Smart mobile devices such as camera phones typically will be carried by people all the time. These devices are true "multimedia" devices that acquire, process, transmit and present text, image, video and audio data. However, due to the limitations in hardware and networking, multimedia applications and systems have not been adequately supported on mobile devices. With the recent developments mobile hardware, wireless network, and cloud computing, it is now the prime time for us to realize intelligent mobile device centered multimedia applications with the support of a cloud computing platform. The focus of this workshop is on exploring challenges and opportunities of intelligent multimedia technologies, applications and systems on mobile devices, especially when a media cloud computing platform can be appropriately leveraged.

Advances in digital medical imaging technologies, particularly magnetic resonance imaging and multi-detector CT (Computed Tomography), have resulted in substantial increase in the size of datasets, as a result of improvement in spatial and temporal resolution. In order to reduce the storage cost, diagnostic analysis cost and transmission time without significant reduction of the image quality, a state of the art image compression technique is required. We implemented a context-based and regions of interest (ROI) based approach to compress medical images in particular vascular images, where a high spatial resolution and contrast sensitivity is required in areas such as stenosis. The vascular image is divided into: the primary region of interest (PROI), the secondary region of interests (SROI) and the background. The PROI can be a stenosis of vessel and it is identified manually by the radiologist. The SROI is divided into other parts or regions among which the most important level is represented by vessels. The other levels are the other tissues or part of the body and the last level is the background region. The SROI is detected automatically by an in house 3D region growing algorithm. The PROI is considered as a seed for region growing. The proposed lossy-to-lossless region-based compression method is compressed these multiple ROIs at various degrees of interest and at higher precision (up to lossless) than other areas such as background. To demonstrate the result of this algorithm, this method is applied on peripheral arteries images (up to 2000 images) and the result have been compared with standard Jpeg2000 on 10 datasets. The size of compressed images can be reduced up to 67 percent.

Interactive 3D content on Internet has yet become popular due to its typically large volume and the limited network bandwidth. Progressive content transmission, or 3D streaming, thus is necessary to enable real-time content interactions. However, the heavy data and processing requirements of 3D streaming challenge the scalability of client-server delivery methods. We propose the use of peer-to-peer (P2P) networks for 3D streaming, and argue that due to the non-linear access patterns of 3D content, P2P 3D streaming is a new class of applications apart from existing media streaming and requires new investigations. We also present FLoD, the first P2P 3D streaming framework that allows clients of 3D virtual globe or virtual environment (VE) applications to obtain relevant data from other clients while minimizing server resource usage. To demonstrate how FLoD applies to real-world scenarios, we build a prototype system that adapts JPEG 2000-based 3D mesh streaming for P2P delivery. Experiments show that server-side bandwidth usage can thus be reduced, while simulations indicate that P2P 3D streaming is fundamentally more scalable than client-server approaches.

This paper experimentally examines the performance of streaming media applications over a CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network. The performance of streaming in a cellular network is tested across three different levels of mobility., two applications, and the two transport layer protocols, TCP and UDP. Findings of this study are that streaming applications are impacted more by sources of interference such as high-rise buildings than by increased velocity. Also, when the mobile client is stationary, high data rates and high video quality are consistently achieved. We also find that for the streaming applications considered, UDP streams outperform TCP streams, consistently achieving higher bandwidth.

With the advent of multicores in all processor segments including mobile, embedded, desktop and server ones, we are in the new era of multiplying computing power via scaling the number of cores. The multicore approach is more versatile and programmable than the ASIC approach. For instance, the same multicore product can be adapted to the ever-improving potpourri image processing standards. Developing ASIC modules for each standard would pose million-dollar start-up cost and time-to-market disadvantage. However, the multicore approach is a two-edge sword: Unleashing its multiplying power presents significant programming challenge!;. The harmony between the multiplying power and programming productivity is the holy grail in this field. This paper addresses the challenge in the Digital Cinema domain. This paper presents an oblivious parallelization paradigm in both compressing and decompressing images via JPEG2000 on multicore platforms with maximum productivity. This approach dramatically reduces compression and decompression time in performing JPEG2000 lossless encoding and decoding algorithms on high definition images in almost real time without any extra hardware acceleration. By boosting parallelism coverage, the high resolution images could be compressed and decompressed in near real time: 15 images decoded/encoded per second. To the best Of Our knowledge, we are the first to propose a software-based coding solution using commodity multicores to achieve near real-time performance result for JPEG2000. This cost-effective approach could be applied to digital cinema on devices with multicores.

A new metric, processing delay, has been proposed for route path selection. Processing delay, proposed by G. Bianchi, (2000) is used to calculate the performance of each node along the route. The function takes into account the number of active nodes in the vicinity of the forwarding node. Simulation experiments which have incorporated the new metric into the on-demand mobile ad hoc network protocol, dynamic source routing (DSR), have shown that the new metric has the characteristics of spreading the routes among the nodes in the network, thus minimizing congestion. The performance of the new on-demand ad hoc network, enhanced-DSR (eDSR), has shown a 20% reduction in packet delay, with marginal increase in hop counts

A medical image usually has a large amount of,data in order to get a high image quality which is crucial to support a right diagnosis. Therefore lossless compression, schemes play a key role in saving and transferring a medical image data. Since there is a trade-off between reconstructed image quality and achieved compression ratio, an optimum compression ratio is important. In this paper, we propose a distributed system for medical image trans fer using wavelet-based image coding with scalable reconstruction quality on dynamic user-defined region of interest (Rol). This proposed medical image transfer scheme adopts wavelet techniques and layered image representation structure of the JPEG2000 Part I image coding standard to provide quality refinement over specific area of the transferred image. We will compare the performance between distributed and non-distributed system. A laboratory experiment evaluating the required time to process a 1024 x 1024 pixels image shows that the distributed system require less time processing than the non-distributed system with better compression ratio.

Video broadcast services have become increasingly popular on packet-based wireless networks, such as 1xEV-DO and HSDPA which support high data rate. In this paper we propose a resource allocation algorithm for scalable video broadcast over such wireless networks. Our algorithm allocates time slots among the video layers of a scalable video and applies adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) to each video layer to maximize the sum of utilities for heterogeneous users with varying QoS requirements. It also considers competing video sessions and allocates time slots among them according to user preferences. Additionally, its polynomial time-complexity allows for online resource allocation that is necessary for real-time video services. Simulation experiments show that our algorithm outperforms a single-layer video broadcast with fixed modulation and coding (FMC), used in broadcast and multicast services (BCMCS) in the CDMA2000 system, and produce a near-optimal allocation.

On the one hand, the challenge of meeting various security requirements in the mobile and wireless environment is difficult, compared to the fixed and wired environment, because of the very nature of radio communications. On the other hand, wireless networks such as GSM, PCS and CDMA, which are predominantly circuit-switched voice networks, have been shielded from the vulnerabilities that exist in the Internet. With the introduction of the IP multimedia subsystems (IMS) solutions, data, voice and video is accessible using UMTS and CDMA2000 networks via the Internet. The current mobile equipment has the capability to work with multiple radio interfaces using heterogeneous radio access networks. Mobile subscribers have also become truly mobile since they are not constrained by mobile equipment, networks and applications. However, information between individuals has to be protected. Therefore, there exist always the notion of private and public communications. In the mobile and wireless environment, the challenge is private communications between peers over non private domains. This paper describes schemes offering secure communications between mobile nodes using virtual private networking technologies based on IP security (IPSec). In addition, mobility management is done using mobile IP along with route-optimization techniques. This paper also describes how latencies suffered by real-time traffic when traversing IPSec and mobile IP tunnels can be reduced so that real-time delay constraints can be meet.
