrates the effectiveness of our scheme. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.
