Diabetes mellitus and obesity are becoming some of the most serious public health challenges in the world. To help researchers more quickly reveal the complex relationships existing between diabetes mellitus, obesity, and related diseases in the literature, and give them an inspiration to search the effective treatments for these diseases, we propose a novel model named as representative latent Dirichlet allocation topic model (RLDA). We conducted the representation learning model on more than 337,000 pieces of diabetes and obesity related literature published in the recent decade. Then, an explicit analysis of the final result using a series of visualization tools to discover meaningful relations among diabetes mellitus, obesity, and other diseases was performed. In order to show the credibility of our discoveries, we used clinical reports, such as Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes, which were not used in our training data, to verify our results. Fortunately, a sufficient number of the reports were direct matches. With the help of our model, we achieved satisfactory results for diabetes mellitus and obesity. For example, we discovered that 22 other diseases are closely related to diabetes mellitus, 10 with obesity and 8 with both. In addition, the tumor, adolescent/child, inflammation, and hypertension will be the hottest research topics relating to diabetes and obesity in the near future. We believe that the representational learning model we have built can help biomedical researchers direct the focus and adjust the direction of their work.

Urban planners and policy makers often rely on data visualization and spatial data mapping tools to perceive the overall urban trends. The accumulation of historical and real-time urban data from many government and private organizations provides the opportunity for an integrated visual analytic platform. Data management and retrieval for geospatial visualization, correlations, and analysis of multiple data dimensions over a map constitute some of the main challenges when dealing with the heterogeneity of urban data from a variety of sources. In this paper, spatiotemporal aggregation strategies and approaches to accelerate the retrieval of spatial data are presented. The methods are tested on visualizing multivariate urban datasets from two cities in Australia that are aggregated from heterogeneous federated urban data providers. The aggregated spatial or temporal features can be visualized as a choropleth heatmap or extrusion on map. Dynamic spatial window query in our visual analytics tool allows extraction of at geometry objects optimized through materialized views from a database. Given the robust and scalable orchestration of geometries retrieval, this enables urban planners to perform interactive and dynamic multidimensional visual exploration over a map. © 2015 ACM.

The Global Change Assessment Model (GCAM) is an integrated assessment tool for exploring consequences and responses to global change. However, the current iteration of GCAM relies on NetCDF file outputs which need to be output from the model and then exported for visualization and analysis purposes. Such a requirement limits the uptake of this modeling platform for analysts that may wish to explore future scenarios. In this work, we present a web-based geovisual analytics interface for GCAM. challenges of this work include enabling both domain expert and model experts to be able to functionally explore the model. We explore the use of various aggregation layers, coordinated views and how choices of icons can enhance the understanding of the underlying data. Our primary focus is on understanding the simulated impact of climate change on sectors of the global economy. To demonstrate our work, we present a case study which explores the potential impact that the China south-north water transportation project in the Yangtze River basin will have on projected water demands. © The Eurographics Association 2015.

Formal Concept analysis (FCA) is suitable for use within organisations at different levels of maturity in information management. It takes as input a bigraph, into which both structured and unstructured data can be readily transformed, and produces a multiple-inheritance type hierarchy suitable for formal knowledge representation. Accordingly, FCA has been widely applied in areas such as information retrieval, knowledge discovery and knowledge representation. The multipleinheritance hierarchy produced by FCA is a complete lattice which can be represented as a labelled, directed, acyclic graph (DAG). We adopt a visual analytic approach to FCA by combining computational analysis with interactive visualisation. Scaling FCA to the interactive analysis of large data sets poses two fundamental challenges: the time required to enumerate the vertices, arcs and labels of the lattice DAG;and the difficulty of meaningful and responsive user interaction with a large digraph. This paper briey describes three software prototypes which address aspects of these scalability challenges.

In recent years, enterprises and emergency response teams have started to use user-generated content to monitor crises, events and trends. Especially in critical situations, decision makers must, above all, quickly assess huge amounts of data. E?ective geographical visualization and aggregation of collected data is an important prerequisite to enable decision makers to infer the impact of a detected event on, for example, their supply chains and other physical establishments. However, in existing literature the aspect of geographical visualization of automatically analysed events is hardly addressed. In this paper, we propose to introduce hierarchical levels of detail, a concept from Geographic Information Systems, for the visualization of user-generated data describing a local event. We developed a tool which can improve the assessment of regional impacts by o?ering the possibility to browse and visualize results on layers aggregating data along individually defined hierarchical dimensions, e.g. geographical or political districts.

Mobile Mapping Systems (MMSs) have attracted considerable attention from the viewpoint of application to road management and maintenance. MMSs can help evaluate the condition of asphalt pavements. In a road space, it is essential to keep the road surface in good condition, without surface damage such as cracks and patches. Human inspection is still widely used for road management to detect such damage. However, manual surveys are time-consuming and not very effective. Therefore, the successful automation of surface damage surveys will help reduce the cost of detecting damage and provide more objective and standardized results for road management. Our previous study attempted to visualize surface normals for point clouds of asphalt pavements in both good and poor conditions. However, our visualization was unable to help us clearly discriminate between good and bad surface pavement conditions. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine and test a method that uses MMS to evaluate road conditions effectively. We try to evaluate surface conditions through colored point clouds assigned values of 8-bit RGB color components that map the values of the surface normal and the curvature in a point cloud. An experiment shows that our method generates point clouds that successfully enable us to distinguish between good and bad road surface conditions. Our result also indicates the importance of selecting optimal values for the radius of the point cloud in calculating curvature.

Cloud GIS based services, large scale DEM GIS datasets, and onboard mobile device graphic and sensor resources allow creation of a functional terrain viewshed least observed path (LOP) geovisualization mobile application. The LOP application enables a mobile device user to visualize the best path to travel, from their current location to a point visible through their device's camera, minimizing the possibility of being seen from one or more application identified observer points. The application consumes cloud generated terrain viewsheds, for the identified observer points, combines the viewsheds locally and constructs an augmented reality color scaled geolayer. The application's dashboard viewer overlays the generated geolayer on the devices live camera feed to provide the LOP view. The LOP view updates as the mobile user's location changes and traverses observer point viewsheds. The LOP Android application implemented several critical technical decisions. Sensor orchestration algorithms manage GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope and device orientation input to synchronize the LOP geolayer with the live camera feed. Key system elements supporting the application include services and data hosted by a cloud GIS. Utilizing cloud based services significantly reduces computational times to perform viewshed terrain analysis for identified observer points. The cloud also provides large scale storage of DEM datasets providing a geospatially wide operational domain. Field tests of the LOP application utilized SRTM 3 arc-second, ASTER GDEM 1 arc-second, NED 1/3 and 1/9 arc-second, and 1 meter lidar first return. Initial performance results indicate DEM data source resolution has negligible impact on computational processing times on the cloud and mobile platforms but LOP results vary based on DEM data sources in urban landscape The LOP results and user experience can be improved by considering nearest neighbor results when calculating the LOP geolayer.

Despite the plethora of data-acquisition programs collecting remotely sensed high-resolution imagery in the United States, few corresponding high-resolution statewide land-cover datasets have been developed. This is understandable given the challenges inherent in extracting information from massive, highly-variable datasets encompassing heterogeneous landscapes. To overcome these challenges during development of a statewide, high-resolution tree-canopy dataset for Maryland, USA, we designed and deployed a rule-based expert system for mapping land-cover features from multispectral imagery and LiDAR. This object-based approach facilitated integration of imagery and LiDAR into a single classification workflow, exploiting the spectral, height, spatial information contained in the datasets. Rule-based expert systems provided an intelligent approach to feature extraction, ensuring consistency in the output despite variability in collection parameters, data quality, and data completeness, among others. Finally, by distributing the processing load to multiple computing cores, we efficiently extracted land cover from remotely-sensed datasets constituting terrabytes of digital data, covering the entirety of Maryland's 25,640 km2 (9,900 mi2) land area. We conclude that an object-based approach that incorporates expert systems and enterprise processing is a cost-effective method for statewide land-cover mapping.

Borderland regions are special areas and deserve more attention in global sustainable development. Reliable information and effective analysis tools are requested to support borderlands studies through the integrated utilization of geospatial analysis, web service, as well as the other domain-specific expertise. This paper has reviewed the state-of-the-art of borderlands modelling and understanding. From the perspective of geospatial information sciences (GIS), integrated data modelling, comprehensive analysis and collaborative information service are identified as the three major challenges in this filed. A research agenda is further proposed with four topics, i.e., classification and representation of borderland information, derivation of neighborhood information, development of synergetic analysis, and design and development of a geo-portal for borderlands studies. This interdisciplinary study requires a closer and in-depth collaboration of geopolitics, international relation, geography and geo-spatial information sciences.

With a growing number of vehicles on the roads, traffic problems remain ever present. These problems become especially severe during winter. In this paper, we discuss the first steps for creating a system to manage snow removal in the city of Sapporo. Several questions are raised about the required functionality of such a system and the inherent challenges. We explain how, by designing an explorative framework with the use of the Webble World and a set of custom-made mapping Webbles, we plan to meet these challenges. We discuss how social media can serve as an additional source of information about the city. A way of analyzing the data through dynamic queries is introduced. Finally, to demonstrate the use of our framework, we construct a digital dashboard for data visualization and analysis. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.
