Quantum computing based hybrid solution strategies for large-scale discrete-continuous optimization problems

Quantum computing (QC) has gained popularity due to its unique capabilities that are quite different from that of classical computers in terms of speed and methods of operations. This paper proposes hybrid models and methods that effectively leverage the complementary strengths of deterministic algorithms and QC techniques to overcome combinatorial complexity for solving large-scale mixed-integer programming problems. Four applications, namely the molecular conformation problem, job-shop scheduling problem, manufacturing cell formation problem, and the vehicle routing problem, are specifically addressed. Large-scale instances of these application problems across multiple scales ranging from molecular design to logistics optimization are computationally challenging for deterministic optimization algorithms on classical computers. To address the computational challenges, hybrid QC-based algorithms are proposed and extensive computational experimental results are presented to demonstrate their applicability and efficiency. The proposed QC-based solution strategies enjoy high computational efficiency in terms of solution quality and computation time, by utilizing the unique features of both classical and quantum computers. A multi-criteria optimization model for humanitarian aid distribution

Natural disasters are phenomenons which strike countries all around the world. Sometimes, either by the intensity of the phenomenon or the vulnerability of the country, help is requested from the rest of the world and relief organizations respond by delivering basic aid to those in need. Humanitarian logistics is a critical factor in managing relief operations and, in general, there is a lack of attention on the development of mathematical models and solution algorithms for strategic and tactical decisions in this area. We acknowledge that in humanitarian logistics traditional cost minimizing measures are not central, and postulate that other performance measures such as time of response, equity of the distribution or reliability and security of the operation routes become more relevant. In this paper several criteria for an aid distribution problem are proposed and a multi-criteria optimization model dealing with all these aspects is developed. This model is the core of a decision support system under development to assist organizations in charge of the distribution of humanitarian aid. Once the proposed criteria and the model are described, an illustrative case study based on the 2010 Haiti catastrophic earthquake is presented, showing the usefulness of the proposal.

A closed-loop logistic model with a spanning-tree based genetic algorithm

Due to the problem of global warming, the green supply chain management, in particular, closed-loop logistics, has drawn the attention of researchers. Although there were logistics models that were examined in the literatures, most of them were case based and not in a closed-loop. Therefore, they lacked generality and could not serve the purposes of recycling, reuse and recovery required in a green supply chain. In this study, the integration of forward and reverse logistics was investigated, and a generalized closed-loop model for the logistics planning was proposed by formulating a cyclic logistics network problem into an integer linear programming model. Moreover, the decisions for selecting the places of manufactories, distribution centers, and dismantlers with the respective operation units were supported with the minimum cost. A revised spanning-tree based genetic algorithm was also developed by using determinant encoding representation for solving this NP model. Numerical experiments were presented, and the results showed that the proposed model and algorithms were able to support the logistic decisions in a closed-loop supply chain efficiently and accurately. Statement of scope and purposes This study concerns with operations of 3R in the green supply chain logistics and the location selection optimization. Based on 'cradle to cradle' principle of a green product, a "closed-loop" structure of a network was proposed in order to integrate the environmental issues into a traditional logistic system. Due to NP-hard nature of the model, a Genetic Algorithm, which is based on spanning tree structure was developed. Test problems from the small size for accuracy to the large scale for efficiency have been demonstrated with comparison. In large chemical companies, traffic logistics and supply chain logistics contain many decision problems which are suitable to be solved by mathematical optimization. The objectives are to exploit resources (traffic infrastructure such as roads and rail lines, production equipment) in a cost optimal way and to maximize profit. We present two cases: optimal sequences of rail cars in trains visiting various plants in a large company complex, and production and distribution planning. Finally, we discuss the importance of data structure and the consequences of differences between the"booking world" view of systems such as SAP and the"physical world" mapped into mathematical optimization models. © models and algorithms for optimization in logistics *** right reserved.

Railway freight transportation is a very important issue in the development of national economic. This paper presents a railway freight transportation capacity optimal problem with the consideration of integrated logistics system. The classical railway capacity optimal problem can equivalent to the train scheduling problem. This paper consider with two kinds of cost: (i) the inventory costs: incurs when the train arrived in the Railway Freight Station;(ii) the transportation costs: incurs when there exists a train Operation between a source and a destination. A new model for the Railway capacity planning with Consideration of Integrated logistics is established on the basis of classic train scheduling models, the proposed models, more close to the realistic world, can provide better support to the development of transportation. A genetic algorithm for solving this problem is proposed and demonstrated;a numerical example reveals that the GA can obtain good solution of the problem effective. Copyright ASCE 2009.

Path selection is one of the fundamental problems in emergency logistics management. Two mathematical models for path selection in emergency logistics management are presented considering more actual factors in time of disaster. First a single-objective path selection model is presented taking into account that the travel speed on each arc will be affected by disaster extension. The objective of the model is to minimize total travel time along a path. The travel speed on each arc is modeled as a continuous decrease function with respect to time. A modified Dijkstra algorithm is designed to solve the model. Based oil the first model, we further consider the chaos, panic and congestions in time of disaster. A multi-objective path selection model is presented to minimize the total travel time along a path and to minimize the path complexity. The complexity of the path is modeled as the total number of arcs included in the path. An ant colony optimization algorithm is proposed to solve the model. Simulation results show the effectiveness and feasibility of the models and algorithms presented in this paper. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
