The next generation of Compton telescopes (such as MEGA or NCT) will detect impinging gamma rays by measuring one or more Compton interactions, possibly electron tracks, and a final photo absorption. However, the recovery of the original parameters of the photon, especially its energy and direction, is a challenging task, since the measured data only consists of a set of energy and position measurements and their ordering, i.e. the path of the photon, is unknown. Thus the main tasks of the pattern recognition algorithm are to identify the interaction sequence of the photon (i.e. which hit is the start point) and distinguish the pattern from background signatures, especially incompletely absorbed events. The most promising approach up to now is based on Bayesian statistics: The Compton interactions are parameterized in a multi-dimensional data space, which contains the interaction information of the Compton sequence as well as geometry information of the detector. For each data space cell the probability that the corresponding interaction sequence is one of a correctly ordered, completely absorbed source photon can be determined by Bayesian statistics and detailed simulations. This probability can then be used to distinguish source photons from incompletely absorbed photons. Simulations show that the Bayesian approach can improve the 68% event containment of the ARM distribution by up to 40%, and results in a much better separation between '' good '' and '' bad '' events. In addition, sensitivity improvements up to a factor 1.7 can be achieved.

The rapid growth in multimedia based Internet systems and applications like video telephony, video on demand and also tele-medicine has created a great need for multimedia security. One of the important requirements for multimedia security is encryption. Owing to the size of multimedia data and real time requirements, lightweight encryption schemes are important. Lightweight encryption schemes are based on taking the structure of multimedia data into consideration and partially encrypting the content. Even though several lightweight encryption schemes are existing for lossy compression schemes, their do not exist any lightweight encryption scheme for lossless compression. In this paper we present a lossless compression scheme for image, and we show how this scheme can be also used for supporting scalable lightweight encryption.

image and data are always needed to be processed and analyzed at real time during high-speed photograph, so high processing speed is required. As the optical wavelet transform utilizes the parallel computation of optical elements, it has a high transform speed. Hence it can be used for image processing and analysis during high-speed photograph. The light-path structure and principle of optical wavelet transform is introduced in this paper. It is realized by using 4f optical information processing system. And the methods for realizing pattern recognition, image feature extraction, image edge enhancement etc. are given. Specially, the requirements on light source, light-path structure, optical elements and filter of optical system are analyzed when optical wavelet transform is used for image compression. And some improved measurements are put forward according to present problems. Firstly, the merits of using white light information processing system for image compression is analyzed. Secondly, adopt liquid crystal light valve and spatial light modulator to strengthen flexibility and practicability. Thirdly, the method of determining focuses of lens and how to use Talbot effect to locate the object plane and spectrum plane are given. Finally, the use of reflecting 4f system is put forward to decrease chromatic aberration and noise in optical wavelet transform. And we have obtained some experimental results which are good for further research.

data compression ideas can be extended to assess the data quality across multiple sensors to manage the network of sensors to optimize the location accuracy subject to communication constraints. From an unconstrained-resources viewpoint it is desirable to use the complete set of deployed sensors;however, that generally results in an excessive data volume. Selecting a subset of sensors to participate in a sensing task is crucial to satisfying trade-offs between accuracy and time-line requirements. For emitter location it is well-known that the geometry between sensors and the target plays a key role in determining the location accuracy. Furthermore, the deployed sensors have different data quality. Given these two factors, it is no trivial matter to select the optimal subset of sensors. We attack this problem through use of a data quality measure based on Fisher Information for set of sensors and optimize it via sensor selection and data compression.

In recent years, several researchers have constructed novel neural network models based on lattice algebra. Because of computational similarities to operations in the system of image morphology, these models are often called morphological neural networks. One neural model that has been successfully applied to many pattern recognition problems is the single-layer morphological perceptron with dendritic structure (SLMP). In this model, the fundamental computations are performed at dendrites connected to the body of a single neuron. Current training algorithms for the SLMP work by enclosing the target patterns in a set of hyperboxes orthogonal to the axes of the data space. This work introduces an alternate model of the SLMP, dubbed the synaptic morphological perceptron (SMP). In this model, each dendrite has one or more synapses that receive connections from inputs. The SMP can learn any region of space deter-mined by an arbitrary configuration of hyperplanes, and is not restricted to forming hyperboxes during training. Thus, it represents a more general form of the morphological perceptron than previous architectures.

As people read texts, their points of gaze can be described either as a sequence or as a pattern of dots. If reading fixations are visualized as a pattern and their duration is graphically attributed to the 3(rd) dimension, image processing techniques can be employed to describe individual reading styles. Two reader groups of text editors and of University students were matching according to parametric tests. Yet they appeared to have marked inter-subject variability of fixation distribution when individual cases were considered. To illustrate this, we applied a simple "Coulomb law"- like model that takes both fixation duration and spacing into account. Further the image entropy filter was shown to distinguish the readers by the extreme value points. Statistical averaging can level out differences in reading patterns that appear by image processing techniques.

Watermarking aims at enforcing property right for digital video: a mark is imperceptibly - transparently - embedded into original data. The true owner is identified by detecting this mark. The robust watermarking techniques allow the mark detection even when the protected video is attacked. Transparency and robustness constraints restrict the mark size: the better transparency and robustness, the smaller the data payload. The paper presents a method to evaluate the maximum quantity of information which can be theoretically inserted into the 2D-DCT coefficient hierarchy, for prescribed transparency and robustness. This approach relies on the noisy channel model for watermarking. Within this mathematical framework, the maximal data payload is expressed by the channel capacity. As any capacity evaluation procedure requires an intimate knowledge of the noise sources, the paper first describes the developed statistical approach enabling: (1) to properly handle the inner dependency existing among successive frames in a video sequence, and (2) to accurately check-out the Gaussian behaviour for each noise source. The experiments were carried out in partnership with the SFR mobile service provider in France (Vodafone group).

Digital holography is a technique that permits digital capture of holograms and subsequent processing on a digital computer. This paper reviews various applications of this technique. The presented applications cover three-dimensional (3-D) imaging as well as several associated problems. For the case of 3-D imaging, optical and digital methods to reconstruct and visualize the recorded objects are described. In addition, techniques to compress and encrypt 3-D information in the form of digital holograms are presented. Lastly, 3-D pattern recognition applications of digital holography are discussed. The described techniques constitute a comprehensive approach to 3-D imaging and processing.

Digital holography can be used to capture the whole Fresnel field from a reflective or transmissive object. applications include imaging and display of three-dimensional (3D) objects, and encryption and pattern recognition of two-dimensional (2D) and 3D objects. Often, these optical systems employ discrete spatial light modulators (SLMs) such as liquid-crystal displays. In the 2D case, SLMs can encode the inputs and keys during encryption and decryption. For 3D processing, the SLM can be used as part of an optical reconstruction technique for 3D objects, and can also represent the key during encryption and decryption. However, discrete SLMs can represent only discrete levels of data necessitating a quantisation of continuous valued analog information. To date, many such optical systems have been proposed in the literature, yet there has been relatively little experimental evaluation of the practical performance of discrete SLMs in these systems. In this paper, we characterise conventional phase-modulating liquid-crystal devices and examine their limitations (in terms of phase quantisation, alignment tolerances, and nonlinear response) for the encryption of 2D and 3D data. Finally, we highlight the practical importance of a highly controlled discretisation (optimal quantisation) for compression of digital holograms.
