A novel algorithm to derive the isothetic convex envelope (ICE) of an object using a digital geometric technique is proposed in this paper. ICE is defined as the isothetic convex polygon that contains the digital object, with an aim of capturing its underlying shape information. Slackening the tightness of an ICE corresponding to a digital object is achievable by increasing the grid size, and for a slackened ICE with lesser output complexity (i.e., with lesser number of vertices), the runtime of the algorithm falls significantly. The proposed algorithm is marked by its dependence on object boundary instead of object size, and usage of primitive integer operations in the digital domain, which, in entirety, ensures its speedy execution and acceptability in a real-world application. Experimental results including CPU time demonstrate the elegance of ICE and the efficiency of the proposed algorithm

In recent years,feature based object detection has attracted increasing attention in computer vision research ***,to our best knowledge,no previous work has focused on utilizing local binary pattern (LBP) for vehicle detection in Intelligent Transportation System(ITS) *** this paper,we develop a novel traffic monitoring system based on N-LBP algorithm,which is the new LBP texture descriptor *** approach includes three steps: firstly the general critical ingredients (GCI for short) are selected from LBP features through training to indicate *** GCI are extracted from region of interest (ROI) in the new image for object detection and *** Kalman filter is employed for feature based tracking *** results demonstrate the superiority of N-LBP feature over basic LBP feature,and performance of the new system is more stable and reliable.

One of the most confusing aspects that one meets when introducing oneself into gaze tracking technology is the wide variety, in terms of hardware equipment, of available systems that provide solutions to the same matter, that is, determining the point the subject is looking at. The calibration process permits generally adjusting nonintrusive trackers based on quite different hardware and image features to the subject. The negative aspect of this simple procedure is that it permits the system to work properly but at the expense of a lack of control over the intrinsic behavior of the tracker. The objective of the presented article is to overcome this obstacle to explore more deeply the elements of a video-oculographic system, that is, eye, camera, lighting, and so forth, from a purely mathematical and geometrical point of view. The main contribution is to find out the minimum number of hardware elements and image features that are needed to determine the point the subject is looking at. A model has been constructed based on pupil contour and multiple lighting, and successfully tested with real subjects. On the other hand, theoretical aspects of videoo-culographic systems have been thoroughly reviewed in order to build a theoretical basis for further studies. Copyright (C) 2007 A. Villanueva and R. An Ordinal Co-occurrence Matrix Framework for Texture Retrieval

We present a novel ordinal co-occurrence matrix framework for the purpose of content-based texture retrieval. Several particularizations of the framework will be derived and tested for retrieval purposes. Features obtained using the framework represent the occurrence frequency of certain ordinal relationships at different distances and orientations. In the ordinal co-occurrence matrix framework, the actual pixel values do not affect the features, instead, the ordinal relationships between the pixels are taken into account. Therefore, the derived features are invariant to monotonic gray-level changes in the pixel values and can thus be applied to textures which may be obtained, for example, under different illumination conditions. Described ordinal co-occurrence matrix approaches are tested and compared against other well-known ordinal and nonordinal methods. Copyright (C) 2007 Mari Partio et al.

Automatic Eye Winks Interpretation System for Human-Machine Interface

This paper proposes an automatic eye-wink interpretation system for human-machine interface to benefit the severely handicapped people. Our system consists of (1) applying the support vector machine (SVM) to detect the eyes, (2) using the template matching algorithm to track the eyes, (3) using SVM classifier to verify the open or closed eyes and convert the eye winks into a sequence of codes (0 or 1), and (4) applying the dynamic programming to translate the code sequence to a certain valid command. Different from the previous eye-gaze tracking methods, our system identifies the open or closed eye, and then interprets the eye winking as certain commands for human-machine interface. In the experiments, our system demonstrates better performance as well as higher accuracy. Copyright (c) 2007 Che Wei-Gang et al.

轮廓线的自动匹配问题是计算机视觉、自动化和模式识别中的一个重要问题。传统的匹配方法中在特征描述部分容易出现误差,并且缺乏全局性。为此提出了基于连续函数曲率概念的周期性离散曲率函数,解决普通轮廓线勾画外形中的图形匹配问题。周期性离散曲率函数具有和原有图形相似的位移、旋转和缩放特性,具有很强的全局性。该方法具有直观和速度快的特点,并且实用可靠,可广泛地应用于类似系统。

本文提出了一种通过计算机视觉技术检测连铸中间包内钢水层液位高度的方法。从中间包内空气层中穿过保护渣层向钢水层中插入一个铝碳质的测量棒,通过安装于测量棒侧上方的摄像机采集测量棒图像,进而确定保护渣层的实时液位。待测量棒与周围介质达到热平衡后,升起测量棒,并通过摄像机采集测量棒外壁的温场分布,根据保护渣层和钢水层分界面处存在局部温度梯度峰值的特征识别分界面位置及保护渣层厚度,从而确定中间包内钢水层液位。同时,本文对于液位测量系统的构成以及降温、防尘等关键问题进行了研究。现场应用结果表明:本方法能够有效克服保护渣层影响,实现中间包内钢水层液位的可靠测量,测量偏差小于5mm。

The content of a full-view spherical image is independent of the camera rotation. In this paper we propose a method of qualitative localization of a robot by full-view spherical images. First, a robot is guided by humans and memorizes the rout scenes by capturing a spherical image sequence from a spherical image sensor; then the robot localizes itself by matching the current spherical image with the stored ones in terms of the similarity of the feature vectors computed from the histograms of spherical images. The advantage of the proposed full-view image approach over the lower hemispherical images from conventional catadioptric omnidirectional camera is shown by real-world experiments of both indoor and outdoor environment.
