In the agronomic domain, the simplification of crop counting is a very important and fastidious step for technical institutes such as Arvalis, which has then proposed us to use image processing to detect the number of wheat cars in images acquired directly in a field. Texture image segmentation techniques based on feature extraction by first and higher order statistical methods have been developped for unsupervised pixel classification. The K-Means algorithm is implemented before the choice of a threshold to highlight the ears. Three methods have been tested with very heterogeneous results, except the run length technique for which the results are closed to the visual counting with an average error of 6%. Although the evaluation of the quality of the detection is visually done, automatic evaluation algorithms are currently implementing. Moreover, other statistical methods of higher order must be implemented in the future jointly with methods based on spatio-frequential transforms and specific filtering.

In this paper, we propose a new gaze estimation method by analyzing the cornea surface model which is estimated through three dimensional analysis of human eye in HMD (Head Mounted Display) environments. This paper has four advantages over previous works. First, in order to obtain accurate gaze position, we use a cornea sphere model based on Gullstrand eye scheme. Second, we calculate the 3D position of the cornea sphere and a gaze vector by using a camera, three collimated IR-LEDs and one illuminated IR-LED. Third, three coordinates such as camera, monitor and eye coordinates are unified, which can simplify the complex 3D converting calculation and allow for calculation of the 3D eye position and gaze position on a HMD monitor. Fourth, a simple user dependent calibration method is proposed by gazing at one position of HMD monitor based on Kappa compensation. Experimental results showed that the average gaze estimation error of the proposed method was 0.89 degrees.

The map-seeking circuit (MSC) is an explicit biologically-motivated computational mechanism which provides practical solution of problems in object recognition, image registration and stabilization, limb inverse-kinematics and other inverse problems which involve transformation discovery. We formulate this algorithm as discrete dynamical system on a set Delta = Pi(L)(l=1)Delta((l)), where each Delta((l)) is a compact subset of a nonnegative orthant of R-n, and show that for an open and dense set of initial conditions in Delta the corresponding solutions converge to either a vector with unique nonzero element in each Delta((l)) or to a zero vector. The first result implies that the circuit finds a unique best mapping which relates reference pattern to a target pattern;the second result is interpreted as "no match found". These results verify numerically observed behavior in numerous practical applications.

This paper presents a robust implementation of an object tracker able to tolerate partial occlusions, rotation and scale for a variety of different objects. The objects are represented by collections of interest points which are described in a multi-resolution framework, giving a representation of those points at different scales. Inspired by [1], a stack of descriptors is built only the first time that the interest points are detected and extracted from the region of interest. This provides efficiency of representation and results in faster tracking due to the fact that it can be done off-line. An Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) using a constant velocity model estimates the position and the scale of the object, with the uncertainty in the position and the scale obtained by the UKF, the search of the object can be constrained only in a specific region in both the image and in scale. The use of this approach shows an improvement in real-time tracking and in the ability to recover from full occlusions.

The problem of planning the Next Best View (NBV) still poses many questions. However, the achieved methods and algorithms are hard to compare, since researchers use their own test objects for planning and reconstruction and compute specific quality measures. Consequently, these numbers make different statements about different objects. Thus, the quality of the results and the performance of the methods are not easily comparable. In order to mend this lack of measure and comparability, this paper suggests a test object together with a reference benchmark. These allow comparison of reconstruction results from different NBV algorithms achieved with different techniques and various kinds of sensors.

Hand gesture has been used as a natural and efficient way in human computer interaction. Due to independence of auxiliary input devices, vision-based hand interfaces is more favorable for users. However the process of hand gesture recognition is very time consuming, which often brings much frustration to users. In this paper we propose a fast feature detection and description approach which can significantly speed up hand gesture recognition. Firstly, integral image is used to approximate Gaussian derivatives to calculate image convolution in feature detection. Then multi-scale geometric descriptors at feature points are obtained to represent hand gestures. Finally gesture is recognized with its geometric configuration. Experiments show that the proposed method needs much less time consumption while obtains comparative performance with its counterpart in literatures.
