An efficient fuzzy hyper-edge clustering and popularity-based caching scheme for CCN-enabled IoT networks

Content-Centric networking (CCN) has emerged as the most convenient architecture for efficient traffic management in contrast to the IP-based Internet. The in-network caching characteristic of CCN reduces server load and traffic in the network. Furthermore, it enhances end-user Quality-of-Service (QoS) by reducing content retrieval delay. Towards this, the proposed research focuses on the in-network caching capability of CCN-enabled IoT networks to improve content distribution and reduction of load from servers. In CCN-enabled IoT networks, content caching can be performed in any node of the fog layer that exists between the cloud server and IoT devices. To effectively utilize the available caching resources, it is crucial to determine the suitable fog node during content placement decisions. In this direction, a novel fuzzy hyper-edge clustering and content popularity-based caching scheme is proposed for CCN-based IoT networks. The proposed fuzzy clustering scheme dynamically partitions the network into overlapping clusters based on node connectivity. The proposed scheme overcomes the limitations of existing techniques where the number of clusters needs to be fixed initially. The proposed scheme considers the cluster information and content access frequency parameters for content placement decisions. Using the proposed heuristics, the scheme cooperatively caches the popular contents in the fog nodes near IoT devices. The performance of the proposed strategy is examined using extensive simulations on a realistic network configuration. Experiments are performed on the standard Abilene topology, and performance is measured using metrics such as cache hit ratio, average network hop count, and average network delay on cache sizes 50 and 100. The simulation results are recorded at 1, 250, 500, 750, 1000, 1250, 1500, 1750, and 2000 Simulation Time Units (STU). In the evolution of artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), reasoning, knowledge representation, planning, learning, natural language processing, perception, and the ability to move and manipulate objects have been widely used. These features enable the creation of intelligent mechanisms for decision support to overcome the limits of human knowledge processing. In addition, ML algorithms enable applications to draw conclusions and make predictions based on existing data without human supervision, leading to quick, near-optimal solutions even in problems with high dimensionality. Hence, autonomy is a key aspect of current and future AI/ML algorithms. This chapter focuses on the development and implementation of AI/ML technologies for 5G and future networks. The objective is to illustrate how these technologies can be smoothly migrated into 5G systems to increase their performance and to decrease their cost. To that end, this chapter presents the Drivers, Needs, Challenges, Enablers, and Potential Solutions identified for the AI/ML field as applicable to future networks over three-, five-, and ten-year horizons. AI/ML applications for 5G are wide and diverse. In this document, some of the key areas are described which includes networking, securing, cloud computing and others. Over time, this white paper will evolve to encompass even more areas where AI/ML technologies can improve future network performance objectives. © 2022 IEEE.

Communication and networking courses, especially wireless communication and networking courses, have become more and more important in many disciplines such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Computer Engineering. Due to costly hardware needed for communication and networking teaching laboratories, many of these courses are taught without a laboratory. In the rare cases of existing labs, such hardware based teaching labs lack the flexibility to evolve over time and adapt to different environments. Supported by a NSF TUES type II project, we have developed a series of software defined radio (SDR) based mixed signal detection laboratories for enhancing undergraduate communication and networking curricula. In our previous NSF funded CCLI project "Evolvable wireless laboratory design and implementation for enhancing undergraduate wireless engineering education", we have developed and demonstrated the first nationwide example of evolvable SDR based laboratories for three existing undergraduate courses. In this project, we are developing new lab components that can be adopted by multiple courses ranging from freshman year introductory course to senior year capstone design projects. Specifically, in this paper, we report the development of a SDR based mixed radio frequency signal detection platform with a graphical user interface (GUI). This user-friendly GUI will allow students to adjust RF parameters such as carrier frequency, symbol rate, pulse shaping filter, etc., and mix multiple RF signals together. Additionally, students are able to observe the transmitted signal in both time and frequency at both transmitter and receiver. At receiver side, the SDR based platform also provides students the functionality of performing RF signal detection via different detection methods including energy based detection, waveform based detection, and cyclostationary analysis based detection. With the advent of social networks and cloud computing, the amount of multimedia data produced and communicated within social networks is rapidly increasing. In the mean time, social networking platform based on cloud computing has made multimedia big data sharing in social network easier and more efficient. The growth of social multimedia, as demonstrated by social networking sites such as Facebook and YouTube, combined with advances in multimedia content analysis, underscores potential risks for malicious use such as illegal copying, piracy, plagiarism, and misappropriation. Therefore, secure multimedia sharing and traitor tracing issues have become critical and urgent in social network. In this paper, we propose a scheme for implementing the Tree-Structured Harr (TSH) transform in a homomorphic encrypted domain for fingerprinting using social network analysis with the purpose of protecting media distribution in social networks. The motivation is to map hierarchical community structure of social network into tree structure of TSH transform for JPEG2000 coding, encryption and fingerprinting. Firstly, the fingerprint code is produced using social network analysis. Secondly, the encrypted content is decomposed by the TSH transform. Thirdly, the content is fingerprinted in the TSH transform domain. At last, the encrypted and fingerprinted contents are delivered to users via hybrid multicast-unicast. The use of fingerprinting along with encryption can provide a double-layer of protection to media sharing in social networks. Theory analysis and experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Some of the state-of-art multimedia source encoders produce embedded source bit streams that upon the reliable reception of only a fraction of the total bit stream, the decoder is able reconstruct the source up to a basic quality. Reliable reception of later source bits gradually improve the decoder reconstruction quality. Examples include scalable extensions of H.264/AVC and progressive image coders such as JPEG2000. To provide an efficient protection for embedded source bit streams, a concatenated block coding mechanism using a minimum mean distortion criterion was considered in the past. Although, the original design was shown to achieve mean distortion characteristics better than that of previous research, the proposed coding structure was leading to dramatic quality fluctuations. In this paper, a modification of the original design is first presented and then the second order statistics of the distortion is taken into account in the optimization. More specifically, an extension scheme is proposed using a minimum distortion variance optimization criterion. This robust system design is tested for an image transmission scenario. Numerical results show that the proposed extension achieves significantly lower variance than the original design, while showing similar mean distortion performance using both convolutional codes and low density parity check codes.

The Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) has gained the momentum in signal processing and image compression over the last decade bringing the concept up to the level of new image coding standard JPEG2000. Thanks to many added values in DWT, in particular inherent multi-resolution nature, wavelet-coding schemes are suitable for various applications where scalability and tolerable degradation are relevant. Moreover, as we demonstrate in this paper, it can be used as a perfect benchmarking procedure for more sophisticated data compression and multimedia applications using General Purpose Graphical Processor Units (GPGPUs). Thus, in this paper we show and compare experiments performed on reference implementations of DWT on Cell Broadband Engine Architecture (Cell B.E) and nVidia Graphical Processing Units (GPUs). The achieved results show clearly that although both GPU and Cell B.E. are being considered as representatives of the same hybrid architecture devices class they differ greatly in programming style and optimization techniques that need to be taken into account during the development. In order to show the speedup, the parallel algorithm has been compared to sequential computation performed on the x86 architecture.

Advances in medical imaging technologies, particularly multi-detector Computed Tomography (CT), have resulted in substantial increase in the size of datasets. In order to reduce the cost of storage and diagnostic analysis without significant reduction in image quality, a state of the art image compression technique is required. A context based and region of interest (ROI) based approach for the compression of 3D CT images is proposed. The method is developed based on JP2000 to provide a variable level of compression in the three dimensions(x, y, and z). The proposed lossy-to-lossless method compresses multiple ROIs depending on the degrees of clinical interest. High priority areas are assigned a higher precision (up to lossless) than other areas such as background. ROIs were annotated automatically. The method is optimized and applied to the vascular images for peripheral arteries and compared with a standard medical image codec on 10 datasets regarding image quality and diagnostic performances. The average sizes of the compressed images are reduced with no remarkable impairment for the diagnostic accuracy.

The proposed lossy-to-lossless method compresses multiple ROIs depending on the degrees of clinical interest. High priority areas are assigned a higher precision (up to lossless compression) than other areas such as background. ROIs are annotated automatically. The method was optimized and applied to the vascular images from CT angiography for peripheral arteries and compared with a standard medical image codec on 10 datasets regarding image quality and diagnostic performances. The average size of the compressed images can be reduced to 61 percent with no remarkable impairment for the diagnostic accuracy.

The new generations of mobile technologies and the services, they aim to offer have been a subject of debate in the wireless world for the past two decades. In order to support the digital communication among the still growing community and from wherever their geographical location is, these three standards have been well implemented and spread all over with an unpredictable speed in China. For about a decade now in China, three major carriers China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom are providing respectively the TD- SCDMA, W-CDMA and CDMA 2000, with an important impact that influenced the China market, experiencing an unprecedented growth and success lately in terms of the increasing demand in wireless technology consumption with hardware and software.
