This paper proposes the exploitation of a dynamic programming technique for efficiently comparing people trajectories adopting an encoding scheme that jointly takes into account both the direction and the velocity of movement. With this approach, each pair of trajectories in the training set is compared and the corresponding distance computed. Clustering is achieved by using the k-medoids algorithm and each cluster is modeled with a 1-D Gaussian over the distance from the medoid. A MAP framework is adopted for the testing phase. The reported results are encouraging.

JPEG2000-Compatible Scalable Scheme for Wavelet-Based Video Coding

We present a simple yet efficient scalable scheme for wavelet-based video coders, able to provide on-demand spatial, temporal, and SNR scalability, and fully compatible with the still-image coding standard JPEG2000. Whereas hybrid video coders must undergo significant changes in order to support scalability, our coder only requires a specific wavelet filter for temporal analysis, as well as an adapted bit allocation procedure based on models of rate-distortion curves. Our study shows that scalably encoded sequences have the same or almost the same quality than nonscalably encoded ones, without a significant increase in complexity. A full compatibility with Motion JPEG2000, which tends to be a serious candidate for the compression of high-definition video sequences, is ensured. Copyright (C) 2007 Thomas Andre et al.

Zerotrees of wavelet coefficients have shown a good adaptability for the compression of three-dimensional images. EZW, the original algorithm using zerotree, shows good performance and was successfully adapted to 3D image compression. This paper focuses on the adaptation of EZW for the compression of hyperspectral images. The subordinate pass is suppressed to remove the necessity to keep the significant pixels in memory. To compensate the loss due to this removal, signed binary digit representations are used to increase the efficiency of zerotrees. Contextual arithmetic coding with very limited contexts is also used. Finally, we show that this simplified version of 3D-EZW performs almost as well as the original one. Copyright (C) 2007 Emmanuel Christophe et al.

This paper describes a linear programming (LP) algorithm for labelling (segmenting) a color image into multiple regions. Compared with the recently-proposed semi-definite programming (SDP) relaxation based algorithm, our algorithm has a simpler mathematical formulation, and a much lower computational complexity. In particular, to segment an image of M × N pixels into k classes, our algorithm requires only O((M N k)m) complexity--a sharp contrast to the complexity of O((M N k)2n ) offered by the SDP algorithm, where m and n are the polynomial degrees-of- complexity of the corresponding LP solver and SDP solver, respectively (in general we have m n). Moreover, LP has a significantly better scalability than SDP generally. This dramatic reduction in complexity enables our algorithm to process color images of reasonable sizes. For example, while the existing SDP relaxation algorithm is only able to segment a toy-size image of e.g. 10 × 10 30 × 30 pixels in a few hours, our algorithm can process larger color image of, say, 100 × 100 500 × 500 image in a much shorter time.

The AVC|H.264 video coding standard adopts 4x4 integer transform on residuals between an original pixel block and its motion-compensated pixel block to make better prediction for the improvement of temporal redundancy reduction. Detecting all-zero blocks prior to integer transform in AVC|H.264 was taken into account as an important step in fast encoding process. Different from the previous approaches to early detection of all-zero blocks based on sums of absolute differences and quantization steps, this paper designed a linear classifier with additional features available before integer transform. With significant features to detect all-zero IT coefficients, the linear classifier improved detection accuracy so that skipping the integer transform process could accelerate the encoding process and minimize the encoding performance drop in PSNR values. The linear classifier is trained with large amount of training data and tested by video sequences with different characteristics. Experimental results demonstrated that through a wide range of quantization parameters and video sequences the proposed approach improved detection of all-zero blocks over the conventional approach with negligible amounts of PSNR degradation.

The large shape variability and partial occlusions challenge most object detection and tracking methods for non- rigid targets such as pedestrians. Single camera tracking is limited in the scope of its applications because of the limited field of view (FOV) of a camera. This initiates the need for a multiple-camera system for completely monitoring and tracking a target, especially in the presence of occlusion. When the object is viewed with multiple cameras, there is a fair chance that it is not occluded simultaneously in all the cameras. In this paper, we developed a method for the fusion of tracks obtained from two cameras placed at two different positions. First, the object to be tracked is identified on the basis of shape information measured by MPEG- 7 ART shape descriptor. After this, single camera tracking is performed by the unscented Kalman filter approach and finally the tracks from the two cameras are fused. A sensor network model is proposed to deal with the situations in which the target moves out of the field of view of a camera and reenters after sometime. Experimental results obtained demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme for tracking objects under occlusion.

Face recognition finds its place in a large number of applications. They occur in different contexts related to security, entertainment or Internet applications. Reliable face recognition is still a great challenge to computer vision and pattern recognition researchers, and new algorithms need to be evaluated on relevant databases. The publicly available IV 2 database allows monomodal and multimodal experiments using face data. Known variabilities, that are critical for the performance of the biometric systems (such as pose, expression, illumination and quality) are present. The face and subface data that are acquired in this database are: 2D audio-video talking-face sequences, 2D stereoscopic data acquired with two pairs of synchronized cameras, 3D facial data acquired with a laser scanner, and iris images acquired with a portable infrared camera. The IV 2 database is designed for monomodal and multimodal experiments. The quality of the acquired data is of great importance. Therefore as a first step, and in order to better evaluate the quality of the data, a first internal evaluation was conducted. Only a small amount of the total acquired data was used for this evaluation: 2D still images, 3D scans and iris images. First results show the interest of this database. In parallel to the research algorithms, open-source reference systems were also run for baseline comparisons.

This paper presents the results of the Handwriting Segmentation Contest that was organized in the context of the ICDAR2013. The general objective of the contest was to use well established evaluation practices and procedures to record recent advances in off-line handwriting segmentation. Two benchmarking datasets, one for text line and one for word segmentation, were created in order to test and compare all submitted algorithms as well as some state-of-the-art methods for handwritten document image segmentation in realistic circumstances. Handwritten document images were produced by many writers in two Latin based languages (English and Greek) and in one Indian language (Bangla, the second most popular language in India). These images were manually annotated in order to produce the ground truth which corresponds to the correct text line and word segmentation results. The datasets of previously organized contests (ICDAR2007, ICDAR2009 and ICFHR2010 Handwriting Segmentation Contests) along with a dataset of Bangla document images were used as training dataset. Eleven methods are submitted in this competition. A brief description of the submitted algorithms, the evaluation criteria and the segmentation results obtained from the submitted methods are also provided in this manuscript.

A closed form solution to the problem of segmenting multiple 3D motion models was proposed from straight-line optical flow. It introduced the multibody line optical flow constraint (MLOFC), a polynomial equation relating motion models and line parameters. The motion models can be obtained analytically as the derivative of the MLOFC at the corresponding line measurement, without knowing the motion model associated with that line. Experiments on real and synthetic sequences were also presented.
