Aeromagnetic datasets can be used for regional- scale geological mapping in poorly exposed or studied geological terrains. Linear anomalies in aeromagnetic images correspond to faults and dykes, and their discontinuities and change of orientation have significant impact on various mineralisation phenomena. Thus for mineral exploration, robust detection and mapping of linear anomalies are an important step in interpreting aeromagnetic data. This paper presents an automatic tool that maps linear anomalies in aeromagnetic datasets. It detects dominant linear anomalies and then identifies their skeletal segments, revealing offsets within the linear anomaly. This is achieved through the following processes. Firstly, the regions of magnetic discontinuity corresponding with lithological boundaries and crustal breaks are identified through texture and bilateral symmetric feature detection. Secondly, dominant linear anomalies are identified using the Radon transform from the regions of discontinuity output from the first stage. Thirdly, we detect the skeletal segments that belong to each of the dominant linear features. This is achieved by finding all skeletal line segments of the regions of discontinuity and identifying the line segments that correspond with each of the dominant linear features using their orientations and locations. Finally, the skeleton segments for each of the linear anomalies are overlaid on the aeromagnetic image. An experiment was conducted using aeromagnetic data of the Yilgarn Craton in Western Australia.

To facilitate human-robot interactions, human gender information is very important. Motivated by the success of manifold learning for visual recognition, we present a novel clustering-based discriminative locality alignment (CDLA) algorithm to discover the low-dimensional intrinsic submanifold from the embedding high-dimensional ambient space for improving the face gender recognition performance. In particular, CDLA exploits the global geometry through k-means clustering, extracts the discriminative information through margin maximization and explores the local geometry through intra cluster sample concentration. These three properties uniquely characterize CDLA for face gender recognition. The experimental results obtained from the FERET data sets suggest the superiority of the proposed method in terms of recognition speed and accuracy by comparing with several representative methods.

This paper proposes to apply optimized one-class support vector machines (1-SVMs) as a discriminative framework in order to address a specific audio classification problem. First, since SVM-based classifier with gaussian RBF kernel is sensitive to the kernel width, the width will be scaled in a distribution-dependent way permitting to avoid under-fitting and over-fitting problems. Moreover, an advanced dissimilarity measure will be introduced. We illustrate the performance of these methods on an audio database containing environmental sounds that may be of great importance for surveillance and security applications. The experiments conducted on a multi-class problem show that by choosing adequately the SVM parameters, we can efficiently address a sounds classification problem characterized by complex real-world datasets.

通过讨论和分析经典特征向量匹配算法的基本原理和抗噪性能问题,提出2种新的点匹配算法:加权特征向量算法和顺序匹配算法.加权特征向量匹配算法通过对点集距离矩阵进行特征向量分解获得点集中点的特征向量,而后利用特征值对向量加权,通过比较点的加权特征向量相似性来获取匹配关系.顺序匹配算法避免了矩阵分解,直接对距离矩阵的距离向量进行排序,通过较有序的向量来获取匹配关系.这2种算法,解决了经典特征向量匹配算法中抗噪性能差和高斯参数选择的2个问题.实验结果表明,算法切实可行,文中结论正确.

Orientation sensitivity to graspable objects: An fMRI adaptation study

It has been proposed that vision-for-perception and vision-for-action are subserved by distinct streams of visual processing, the ventral and dorsal stream, respectively [Milner, A. D., Goodale, M. A., 1995. The visual brain in action. Oxford University Press, Oxford]. Such a distinction has been supported by a recent functional magnetic resonance (fMR) adaptation study [Valyear, K. F., Culham, J. C., Sharif, N., Westwood, D., Goodale, M. A., 2006. A double dissociation between sensitivity to changes in object identity and object orientation in the ventral and dorsal visual streams: A human fMRI study. Neuropsychologia 44, 218-228], which demonstrated selectivity to object identity but not object orientation within the ventral stream, and selectivity to object orientation but not object identity within the dorsal stream. These results were interpreted as suggesting that changes to object identity (but not to orientation) would alter the representation of the stimulus in the perceptual/recognition system, whereas changes in object orientation (but not necessarily identity) would alter the coding of the stimulus within a visuomotor system concerned with behaviour such as grasping. If orientation sensitivity in the dorsal stream does reflect such a potential for action, then this sensitivity should be specific to graspable objects. Using an fMR adaptation paradigm, we presented participants with an image of either a graspable or non-graspable stimulus, followed by the same image in either the original orientation or its mirror image. One region within the dorsal stream, the lateral occipito-parietal junction (IOPJ), was shown to be sensitive to orientation changes for graspable stimuli;this region did not show orientation sensitivity for non-graspable stimuli. Thus, it appears that the sensitivity to orientation changes in this region is specific to graspable objects, presumably because such changes affect the affordances of graspable but not non-graspable objects. In this paper, we introduce the primal sketch model which might lead to a new image compression method. The primal sketch model integrates two modeling schemes for two type components in natural images: the sketchable and the non-sketchable parts. The sketchable part explains the structural components of the image by using a hidden layer of image primitives. The non-sketchable part denotes the remaining textural components without distinguishable elements by Markov random field models for texture images. The primitives in the image representation are not independent but organized as a sketch graph. The whole image can be coded by a sketch graph with a primitive dictionary and texture descriptors. Such a lossy coding scheme could achieve the compression ratio of 20 to 40 for natural images. With the similar visual effect, the coding length of JFEG2000 is about 1.5 to 3 times higher. This promising compression method could be applied to some situations such as wireless transmission where the bandwidth is critical and low quality images are still acceptable.

在印刷电路板贴片安装的机器视觉检测中,贴片元件的型号识别和缺陷检测都是基于CCD采集的图像,数据量大、维数太多,该图像特征的提取是正确检测识别的关键技术之一。遗传编程通过遗传优化可以从原始数据或传统的高维特征中提取出更能反映类别本质的有效特征,降低特征维数、减少分类器的计算成本,同时提高分类识别精度。设计基于遗传编程的特征提取方案用于该机器视觉检测,并改进了特征评价指标。对比实验验证了本方案提取的特征分别用于ANN和SVM的良好分类识别效果。

Excellence Cluster "Cognitive Interaction Technology" - Cognition as a Basis for Natural Interaction with Technical Systems

What is necessary to enhance the command of complex technical systems in order to reach the ease and naturalness of human communication? How can we endow technical devices with the necessary cognitive abilities to support humans at a high level of semantic interaction offering true flexibility by virtue of adaptivity, self-organization, and learning? These are the guiding questions of the Excellence Cluster "Cognitive Interaction Technology" established since November 2007 at Bielefeld University. It focusses the efforts of computer scientists, psychologists, linguists, physicists and biologists on the goal of establishing cognitive interfaces that facilitate the use of complex technical systems by providing a high level of semantic interaction. This combines interdisciplinary, basic, and applied research beyond the classical confines of artificial intelligence. It aims at a thorough understanding of the processes and functional constituents of cognitive interaction in order to replicate it in technical systems including the development of evaluation methodologies and tool-kits for such systems. The research agenda of the EC is organized around four central topic areas: Motion Intelligence, Attentive Systems, Situated Communication, Memory and Learning. In addition, the EC is offering a cross-disciplinary education program.

This paper describes a portable diagnostic telecardiology system, aimed to benefit the rural people of a third world country like India. The designed system consists of two major blocks; the first one is required to be carried to the patient home, named 'Portable Telecardiology Kit'. The second one, named 'Automated Cardiac Signal Processor', a PC based system, to be permanently placed at the nearest rural health care center. The 'Portable Telecardiology Kit' contains a portable ECG machine, a dedicated microcontroller-based full duplex communication system, both interfaced, in a single enclosure. This kit will convert the ECG signal along with a tag page (containing different information regarding patient's health and history of illness) to a digitized serial electromagnetic wave. The signal may be transmitted over a distance of about 7-10 km through a cordless phone under full duplex mode. The PC-based system, after receiving the transmitted signal from patient site, extract the ECG signal after proper filtering, and then pass the signal through an in-built knowledge-base. Finally, a rule-based rough set decision system is generated for the development of an inference engine for disease identification from these time-plane features. The system will generate a report indicating the preliminary level abnormalities, and the precautions that can be adopted at an early stage. The entire report is then sent to the Portable kit at the patient bed-site.
