Migrating monolithic software systems into microservices requires the application of decomposition techniques to find and select appropriate service boundaries. These techniques are often based on domain knowledge, static code analysis, and non-functional requirements such as maintainability. In this paper, we present our experience with an approach that extends static analysis with dynamic analysis of a legacy software system's runtime behavior, including the live trace visualization to support the decomposition into microservices. Overall, our approach combines established analysis techniques for microservice decomposition, such as the bounded context pattern of domain-driven design, and enriches the collected information via dynamic software visualization to identify appropriate microservice boundaries. In collaboration with the German IT service provider adesso SE, we applied our approach to their real-word, legacy lottery application in|FOCUS to identify good microservice decompositions for this layered monolithic Enterprise Java system.

Huge amount of techniques for creating, maintaining and/or recovering traceability among software development artifacts have been proposed. It is thus not easy for a potential user of such techniques to choose a technique suitable for his/her project because too many techniques exist and projects are different from each other. In this paper, we proposed a model for characterizing a traceability technique with respect to its users. The model can become a meta-model of the knowledge base for such users. The model is designed on the basis of the contents of existing technical papers so that we can easily describe model instances on the basis of technical papers. The model is represented in a feature model, and it has four mandatory features: source, destination, consequence and process. The user can at least understand a technique is unsuitable for him/her by referring such features. If a technique estimates the traceability relationships, the instance of its feature model may contain the quality metrics of its estimation such as precision and recall. It has also several optional features: assumptions, preprocess and tool. Although we sometimes cannot obtain such optional features from technical papers, they are so helpful for a user to decide a technique suitable for him/her. On the basis of the feature model, we described model instances of several techniques in technical papers. We also examined and discussed who the suitable user for each technique is. Online service systems have become increasingly popular. During operation of an online service system, incidents (unplanned interruptions or outages of the service) are inevitable. As an initial step of incident management, it is important to be able to automatically assign an incident report to a suitable team. We call this step incident triage, which can significantly affect the efficiency and accuracy of overall incident management. To better understand the incident-triage practice in industry, we perform an empirical study of incident triage on 20 large-scale online service systems in Microsoft. We find that incorrect assignment of incident reports occurs frequently and incurs unnecessary cost, especially for the incidents with high severity. For example, about 4.11% to 91.58% of incident reports are reassigned at least once and the average increment in incident-triage time caused by the reassignments is up to 10.16X. Considering the similarity between bug triage (automatically assigning bug reports to software developers) and incident triage, we then explore the applicability of typical bug-triage techniques to incident triage for online service systems. The results demonstrate that these bug-triage techniques are able to correctly assign incident reports to a certain extent, but still need to be further improved, especially for the incident reports that are assigned incorrectly at the first time. We further discuss possible ways to improve the accuracy of incident triage based on the empirical study. To our best knowledge, we are the first to investigate incident triage in industrial practice. Our results are useful for both practitioners and researchers to develop methods and tools to improve the current incident-triage practice for online service systems.

The paper presents an efficient approach to the semantic enrichment of measured sensor data in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), by bridging techniques from Model-driven software Development (MDSD) and Semantic Web Technology (SWT). Our approach reinforces data interoperability, fostering data sharing and reuse, by utilizing SWT. Model-based and type-agnostic configuration reduces the overall effort for WSN setup and maintenance, which are traditionally complex and time-consuming tasks. The presented approach addresses the problem of large-scale WSN management through the application of SWT in WSN configuration and management without requiring expert knowledge. Additionally, we present a generic architecture and an implementation which is also supplemented by hands-on descriptions of an illustrative use case. Our experimental results demonstrate that our model-based approach provides non-intrusive semantic enrichment with sub-millisecond computational overhead, as well as partially automated configuration of WSNs.

Requirement engineering education shows itself as relevant when considering its possible benefits to the training of students of Computer Science courses, such as software engineering, Computer engineering, Information Systems and Computer Science. In the literature, many challenges that come from the process of Requirements engineering in the industry are described. Regarding the academic environment, the initial training of Requirements Engineers still happens in the undergraduate programs and many challenges may happen in this context. Considering that context, this paper presents how the discipline of Requirements engineering is taught in undergraduate courses on the Computer Science area in Brazil, from the perspective of the lecturers. The research shows the teaching methodologies, the evolution of the discipline over the years, the forums used and the challenges faced by lecturers when teaching requirements documentation. based on that purpose, a survey with open questions was conducted with lecturers from different institutions. The results showed the similarity in the way the discipline is taught, challenges common to the lecturers, their desire for studies to diversify teaching methodologies, and the creation of exercises and more efficient context simulations. Besides that, it is listed different methodologies used by lecturers to mitigate the challenges and problems faced, as well as research sources for subjects related to Requirements engineering that can support the planning and teaching-learning processes of the discipline, according to the experience of those lecturers.

Technology is increasingly playing a part in defence and military decision-making, and this must be reflected in how defence, government and military train with such systems. Even beyond the traditional mechanisms that are considered cyber, the interconnectivity we take for granted has utility in real conflict, and therefore must be accounted for in training scenarios. Scenario-based learning is an effective teaching mechanism, allowing for both in-depth knowledge transfer and experimentation. Scenarios allow a level of immersion not present in other forms of learning and can expand on what is currently possible to provide greater insight into theoretical situations. However, designing and integrating technology into scenario-based exercises is difficult and often results in failure, from the perspective of the relevance of the learning outcomes to real life. This work has two distinct aims;to develop a framework that adapts and expands upon known software development project management paradigms to enhance both the quality and success rate of technology integration into scenario-based training, and to implement this for a scenario. This paper outlines the processes, challenges and mechanisms specifically faced when developing and integrating new technology for scenario-based learning opportunities, then discusses a specific implementation and the lessons learned.

Recently, Blockchain technology has gained considerable attention from researchers and practitioners. This is mainly due to its unique features including decentralization, security, reliability, and data integrity. Despite this increasing interest, little is recognized and that over existing notion of knowledge and experience concerning the usages of Blockchain technology in education. The whole paper is a comparative study on Blockchain-based educational software. In this paper we present a practical method that can be applied to support the prioritization of large sets of candidate software features in a requirements prioritization process. We consider as prioritization criteria the satisfaction/dissatisfaction of users from offering/not offering software features as part of an upcoming software release. There is often an asymmetry between users' satisfaction and dissatisfaction when these two factors are considered as prioritization criteria of features: some features may generate satisfaction to users, if included in the next software release, but do not create the same value of dissatisfaction, if they are not included, and vice versa. This asymmetry may introduce additional hesitation and uncertainty to stakeholders when they adopt satisfaction/dissatisfaction as prioritization criteria. The suggested method initially requires from stakeholders to systematically rank all candidate features based on satisfaction and dissatisfaction criteria. Then, the method is used to quantify the hesitation of stakeholders that is inherent in each features ranking. The final features' priorities are computed by calculating objective weights for all stakeholders' rankings. The method assumes the larger the hesitation (lack of knowledge and indeterminacy) associated with each stakeholder ranking, the smaller will be the weight of that ranking in the calculation of the final features' priorities.

software innovation is a core differential factor for organizational survival to deliver faster, better, and more cost effective software solutions. Accordingly, different approaches to innovations have been developed, e.g. Design Thinking from the field of design, Lean Startup from the field of entrepreneurship, and agile development approaches from the field of software engineering. There are increased research efforts to investigate how to combine these approaches. However there is a lack of knowledge on how to train professionals in applying and integrating these approaches. This article describes a one-day training workshop based on the InnoDev model, developed in former research. InnoDev combines Design Thinking, Scrum and Lean Startup and is targeted at software developers, designers, and project managers in companies ranging from startups and SMEs to multinationals. Specifically, this article describes the workshop format and reports on the participants perceptions of the combined approach and the workshop experience. Overall participants had a positive experience in our workshop, became aware of new tools and techniques for software development, and perceived the combination of three innovation approaches as applicable and beneficial within their companies.
