In natural disasters or emergency situations, communication base stations may suffer damage or become unavailable. In such scenarios, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can serve as communication relay devices, assisting in the restoration of disrupted communication services. In this paper, we investigate the optimization of multi-UAV-enable communication networks with Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA). Our objective is to maximize the system throughput while ensuring fairness by optimizing decisions such as user-UAV association, subchannel number, subchannel allocation, transmission power allocation, and UAV trajectory. Due to the complexity of the problem, we decompose the original problem into two subproblems: 1) the user-UAV association problem and 2) the communication resource allocation and UAV trajectory optimization problem. To address the first subproblem, we propose a User-UAV Association (U2A) algorithm based on K-means. However, due to the tight coupling between subchannel number and subchannel allocation decisions, solving the second subproblem directly is challenging. Therefore, we propose a novel Two Time-scale communication Resource Allocation and Trajectory Optimization (TTRATO) algorithm based on Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning (MADRL). We address the minimum charging station (Min-Station) placement problem for unlabelled robots. The input consists of a graph G=(V,E), with given starting and target positions S⊂V and T⊂V, respectively, for a set of m robots. A robot moves one step by transitioning from one vertex to an adjacent vertex in G and has a movement capacity of r steps, meaning it can move up to r steps without recharging from either its starting position or a charging station. Each target position must be occupied by exactly one robot to complete the motion. The objective is to determine the minimum number of charging stations needed to ensure all target positions are reached. We prove that this problem is NP-hard, even for bounded degree graphs with a maximum degree of 6. However, on the positive side, we present linear and quadratic time algorithms for the Min-Station problem on paths and cycles. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Transformer-based language models have achieved outstanding results on a wide range of tasks, but often at the expense of high computational demands. In response, we introduce Seek2Skim, a novel token pruning method seamlessly integrated into the sequence-to-sequence architecture. Unlike previous efforts that dynamically adjust computations in either the encoder or decoder, Seek2Skim further improves computational efficiency by simultaneously enhancing both components. Our method incorporates trainable modules that assess token importance, pruning less crucial tokens to effectively reduce computational overhead. Additionally, we introduce dynamic cross-attention filtering to preserve model performance even with reduced token representation updates. Extensive experiments confirm the effectiveness of Seek2Skim, demonstrating substantial speed improvements across diverse tasks. Notably, Seek2Skim preserves over 99% of the backbone model’s performance with a 1.91× and 1.53× inference speedup for text classification and generation tasks. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Many studies have been carried out to establish the effectiveness of conversational agents on the behavior of older people with dementia with positive findings. In recent years, studies have shown that conversational agents have potential in addressing behavioral and communication challenges for people with dementia and their caregivers. These technologies have been shown to provide cognitive stimulation, encourage social interaction, provide personal assistance and much more that will be mentioned throughout the paper. In this study, we describe and report on the co-design process that was utilized for developing voice-based conversational agents. We describe the insights and recommendations that emerged from observing the three focus groups that included individuals with dementia and their caregivers. In this work, we explore the effectiveness of using co-design activities in the creation of voice-based conversational agents for people with dementia. We do this by addressing three key research questions: 1) What type of challenges and barriers affect the implementation of the co-design process for people with dementia and their caregivers? 2) How can we co-design technologies with participants who are directly involved in the provision of care for people with dementia? and 3) In what way does the resulting assistive technology support the provision of care for people with dementia and their caregivers. At the end of the study a number of challenges and insights are mentioned. The paper is organized into section introduction, literature review, results, discussions and conclusions.

Social media platforms help users share opinions and find new information but also spread rumors, which misinforms the public. These rumour threads often prompt users (called guardians) to respond with fact-checking articles to debunk or verify the rumour. We examine how general users’ and rumour starter respond to these fact-checking (FC) comments. This study explores these aspects by analysing users’ textual and non-textual engagements. These engagements are examined across three main factors: platforms (Twitter and Reddit), rumour topics, and the primary medium (text, image, video, and GIF) in the rumour post. We observed minimal differences across primary mediums by analyzing 147K news posts and FC comments with 20.7 million replies. Furthermore, we found that Reddit users engage with FC comments more than Twitter users in terms of likes and the rumour starter’s reply-back rates. We found that no general users engaged with the rumour post before and after the guardian intervention. The most significant differences in the emotive characteristics of replies were across topics, with rumour starters expressing more anger, disgust, and offensive language when discussing rumours about terrorism and racism. These emotions indicate the backfire effect. Our findings raise concerns about the effectiveness of fact-checking interventions in updating misinformed users. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The growing importance of energy-efficient networks capable of handling high data rates poses a significant concern for network operators. With the evolution of new mobile data network standards, there has been a surge in the number of subscribers and an increased demand for high-speed data traffic, enabling seamless streaming of social media content within seconds. Network operators are tasked with meeting consumer satisfaction, and to achieve high data rates and good signal quality, they have adopted the deployment of small cells. In this research, energy efficiency is enhanced through an investigation of the small cell-controlled scheme, which is then extended to incorporate a power control strategy based on throughput measurements. Additionally, energy consumption is reduced by adjusting the transmit power based on traffic patterns. Specifically, during periods of normal traffic, the power utilization is set at 40% of the total power, while in times of increased traffic intensity, 60% of the total power is allocated. This traffic intensity-based power distribution scheme results in a 13–15% increase in energy efficiency compared to the small cell-controlled sleep mode. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

This article investigates challenges and requirements related to the reproducibility of geospatial research using geospatial web-services. Several researchers have identified hinders related to technology on the one hand, as well as challenges regarding existing well-known standards that respect FAIR principles (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable). Therefore four hypotheses are established regarding reproducibility using geospatial webservices. These four hypotheses are addressed in an online survey. The results shows correlations between academic affiliations, open standards, and reproducibility in geospatial research.

Museums have an educational function that can be used as a means of education, especially in learning history at school. As we know, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the face-to-face learning system to virtual. So, teachers cannot invite students to study history in museums. Virtual museum games can be an alternative solution to this problem by presenting remote facilities that can make it easier for students to explore knowledge about history without any restrictions. This study aims to develop a virtual museum game to model the history of computers evolution. This study uses the DDD-E model in developing this game. The reason for using this model is that every development and addition of new features to the game will be evaluated. Development evaluation is carried out by conducting expert validation using the LORI instrument. The virtual museum game "Compustory" was developed using a first-person perspective with 3D models to visualize the evolutionary history of computers. The results of the validation show that the average percentage score obtained is 99% with the eligibility qualification of "Very Eligible" used as an educational medium to teach the history of computer development in schools and is considered capable of making learning more enjoyable and recreation. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.
