The seeing hand is the hand that restores a person's peripheral vision;moving it eliminates the "hemianopia" seen in lesions affecting the minor hemisphere. This article documents the role of directionality of callosal traffic that underpin this well-documented but as yet unexplained phenomenon. By indexing cases in which macular vision was spared or damaged in lesions affecting the minor or major hemisphere, respectively, it is concluded that the role of the minor hemisphere in vision is to widen me expanse of visual experience rather man participating in seeing per se. As to somatosensory data arising from the nondominant side of the body, evidence indicates that awareness of dimensionality in space awaits the arrival of the signals from the minor to the major hemisphere via the callosum. This explains the fact that neglect is limited to lesions affecting the minor hemisphere. Evidence also indicates that the improvement of neglect upon moving the seeing hand requires an extant callosum (anteriorly), so as to allow the entry of excitatory commands from the major hemisphere for moving the nondominant side awaken the injured (dormant) minor hemisphere;thus representing the contralateral hemispace ignored prior to these movements. The seeing hand is therefore farther from the major hemisphere by a callosum-width (i.e. it is the hand with the longer reaction time). Using data from inspection time, lexical decision and reaction time studies, it is shown that the relationship of the seeing hand to behavioral laterality is statistical.

Primates are remarkably good at recognizing objects. The level of performance of their visual system and its robustness to image degradations still surpasses the best computervision systems despite decades of engineering effort. In particular, the high accuracy of primates in ultra rapid object categorization and rapid serial visual presentation tasks is remarkable. Given the number of processing stages involved and typical neural latencies, such rapid visual processing is likely to be mostly feedforward. Here we show that a specific implementation of a class of feedforward theories of object recognition (that extend the Hubel and Wiesel simple-to-complex cell hierarchy and account for many anatomical and physiological constraints) can predict the level and the pattern of performance achieved by humans on a rapid masked animal vs. non-animal categorization task.

Segmentation of regions of interest in an image has important applications in medical image analysis, particularly in computer aided diagnosis. Segmentation can enable further quantitative analysis of anatomical structures. We present efficient image segmentation schemes based on the solution of distinct partial differential equations (PDEs). For each known image region, a PDE is solved, the solution of which locally represents the weighted distance from a region known to have a certain segmentation label. To achieve this goal, we propose the use of two separate PDEs, the Eikonal equation and a diffusion equation. In each method, the segmentation labels are obtained by a competition criterion between the solutions to the PDEs corresponding to each region. We discuss how each method applies the concept of information propagation from the labelled image regions to the unknown image regions. Experimental results are presented on magnetic resonance, computed tomography, and ultrasound images and for both two-region and multi-region segmentation problems. These results demonstrate the high level of efficiency as well as the accuracy of the proposed methods.

In this paper we present a user independent real-time capable automatic method for recognition of facial expressions related to basic emotions from stereo image sequences. The method automatically detects faces in unconstraint pose based on depth and color information. In order to overcome difficulties caused by increasing change in pose, lighting transitions, or complicated background, we introduce a face normalization algorithm based on an Iterative Closest Point algorithm. In normalized face images we defined a set of physiologically motivated face regions related to a subset of facial muscles which are apt to automatically detect the six well-known basis emotions. Visual facial expression analysis takes place by an optical flow based feature extraction and a nearest neighbor classification, which uses a distance measure, i.e. the current flow vector pattern is matched against empirically determined ground truth data.

Recent stereo cameras provide reliable 3D reconstructions. These are useful for selecting ground-plane points, register them and building mosaics of cluttered ground planes. In this paper we propose a 2D Iterated Closest Point (ICP) registration method, based on the distance transform, combined with a fine-tuning-registration step using directly the image data. Experiments with real data show that ICP is robust to 3D reconstruction differences due to motion and the line tuning step minimizes the effect of the uncertainty in the 3D reconstruct ions.
In the statistical patternrecognition field the number of samples to train a classifier is usually insufficient. Nevertheless, it has been shown that some learning domains can be divided in a set of related tasks, th...

This paper presents a new technique based on perceptual information for the robust segmentation of noisy 3D scenes acquired by stereo vision. A low-pass geometric filter is first applied to the given cloud of 3D points to remove noise. The tensor voting algorithm is then applied in order to extract perceptual geometric information. Finally, a graph-based segmenter is utilized for extracting the different geometric structures present in the scene through a region-growing procedure that is applied hierarchically. The proposed algorithm is evaluated on real 3D scenes acquired with a trinocular camera.
