Analysis and modeling of an 11.8 GHz Fin Resonant Body Transistor in a 14 nm FinFET CMOS Process

In this work, a compact model is presented for a 14-nm CMOS-based fin resonant body transistor (fRBT) operating at a frequency of 11.8 GHz and targeting radio frequency (RF) generation/filtering for next-generation radio communication, clocking, and sensing applications. Analysis of the phononic dispersion characteristics of the device, which informs the model development, shows the presence of displacement component coupling due to the periodic nature of the back-end-of-line (BEOL) metal phononic crystal (PnC). An eigenfrequency-based extraction process, applicable to resonators based on electrostatic force transduction, has been used to model the resonance cavity. Augmented forms of the Berkeley short channel IGFET model (BSIM)-common multigate (CMG) model for FinFETs are used to model the drive and sense transistors in the fRBT. This model framework allows easy integration with the foundry-supplied process design kits (PDKs) and circuit simulators while being flexible toward change in transduction mechanisms and device architecture. Ultimately, the behavior is validated against RF measured data for the fabricated fRBT device under different operating conditions, leading to the demonstration of the first complete model for this class of resonant device integrated seamlessly in the CMOS stack.

Combat has seen fundamental changes over the past century-with new domains of warfighting (e.g., cyber, space);the introduction of nuclear and precision weapons;ubiquitous, all source intelligence;mixes of national, coalition, and private forces operating;and numerous other examples. Over this same period, combat simulations, and the attendant training, experimentation, and analyses they support, have increased in scale, scope, and resolution. But with respect to their fundamental effectiveness, have they substantively moved beyond the foundation created by Lanchester in the early 20th century? Differential equations of mean field approximations have been complemented by discrete-event simulations at many scales;however, the underlying conceptual framework of force-on-force conflict and tightly constrained, potentially fragile, service-specific command and control remains. In this position paper, we argue that new conceptualizations, better aligned with the modern warfighting landscape, are needed across all applications of military modeling. We examine the potential role of complex adaptive systems in this endeavor.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation of multiphase industrial flows is a significant research concern for studying the performance and efficiency of chemical processes. Within the last years, CFD had growth interest from researchers with the significant increase in computational resources capacities and high-performance calculations. The trend toward focusing on machine learning (ML) techniques to solve complex industrial problems is observed. In contrast, ML has found encouraging and promising applications in that research field by offering a wealth of techniques to extract unreachable knowledge from data that can improve the chemical processes understanding and allows efficient optimization and intensification. This study aims to present the different uses of ML in the chemical processes’ field, particularly the CFD modeling, and highlight the main and variate use of ML for complex geometries design and mesh optimization. We have paid particular attention to the ML trend in turbulence modeling to generate data-driven physical models from CFD simulations at different fidelity levels. Then, the extended application of ML to accelerate CFD calculations, and the development of surrogate models are provided. This work reveals that the application of ML to chemical engineering is a promising way for developing this research area. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

virtual testbed for monocular visual navigation of small unmanned aircraft systems

Monocular visual navigation methods have seen significant advances in the last decade, recently producing several real-time solutions for autonomously navigating small unmanned aircraft systems without relying on the Global Positioning System (GPS). This is critical for military operations that may involve environments where GPS signals are degraded or denied. However, testing and comparing visual navigation algorithms remains a challenge since visual data is expensive to gather. Conducting flight tests in a virtual environment is an attractive solution prior to committing to outdoor testing. This work presents a virtual testbed for conducting simulated flight tests over real-world terrain and analyzing the real-time performance of visual navigation algorithms at 31 Hz. This tool was created to ultimately find a visual odometry algorithm appropriate for further GPS-denied navigation research on fixed-wing aircraft, even though all of the algorithms were designed for other modalities. This testbed was used to evaluate three current state-of-the-art, open-source monocular visual odometry algorithms on a fixed-wing platform: Direct Sparse Odometry, Semi-Direct visual Odometry, and ORB-SLAM2 (with loop closures disabled).

The importance of identifying the dimensionality of constructs employed in simulation and training for AI

Advances at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and education and training are occurring at an ever-increasing pace. On the education and training side, psychological and performance constructs play a central role in both theory and application. It is essential, therefore, to accurately determine the dimensionality of a construct, as it is often employed during both the assessment and development of theory, and its practical application. Traditionally, both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses have been employed to establish the dimensionality of data. Due in part to inconsistent findings, methodologists recently resurrected the bifactor approach for establishing the dimensionality of data. The bifactor model is pitted against traditional data structures, and the one with the best overall fit (according to chi-square, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), comparative fit index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis index (TLI), and standardized root mean square residual (SRMR)) is preferred. If the bifactor structure is preferred by that test, it can be further examined via a suite of emerging coefficients (e.g., omega, omega hierarchical, omega subscale, H, explained common variance, and percent uncontaminated correlations), each of which is computed from standardized factor loadings. To examine the utility of these new statistical tools in an education and training context, we analyze data where the construct of interest is trust. We chose trust as it is central, among other things, to understanding human reliance upon and utilization of AI systems. We utilized the above statistical approach and determined the two-factor structure of widely employed trust scale is better represented by one general factor. Findings like this hold substantial implications for theory development and testing, prediction as in structural equation modeling (SEM) models, as well as the utilization of scales and their role in education, training, and AI systems. virtual inertia (vi) is considered to be an effective method to reduce the rate of change of voltage (RoCo V). Compared with vi, the ramp rate limiter (RRL) could accurately control RoCo V when a disturbance occurs in a DC microgrid (MG), but its impact on the system stability remains unclear when constant power loads (CPL) are included. In this work, the RRL, as a complement to vi, is used to accurately control RoCo V. By modeling the system with RRL, it is demonstrated that RRL would reshape the primary control loop of the DC MG, and decrease the order of the system model. Small-signal and large-signal stability of the system containing RRL and CPL are analyzed. It is demonstrated that RRL could enhance the stability of the DC MG. Furthermore, it is proved that the rate of RRL would not affect the steady-state performance of the DC MG. The proposed method is compared with vi to demonstrate the feasibility and performance of the proposed method using simulation results.

The ARINC 653 operation system is currently widely adopted in the avionics industry, and has become the mainstream architecture in avionics applications because of its strong agility and reliability. Although ARINC 653 can efficiently reduce the weight and energy consumption, it results in a serious development and verification problem for avionics systems. As ARINC 653 is non-open source software and lacks effective support for software testing and debugging, it is of great significance to build a real-time simulation platform for ARINC 653 on general-purpose operating systems, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of system development and implementation. In this paper, a virtual ARINC 653 platform is designed and realized by using real-time simulation technology. The proposed platform is composed of partition management, communication management, and health monitoring management, provides the same operation interfaces as the ARINC 653 system, and allows dynamic debugging of avionics applications without requiring the actual presence of real devices. Experimental results show that the platform not only simulates the functionalities of ARINC 653, but also meets the real-time requirements of avionics applications.

Toward space architecture resilience: a system-theoretic framework for analysis and design

As space-based systems have developed to provide numerous critical capabilities for defense applications, the systems designed to disrupt them have developed as well. Therefore, it is imperative to design, operate, and sustain space architectures for resilience. However, there are limited methodologies available which incorporate adversarial threats for the analysis and design of resilient space architectures. This paper recommends a System-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) framework to qualitatively analyze space architectures and identify design considerations, requirements, and constraints required for resilience. The study demonstrates the analysis framework on a notional remote sensing architecture subjected to a set of adversarial threats. The resulting framework provides (1) a process to assess space architectures for loss scenarios involving adversary threats and (2) a process to determine system behavioral constraints and mitigations to ensure system resilience.

A Bayesian nonparametric approach for estimation of a Dirichlet process (DP) mixture of generalized inverted Dirichlet distributions [i.e., an infinite generalized inverted Dirichlet mixture model (InGIDMM)] has been proposed. The generalized inverted Dirichlet distribution has been proven to be efficient in modeling the vectors that contain only positive elements. Under the classical variational inference (vi) framework, the key challenge in the Bayesian estimation of InGIDMM is that the expectation of the joint distribution of data and variables cannot be explicitly calculated. Therefore, numerical methods are usually applied to simulate the optimal posterior distributions. With the recently proposed extended vi (Evi) framework, we introduce lower bound approximations to the original variational objective function in the vi framework such that an analytically tractable solution can be derived. Hence, the problem in numerical simulation has been overcome. By applying the DP mixture technique, an InGIDMM can automatically determine the number of mixture components from the observed data. Moreover, the DP mixture model with an infinite number of mixture components also avoids the problems of underfitting and overfitting. The performance of the proposed approach is demonstrated with both synthesized data and real-life data applications.
