Using a microscope to recognize a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) requires specialized knowledge and is time-consuming. This method is, however, widely employed by HAB taxonomists. To provide a better solution, a HAB recognition system has been developed which is based on image analysis. This paper presents the architecture of this system, as well as sone performance results. The key component is the libiplhab library based on computervision libraries (such as OpenCV and LIBSVM), which contain image processing and patternrecognition algorithms suitable for HAB microscope images.

Humans, as well as many living organisms, are gifted with the power of "seeing" and "understanding" the environment around them using their eyes. The ease with which humans process and understand the visual world is very deceiving and often prompts us to underestimate the effort and methods needed to build practical, effective, and inexpensive computervision systems. In essence, humans have a 500-million-year head start due to evolution;it is extremely difficult at this point to build a computervision system that has the abilities of a three-year-old child. However, by confining ourselves to particular domains, we can often find shortcuts to solve particular problems. This paper illustrates a number of such solutions in various areas developed by our group at IBM. These include object finding for video surveillance, person identification via biometrics, inspection of manufactured items along railways, and scene understanding for driver assistance, as well as object recognition and motion interpretation for retail stores. We discuss the real-world constraints for each system and describe how we overcame the irksome variability inherent in each task. By further analyzing such successful systems and comparing them to each other, we can come to understand the common underlying problems and thus start to extend our initially limited areas of competence into a more general-purpose vision toolkit. This paper concludes with a set of challenging unresolved problems that if solved could spur great progress in practical computervision.
The robustness of Mutual Information (MI), the most used multimodal dense stereo correspondence measure, is restricted by the size of the matching windows. However, obtaining the appropriately sized MI windows for mat...

In this paper, a review of vision-based natural disaster warning methods is presented. Because natural disaster warning is receiving a lot of attention in recent research, a comprehensive review of various disaster-warning techniques developed in recent years is needed. This paper surveys recent studies on warning systems four different types of natural disaster, i.e., wildfire smoke and flame detection, water level detection for flood prevention, and coastal zone monitoring, using computervision and pattern-recognition techniques. Finally, we conclude with some thoughts about future research directions.

In this study, the authors study the performance of a novel active appearance model (AAM)-based fully automatic system for pose robust face recognition that allows faster fitting to a no frontal view and generation of virtual views. The system follows a multiresolution scheme, where the first level is used to initialise a generic AAM, pose angle is automatically estimated using eigenvector analysis, and then a pose-dependent AAM model is selected. Next level refines AAM model fitting and registration. Finally, a virtual frontal view is created before face matching. recognition results over CMU PIE database show similar values compared with the performance achieved with manually landmarked faces. Compared with a classical view-based approach, this multiresolution scheme performs similarly but is sensibly faster.
