A general framework of Bayesian network for system reliability analysis using junction tree

To perform the reliability analysis of complex and large-scale systems, Bayesian network (BN) can be useful as it facilitates modelling the causal relationship between multiple types of variables, e.g. hazards, material properties, and inspection results. However, its conventional approach shows limitations in handling large-scale systems and advanced inference tasks such as continuous distributions and approximate inference. On the other hand, these issues have been successfully addressed by system reliability analysis (SRA) theory, while the complexity of system reliability methods (SRMs) makes it challenging to handle multiple types of variables collectively. Accordingly, to facilitate the reliability analysis of real-world problems, this paper develops a general framework to implement BN for SRA by employing junction tree (JT). The connection between BN and SRA is further consolidated by summarizing common computational challenges and proposing heuristics to resolve them. While it provides a systematic way to implement SRMs within the BN framework, such generalization can also be used to enhance the functionality of the general-purpose software programs developed for BN as demonstrated by the companion Matlab (R)-based toolkit BNS-JT. The applicability and efficiency of the proposed framework are demonstrated by numerical examples.

engineering Science Based on modelling and simulation (M & S) is defined as the discipline that provides the scientific and mathematical basis for simulation of engineering systems. These systems range from microelectronic devices to automobiles, aircraft, and even oilfield and city infrastructure. In a word, M & S combines knowledge and techniques in the fields of traditional engineering-electrical, mechanical, civil, chemical, aerospace, nuclear, biomedical and materials science-with the knowledge and techniques of fields such as computer science, mathematics and physics, and social sciences. One of the problems that arise during solar cell operation is that of heating them because of permanent solar radiation. Since the layers of which they are made are very small and thick it is almost impossible to experimentally determine the temperature in each layer. In this sense, the finite element method comes and provides a very good prediction and gives results impossible to obtain by other methods. This article models and then simulates the thermal composition of two types of solar cells, one of them having an additional layer of silicon carbide that aims to lower the temperature in the lower layer, where the electronic components stick to degradable materials under the influence of heat. © 2019 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.

smart City technologies are increasingly coming to the population daily living. smart City technologies provide efficient city services, as a central instrument of receiving various services for residents (energy and water supply, urban infrastructure, transportation etc.). The purpose of research is the definition of methodological approaches of a settlements development modelling. Methods include collation of local and foreign experience in modeling the territorial development of urban and rural settlements. Justification Pentagon-model used for such problems solution was shown. The systems/factors of a rural settlement sustainable development are based on a systematic analysis of existing development models of urban and rural settlements, as well as the authors-developed method for estimating the agro-towns development level. All this allowed to build the rural development model, which consists of five major systems: ecological system, economic system, administrative system, anthropogenic (physical) system and social system (supra-structure). As a results, the methodological approaches for building an estimating model of rural settlements development were revealed (smart City concept, Pentagon concept). The basic motivation factors that provide communication systems were identified;the critical factors for each subsystem were devoted and substantiated. Such approach was justified by the composition of the tasks for spatial planning of the local and state level offices. The expediency of applying smart City concept and the basic Pentagon-model that were successfully used in solving the analogous problems of sustainable development was shown.

Improved control strategy for fixed-speed compressors in parallel system

Control systems for parallel compressor trains consist of a discharge pressure, anti-surge and load-sharing regulation. Control of a parallel compressor system has proven to be challenging because the control targets usually exhibit control interactions between the different control loops. To decouple this control interference, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has developed an advanced feed-forward control structure for parallel fixed-speed compressor systems. However, operation in the presence of an unpredictable disturbance presents a few technical challenges for this structure. Most of these problems result in poor load sharing and then operation in the recycle mode in order to protect the system from surge conditions. Moreover, an anti-surge control delay occurs when operating under a low load. To overcome these problems, an improved control structure that incorporates an additional discharge flow controller signal and a nonlinear signal calculator for anti-surge valve control is proposed. To demonstrate the benefits of the proposed method, the control performance of the conventional control structure is compared to that of the proposed control structure. The target process is a parallel fixed-speed compressor system for a fuel gas supply plant. The improved control structure allows for desired load-sharing control, which is not possible with the conventional control structure. The improved control structure manages to exit the anti-surge control region, whereas the conventional control structure activates the interlock system. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The research on thunderstorms and their actions on structures has been a dominant subject in wind engineering since the last 30 years. Despite an impressive amount of work, a model for thunderstorm outflow is not available yet, and the evaluation of thunderstorm actions on structures is still based on the cyclone model developed half a century ago. This is because the dynamic complexity and unpredictability of occurrence of thunderstorms make it difficult to collect reliable and systematic measurements of this atmospheric phenomenon, which are definitely needed in an attempt to develop realistic and simple models. In the context of the two European projects "Wind and Ports" and "Wind, Ports, and Sea", a complex anemometric monitoring network has been realised in the area of the Northern Tyrrhenian and Liguria Sea (North-western Italy) during the period 2009-2015. Since the years 2014-2015, this network is equipped by three LiDAR wind profilers that provide wind velocity measurements up to 250 m above the ground level. All the wind profiles measured until the end of 2015 have been analysed systematically in order to detect the ones that can be referred to thunderstorm events. Hybrid simulation is a versatile, powerful and economical method for modelling large and complex structural systems, combining numerical and experimental models. While the hybrid simulation technique has been used in seismic simulation, application to the other dynamic loads such as strong wind, hurricane and tsunami have been limited. One of the reasons is because displacement based formulation and control used in the conventional hybrid simulation are not always suitable. This study explores a force-based formulation in hybrid simulation. In particular, a new numerical integration method, called weighted Predictor-Corrector force-based algorithm is proposed herein. In the proposed algorithm, force is first predicted in an intermediate step, according to responses at the previous step. The predicted force is imposed to the experiment using force control, and the corresponding displacement is then measured and sent back to the numerical algorithm. Responses at the next step are calculated based on the measured displacement through a correction procedure. Thus, the proposed algorithm enables force-based formulation and allows for force control in hybrid simulation. A preliminary numerical simulation is performed to verify applicability of this proposed algorithm. The numerical simulation demonstrates that this algorithm provides stable and accurate results in force-based hybrid simulation. Most of the currently available structural damage detection approaches are primarily applicable to linear systems in which damage develops slowly. For yielding inelastic systems, new approaches that examine the nonlinear hysteretic restoring force consisting of viscous and stiffness contributions (we call it damped hysteretic resistance (DHR) from now on) are more appropriate to assess damage. In addition, modelling the true inelastic behaviour of different types of structural components or substructures in a parametric way is still challenging. Consequently, it is desirable to establish general model-free inelastic behaviour identification approaches that do not rely on assumed parametric nonlinear hysteretic models a priori. In this paper, we present a data-based model-free damped hysteretic resistance (DMDHR) identification method for evaluating such nonlinear systems. A 6-story lumped-mass numerical linear building structure with Bouc-Wen nonlinear elements at two floors is used for illustration. The structural DHR is identified without prior knowledge of the structural mass distribution or a specific numerical model for the structure. In the simulation example, the nonlinear structure is excited by a random vibration applied to selected DOF (e.g., only 3rd floor is excited). Using records of the excitation and the response with a consideration of noise effects, the nonlinear DHR of the structure is identified. The results show the identified DHRs match the corresponding theoretical (numerical) ones well. © International Conference on Advances in Experimental Structural engineering. All rights reserved.

Power system simulation software is a useful tool for teaching the fundamentals of power system design and operation. However, existing commercial packages are not ideal for teaching work-based students because of high-cost, complexity of the software and licensing restrictions. This paper describes a set of power systems libraries that have been developed for use with the free, student-edition of a Micro-Cap Spice that overcomes these problems. In addition, these libraries are easily adapted to include power electronic converter based components into the simulation, such as HVDC, FACTS and smart-grid devices, as well as advanced system control functions. These types of technology are set to become more widespread throughout existing power networks, and their inclusion into a power engineering degree course is therefore becoming increasingly important.
