Multi-scale ICA texture pattern for gender recognition

A discriminative face feature, i.e. multi-scale ICA texture pattern (MITP), is proposed for automatic gender recognition. First, independent component analysis (ICA) filters of various scales are learned using randomly collected face patches from training samples. Each face image is then encoded by sorting the responses of these filters. Finally, a histogram feature is formed based on the non-overlapping subregions of the encoded images. The newly proposed sparse classifiers are adopted for classification. Experiments on two benchmark face databases validate the effectiveness of MITP.

The new technologies set the stage for Mobile Learning. In this paper, we explored a Mobile Teaching-Learning pattern and its advantages. And then we modeled courses with Atom and Atom Publishing Protocol. Grounded on the pattern and modeling, we implemented mobile learning client side with Apple technologies, which could achieve anytime, anywhere learning. And at last, we discussed the application of our system.

The projections of world parallel lines in an image intersect at a single point called the vanishing point (VP). VPs are a key ingredient for various vision tasks including rotation estimation and 3D reconstruction. Urban environments generally exhibit some dominant orthogonal VPs. Given a set of lines extracted from a calibrated image, this paper aims to (1) determine the line clustering, i.e. find which line belongs to which VP, and (2) estimate the associated orthogonal VPs. None of the existing methods is fully satisfactory because of the inherent difficulties of the problem, such as the local minima and the chicken-and-egg aspect. In this paper, we present a new algorithm that solves the problem in a mathematically guaranteed globally optimal manner and can inherently enforce the VP orthogonality. Specifically, we formulate the task as a consensus set maximization problem over the rotation search space, and further solve it efficiently by a branch-and-bound procedure based on the Interval Analysis theory. Our algorithm has been validated successfully on sets of challenging real images as well as synthetic data sets.

Detecting roadside curb is a challenging research topic for stereo vision, as the curb is only 10-30cm higher than the road surface and the difference between the curb and road surface is usually interfered by the noise in the disparity map. In this paper, a roadside curb detection algorithm integrating the advantages of stereo vision and mono vision is proposed. At first, the rough results are detected from the disparity varied curve and then sign filters are used to get quite robust results. At last, the curb lines are estimated by using weighted Hough transform. Experimental results show that this algorithm can detect the roadside curb fast and effectively.

A 2D-vision system is integrated into a drink-serving robotic cell, to enhance its flexibility. Two videocameras are used in a hybrid configuration scheme. The former is rigidly mounted on the robot end effector, the latter is fixed to the workplace. The robot cell is based on two Denso robots that interoperate to simulate real human tasks. Blob analysis, template matching and edge detection algorithms cooperate with motion procedures for fast object recognition and flexible adaptation to the environment. The paper details the system workflow, with particular emphasis to the vision procedures. The experimental results show their performance in terms of flexibility and robustness against defocusing, lighting conditions and noise. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Software Testing is a costly and time consuming process in software development. Therefore, software testing tools are often deployed to automate the process in order to reduce cost and improve efficiency. However, many of them are proprietary and expensive. Hence, open source software testing tools could be an appealing alternative. In this paper, we survey the current states of open source software testing tools from three aspects, namely, their availability for different programming platforms and types testing activities, maintenance of the tools and license limitations. From the 152 tools surveyed, we found that open source software testing tools not only are widely available for popular programming platforms, but also support a wide range of testing activities. Furthermore, we also found that more than half of the tools surveyed have been actively maintained and updated by the open source communities. Finally, these tools have very few licensing limitations for commercial use, customization and redistribution.

Face recognition has recently become very hot research topic in computer vision and multimedia information processing. To integrate the human perception of local micro-pattern to face recognition, this paper proposes an improve LBP face representation based on Weber's law. First, inspired by psychological Weber's law, the human perception of local micro-pattern is defined by the ratio between two terms: one is relative intensity differences of a central pixel against its neighbors and the other is intensity of local central pixel. Second, regarding the perception of local micro-pattern as its weight, the weighted LBP histogram is constructed with the defined weight. Finally, to make full use of the space location information and lessen the complexity of recognition, the partitioning and uniform patterns are applied to get final features. Three face image databases, namely, ORL, Yale and Extended Yale-B, are used to evaluate performance. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed face recognition method.

This article describes an intelligent system that enables the automatic recognition of road signs from image sequences in road environments. The main difficulties the system has to deal with are related to changes in lighting conditions, obstacles blocking the view, the presence of objects with geometric and chromatic similarities and the absence of previous knowledge about their position and orientation. The application of different techniques allows the system to overcome this variety of problems. Therefore, the road sign recognition system is based on a first pre-processing of images, making use of information about road geometry to isolate those areas of the image where road signs may appear. The detection step uses colour and shape analysis to determine the regions of the image where potential road signs may be located. A third step focuses on recognition and classification using pattern matching and edge feature analysis. The proposed algorithm has been tested in different weather and lighting conditions and roads (one and two-lane roads and motorways), overall, a total of 1200 kilometres with a very high success rate of detection and classification as the experimental results show.

Optical flow algorithm proposed by Horn and Schunck (OFCE-HS) in 1981 was the first technique and one of the best performers for motion estimation. Attempts to implement OFCE-HS into real-time hardware have been performed by researchers. Hardware architecture of OFCE-HS proposed by Martin et al. with full integer for all calculations is one of the attempts. However, the hardware architecture has a significant drawback because it requires two dividers which decrease the speed of the system, increase the use of resources and add errors in the truncation of the least significant bits. To overcome this problem, new proposed hardware architecture of OFCE-HS is presented in this paper. With calculations using a combination of integer and fractional arithmetic, it is possible to reduce the number of dividers and to improve its performance. The goal of this work is to design hardware architecture of OFCE-HS which can increase the speed of the system, lower resource utilization and achieve good precision and accuracy compared previous works.

The purpose of this paper is to classify the sole patterns from a 3D shoe model which is comprised of scattered point cloud data. Sole patterns can be divided into five categories based on the texture of each pattern. The point cloud data is sliced into a number of layers, and the unordered data points in each layer are projected onto a viewing plane to get a 2D shoeprint, in which we can further segment a texture element by region growing. Then, each texture element segmented can be classified into two types, non-closed curve and closed curve, by detecting if there are point cloud data in each external unit of the region and looking for the nearest points to the region. Finally, we can identify the type of the texture element into one of the five categories by analyzing its geometrical characteristics.
