Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are a powerful tool for representing domain knowledge in a way that is interpretable for both humans and machines. They have emerged as enablers of semantic integration in various domains, including Business Process Modeling (BPM). However, existing KG-based approaches in BPM lack the ability to capture dynamic process executions. Rather, static components of BPM models, such as Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) elements, are represented as KG instances and further enriched with static domain knowledge. This poses a challenge as most business processes exhibit inherent degrees of freedom, leading to variations in their executions. To address this limitation, we examine the semantic modeling of BPMN terminology, models, and executions within a shared KG to facilitate the inference of new insights through observations of process executions. We address the issue of representing BPMN models within the concept or instance layer of a KG, comparing potential implementations and outlining their advantages and disadvantages in the context of a human-AI collaboration use case from a European smart manufacturing project. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the use of machine learning approaches to build a dictionary of terms to analyze text for ESG content using a bag of words approach, where ESG stands for "environment, social and governance." Specifically, the paper reviews some experiments performed to develop a dictionary for information about the environment, for "carbon footprint". We investigate using Word2Vec based on Form 10K text and from Earnings Calls, and queries of ChatGPT and compare the results. As part of the development of our dictionaries we find that bigrams and trigrams are more likely to be found when using ChatGPT, suggesting that bigrams and trigrams provide a "better" approach for the dictionaries developed with Word2Vec. We also find that terms provided by ChatGPT were not as likely to appear in Form 10Ks or other business disclosures, as were those terms generated using Word2Vec. In addition, we explored different question approaches to ChatGPT to find different perspectives on carbon footprint, such as "reducing carbon footprint" or "negative effects of carbon footprint." We then discuss combining the findings from each of these approaches, to build a dictionary that could be used alone or with other ESG concept dictionaries. © 2023, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

In hybrid collaboration settings, co-located and remote learners simultaneously work together on shared material and joint tasks. Promoting equal participation of all group members in hybrid collaboration - especially the remote ones - is a particular, yet underresearched challenge. To address this research gap, in a previous study we identified 16 requirements for improving hybrid collaboration. We converted each requirement into multiple solution options that help to meet the respective requirement. As not all these options can be integrated into the design of a hybrid collaboration setting, we need to know how these options can be prioritized and which combination of them is most promising and should be further investigated. Thus, we conducted six focus group sessions with three collaborative learners (university students) each to gain further insights into the appropriate design. We used storyboards and scenarios with conceptual designs of the solution options for each requirement that needed final design decisions in order to discuss possible solutions. The results of our exploration helped to identify a hybrid collaboration setting that might be most promising for promoting equal participation: On the basic technical side, for example, each co-located participant should use their own camera in addition to one shared camera for the whole group. The identified setting also combines script-based support with a group awareness tool. Thus, it, provides guidance on how to approach group work to ensure equal participation, and additionally allows to reflect on whether contributions are being distributed equally.

In recent years, digital technologies and serious game have widely affected the cultural heritage sector, offering incredible opportunities to enhance the experiential value of heritage assets and improve cultural activities. Due to pandemic and the closure of museums the demand for new digital remote solutions for Cultural Heritage has seen a great increase. Thanks to a collaboration between University of Catania, the Museum of Mineralogy, Petrography and Volcanology and a local SME iInformatica S.r.l a serious game for dissemination of mineralogic and petrographic science was developed. The idea behind the project is to give to all the possibility to learn by doing. Through the simulator, users can assume the role of researchers in mineralogy and petrography and, thus, study the minerals constituting the rocks. Within the game a player can learn how to use a petrographic microscope and how to recognise a rock by analysing the single minerals that constitute it and, therefore, to identify the rock itself. © 2023, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Collaborative perception holds the promise of enhancing the accuracy of 3D object detection over single-vehicle perception. However, existing collaborative perception methods face persistent challenges, including overly complex fusion strategies, noise introduced by directly replicating full-size features, and excessive communication overhead. To tackle these issues, this paper proposes an innovative framework for collaborative perception based on knowledge distillation, an early-fusion-based teacher model guides an intermediate-fusion-based student model for efficient deployment. Within the teacher model, we introduce the Channel-Spatial Attention Adaptive (CSAA) module, which refines features into enriched representations conducive to collaboration. Additionally, in the student model, we employ a feature filter to identify valuable regions, alongside feature compression techniques by quantization and entropy coding to further reduce transmission volume. Moreover, we introduce an adaptive knowledge distillation method focusing on target-centric areas, embedding crucial clues into the student network to enhance perception performance. Extensive experiments conducted on the V2XSim2.0 dataset demonstrate the superiority of our method, achieving a 10.3% improvement in accuracy over the state-of-the-art collaborative perception method, while reducing 46× communication volume. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

This paper presents an improved framework for character-aware audio-visual subtitling in TV shows. Our approach integrates speech recognition, speaker diarisation, and character recognition, utilising both audio and visual cues. This holistic solution addresses what is said, when it’s said, and who is speaking, providing a more comprehensive and accurate character-aware subtitling for TV shows. Our approach brings improvements on two fronts: first, we show that audio-visual synchronisation can be used to pick out the talking face amongst others present in a video clip, and assign an identity to the corresponding speech segment. This audio-visual approach improves recognition accuracy and yield over current methods. Second, we show that the speaker of short segments can be determined by using the temporal context of the dialogue within a scene. We propose an approach using local voice embeddings of the audio, and large language model reasoning on the text transcription. This overcomes a limitation of existing methods that they are unable to accurately assign speakers to short temporal segments. We validate the method on a dataset with 12 TV shows, demonstrating superior performance in speaker diarisation and character recognition accuracy compared to existing approaches. Ancient Chinese Reading Comprehension (ACRC) is challenging for the absence of datasets and the difficulty of understanding ancient languages. Further, among ACRC, entire-span-regarded (Entire spaN regarDed, END) questions are especially exhausting because of the input-length limitation of seminal BERTs, which solve modern-language reading comprehension expeditiously. To alleviate the datasets absence issue, this paper builds a new dataset ACRE (Ancient Chinese Reading-comprehension End-question). To tackle long inputs, this paper proposes a non-trivial model which is based on the convolution of multiple encoders that are BERT decedents, named EVERGREEN (EVidence-first bERt encodinG with entiRE-tExt coNvolution). Besides proving the effectiveness of encoding compressing via convolution, our experimental results also show that, for ACRC, first, neither pre-trained AC language models nor long-text-oriented transformers realize its value;second, the top evidence sentence along with distributed sentences are better than top-n evidence sentences as inputs of EVERGREEN;third, comparing with its variants, including dynamic convolution and multi-scale convolution, classical convolution is the best. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

The advent of big data has brought numerous conveniences and benefits but has also heightened users’ privacy concerns. Traditional methods like data masking and encryption secure user access control but suffer from storage space wastage due to data padding limitations. Moreover, these systems face decoding challenges and risk exposing confidential information after decryption. To overcome these issues, this study aims to develop a format-preserving encryption (FPE) based privacy-preserving technique to maintain user access control while optimizing anomaly detection accuracy and minimizing information loss. This method first generates a fixed-length key for each algorithm based on specified key length parameters, then continue the same length and format for the ciphertext as the original plaintext ensuring compatibility with databases. Our analysis of accuracy, information loss over ac-curacy, and information loss over root mean square error (RMSE) demonstrates the overall efficacy of the proposed method. Our experiment on brain computer interface (BCI) based electroencephalogram (EEG) data achieves 96.55% accuracy and requires only 2.41 s of computation for user access control. Remarkably, use of cryptography does not significantly impact performance compared to a non-privacy-preserving framework. Our developed framework will guide future researchers to develop more effective privacy protection mechanisms in BCI technology, ensuring the security of confidential information. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Within the framework of a workshop held to present the DUXAIT-NG platform, a heuristic evaluation with the approach proposed by Granollers was carried out as a case study, with the participation of 20 participants with different profiles and experience in usability and user experience. In this case study, the Municipality's website was evaluated, specifically the Transportation section of Metropolitan Lima. This experience allowed the participants to get in touch with the DUXAIT-NG tool to carry out the entire evaluation, from planning to execution and reporting but also allowed to deepen the usability levels of the website in question. Thanks to the qualitative and quantitative nature of Granollers' proposal, the results showed a 48.39% usability percentage, which implies a medium-low level of usability. The heuristics with the lowest levels were HG10 (Help and documentation), HG11 (Save the state and protect the work), and HG14 (Defaults). The heuristics with the highest levels were HG02 (Connection between the system and the real world, metaphor usage, and human objects), HG05 (Recognition rather than memory, learning, and anticipation), and HG04 (Consistency and standards). Likewise, the participants could leave their most relevant observations and comments during the evaluation, which allowed for a qualitative deepening of the results. In this sense, it was concluded that the Transport section's website of the Municipality of Lima has many points for improvement, especially in the heuristics mentioned above. This information is essential as a starting point for redesign or continuous improvement processes and for improving the User Experience in general websites of other municipalities and the public sector. Finally, the participants' positive reception of the DUXAIT-NG tool is worth mentioning.
