We propose a user model that explains the shape of the distribution of file sizes in local file systems and in the World Wide Web. We examine evidence from 562 file systems, 38 web clients and 6 web servers, and find that the model is a good description of these systems. These results cast doubt on the widespread view that the distribution of file sizes is long-tailed and that long-tailed distributions are the cause of self-similarity in the Internet.

Branch taken rate and transition rate have been proposed as metrics to characterize the branch predictability. However, these two metrics may misclassify branches with regular history patterns as hard-to-predict branches, causing an inaccurate and ambiguous view of branch predictability. This study uses autocorrelation to analyze the branch history patterns and presents a new metric Degree of Pattern Irregularity (DPI) for branch classification. The proposed metric is evaluated with different branch predictors, and the results show that DPI significantly improves the quality and the accuracy of branch classification over traditional taken rate and transition rate.

In order to achieve the unified measurement of the air velocity from subsonic to supersonic circumstance, an analytical method referred to as the equivalent acoustic source, which was only suitable for the analysis of supersonic air current before, is extended to the subsonic case. Systematic analysis demonstrates the essential difference of the air current property between subsonic and supersonic scenario. Finally, a unified measurement model of acoustic particle-velocity vector is introduced. It provides a mathematical basis for us to measure the transonic air velocity via the use of an acoustic particle-velocity sensor, i.e., acoustic vector-sensor.

Microservices architecture is becoming popular as many software organizations have the need to transform large complex systems into small-sized software units whose functions are separated by business capabilities. Microservices architecture is preferable since it promotes independence of software modification, maintenance, and deployment. However, anti-patterns or poor development patterns of microservices can decrease the software quality. Nonetheless, quality measurement of microservices design based on anti-patterns has not been found in existing research. Using the QMOOD method for quality model design, this paper proposes a microservices quality model based on 11 microservices antipatterns and ISO/IEC 25010 as a standard reference for quality attributes. Also, a microservices quality measurement tool called MSA Nose+ is developed to measure the quality of microservices applications. In an experiment to validate the proposed model, the result shows that the quality values obtained from the proposed model improve consistently with the refactorings that are applied to a microservice-based system. Thus, development teams can use the proposed model and quality measurements as part of the decision making on quality improvement and maintenance of microservices applications.
