Fractal Video Compression (FVC) is of extensive interest for over 20 years. Instead of being implemented on square image structure, Spiral Architecture (SA) based fractal image compression is proposed in this paper to illustrate the great potential of FVC on SA. Conceptually, a new definition of range block and domain block is presented on this enhanced image structure. Compared with the conventional square image architecture, spiral architecture provides higher fidelity to fractal image compression, which is demonstrated by the experimental results.

Car plate detection is a key component in automatic license plate recognition system. This paper adopts an enhanced cascaded tree style learner framework for car plate detection using the hybrid object features including the simple statistical features and Harr-like features. The statistical features are useful for simplifying the process on cascade classifier. The cascaded tree-style detector design will further reduce the false alarm and the false dismissal while retaining a high detection ratio. The experimental results obtained by the proposed algorithm exhibit the encouraging performance. © 2006 IEEE.

Using colour histogram as a stable representation over change in view has been widely used for object recognition. In this paper, three newly proposed histogram-based methods are compared with other three popular methods, including conventional histogram intersection (HI) method, Wong and Cheung's merged palette histogram matching (MPHM) method, and Gevers' colour ratio gradient (CRG) method. These methods are tested on vehicle number plate images for number plate classification. Experimental results disclose that, the CRG method is the best choice in terms of speed, and the GWHI method can give the best classification results. Overall, the CECH method produces the best performance when both speed and classification performance are concerned. © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper, we review some pattern recognition schemes published in recent years. After giving the general processing steps of pattern recognition, we discuss several methods used for steps of pattern recognition such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) in feature extraction, Support Vector Machines (SVM) in classification, and so forth. Different kinds of merits are presented and their applications on pattern precognition are given. The objective of this paper is to summarize and compare some of the methods for pattern recognition, and future research issues which need to be resolved and investigated further are given along with the new trends and ideas. In recent times, there are increasing numbers of computer vision and pattern recognition (CVPR) technologies being applied to real time video processing using single processor PCs. However, these multiple computational expensive tasks are generating bottlenecks in real-time processing. We propose a scheme to achieve both high throughput and accommodation to user-specified scheduling rules. The scheduler is then distributing 'slices' of the latency insensitive tasks such as video object recognition and facial localization among the latency sensitive ones. We show our proposed work in detail, and illustrating its application in a real-time e-learning streaming system. We also provide discussions into the scheduling implementations, where a novel concept using interleaved SIMD execution is discussed. The experiments have indicated successful scheduling results on a high end consumer grade PC. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

In recent times, computer vision and pattern recognition (CVPR) technologies made automatic feature extraction, events detection possible in real-lime, on-the-fly video processing and streaming systems. However, these multiple and computational expensive video processing tasks require specialized processors to ensure higher frame rate output. We propose a framework for achieving high video frame rate using a single processor high-end PC while multiple, computational video tasks such as background subtraction, object tracking, recognition and facial localization have been performed simultaneously. We show the framework in detail, illustrating our unique scheduler using latency insensitive tasks distribution and the execution coulent parameters generation function (PGF). The experiments have indicated successful results using high-end consumer type PC. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Visual attention is the ability to rapidly detect the visually salient parts of a given scene. Inspired by biological vision, the saliency-based algorithm efficiently models the visual attention process. Due to its complexity, the saliency-based model of visual attention needs, for a real time implementation, higher computation resources than available in conventional processors. This work reports a real time implementation of this attention model on a highly parallel Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) architecture called ProtoEye. Tailored for low-level image processing, ProtoEye consists of a 2D array of mixed analog-digital processing elements (PE). The operations required for visual attention computation are optimally distributed on the analog and digital parts. The analog diffusion network is used to implement the spatial filtering-based transformations such as the conspicuity operator and the competitive normalization of conspicuity maps. Whereas the digital part of ProtoEye allows the implementation of logical and arithmetical operations, for instance, the integration of the normalized conspicuity maps into the final saliency map. Using 64 × 64 gray level images, the on ProtoEye implemented attention process operates in real-time. It runs at a frequency of 14 images per second. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

The paper presents a genetic selection of biologically inspired receptive field geometry to improve pattern recognition in neural network classifiers. A genetic algorithm is employed to select the x, y dimensions and orientation of the receptive fields in a four hidden layer neural network with two planes per layer. Networks were ranked based on the fitness criterion: best generalization performance on a handwritten digit database. Results show strong correlation between the neural network performance and the receptive field x and y dimensions and orientation. The genetic algorithm improves classification performance by selecting appropriate receptive field size and orientation. The best receptive field configuration results outperformed those of perception based models. The proposed method allows a comparison among different architectures of receptive fields to find general patterns of improved performance. © 1999 IEEE.

A new navigation method based on measurements of image token positions and Kalman filtering is presented. An image token is the central projection of a landmark, apoint on the terrain surface. This surface being described by a topographical map, the Kalman filter processes the measurements to update estimates of camera position and orientation, and landmark positions. Tests of an implementation for aeroplane navigation indicate a performance comparable to, or better than, that of satellite navigation systems. The implemented algorithm also seems to have a high tolerance against noise and modelling errors. © 1992 IEEE.

The purpose of the 2007 International Conference on Biometrics (ICB 2007) was to provide a platform for researchers, engineers, s- tem architects and designers to report recent advances and exchange ideas in the area of biometrics and related technologies. ICB 2007 received a large number of high-quality research papers. In all 303 papers were submitted from 29 countries around the world. Of these 34 papers were accepted for oral presentation and 91 papers were accepted for poster presentation.
