This paper introduces an adaptive distributed call admission control framework developed for cellular mobile networks. The main feature of the proposed framework is a more efficient support for mobile multimedia users having dynamic bandwidth requirements. This is achieved by imposing an upper bound on the experienced call dropping probability, regardless of network load changes, while maintaining a high network resource utilization. The call admission control algorithm presented in this paper involves not only the original cell (handling the new admission request) but also a cluster of neighboring cells. The neighboring cells provide significant information about their ability to support the new mobile user in the future. This distributed process allows the original cell to make a more clear-sighted admission decision for the new user. The cell changes the acceptance threshold dynamically to maintain a target call dropping probability. Simulations are provided to show the improvements obtained using our framework.

Paging is a process to locate mobile terminals in wireless systems, which is initiated by the users calling from a fixed or mobile environment. In particular, the paging issue in IMT-2000 systems is very important to maintain the wireless services to the mobile subscribers who are allowed to roam in different systems instead of stand-alone systems. We introduce a predictive paging scheme based on the concept of a boundary location register. We develop the corresponding signaling messages to describe the call delivery procedure of intersystem roaming. Since paging costs are associated with bandwidth utilization and delays influence call setup time, they are used as metrics in evaluating the performance of the proposed paging scheme.

We have seen the evolution of cellular networks and observed the impact mobile phones had created on the way we work and live. Past research issues related to cellular networks include handoff, connection. and location management, GSM, D-AMPS, and CDPD arc clear examples of how these networks could support voice and data services seamlessly for mobile users.

The multiple access with reduced handshake (MARCH) protocol utilizes the broadcast characteristics of an omnidirectional antenna to reduce the number of control messages required to transmit a data packet in multihop ad hoc networks. In MARCH, the RTS-CTS handshake is used only by the first hop of a route to forward data packets while for the rest it utilizes a new CTS-only handshake. Since fewer control packets are transmitted, the probability of packet collision is reduced and therefore the channel throughput is increased. Simulation results demonstrate that MARCH outperforms MAC protocols that employ only the RTS-CTS handshake.

This paper deals with the performance evaluation of a scalable single-tier routing protocol designed for operation in mobile ad hoc networking environments. The protocol under consideration is based on the superposition of link-state and position-based routing, and it employs a simplified way of localizing routing overhead, without having to resort to complex, multiple-tier routing organization schemes. Specifically we study the protocol's scalability measured by the routing overhead, by calculating the average number of routing packets per node, as a function of the network size. The obtained results demonstrate that the average number of routing packets transmitted by a node is practically insensitive to the network size. This clearly indicates that our protocol possesses the scalability property which is very critical in mobile ad hoc networking environments, without having to resort to complicated and vulnerable hierarchical approaches. Moreover we compare the performance of our protocol with a non-realistic "ideal routing protocol" where packets are routed assuming continuous and accurate knowledge of the exact node position. Specifically we study the "route distortion" introduced by our protocol due to inaccuracies in the positions of other hosts known by the local host, and compare the number of hops needed to route data under our approach against the corresponding results obtained for the "ideal routing". The results indicate that for various mobility scenarios our protocol has nearly optimum data routing characteristics. Finally we discuss various design parameters related to the protocol's operation and we investigate their impact on the protocol's performance and effectiveness.

The GUIDE system has been developed to provide city visitors with a hand-held context-aware tourist guide. The system has been successfully deployed in a major tourist destination and is currently at the stage where it is publicly available to visitors who wish to explore the city. Reaching this stage has been the culmination of a number of distinct research efforts. In more detail, the development of GUIDE has involved: capturing a real set of application requirements, investigating the properties of a cell-based wireless communications technology in a built-up environment and deploying a network based on this technology around the city, designing and populating an information model to represent attractions and key buildings within the city, prototyping the development of a distributed application running across portable GUIDE units and stationary cell-servers and finally, evaluating the entire system during an extensive field-trial study. This paper reports on our results in each of these areas. We believe that through our work on the GUIDE project we have produced a blueprint for the development of interactive context-aware systems that should be of real value to those in the community who wish to develop such systems in a practical environment.

The position-guided sliding-window routing (PSR) protocol is a scalable single-tier routing protocol designed for operation in mobile ad hoc networking environments. Previous work has demonstrated that the PSR protocol possesses the scalability property and provides for very efficient routing thus being an extremely attractive solution for large scale ad hoc networks. PSR is based on is the superposition of link-state forwarding for local destinations and position-based forwarding for remote destinations, and the underlying principle behind its development is to reduce the network routing overhead by making the accuracy of the routing information in each node inversely proportional to its distance from any other node in the network. The use of multiple zones provides a method of implementing that principle in a discrete way. By selecting appropriately the number of zones and the corresponding radii of the zones our approach intends to control the routing overhead generation and propagation by making the overhead generation rate and propagation distance directly proportional to the amount of change in a node's geographic position. This paper investigates the dependence of the optimum zone configuration (i.e. number of zones and corresponding radii) on network configuration and node behavior (i.e. mobility), in order to evaluate the protocol's sensitivity to those parameters and provide guidelines for determining the optimal zone configuration for efficient operation of the PSR protocol.

The audiovisual library of the future will be based on computerized access to digitized documents. In this communication, we address the user interface issues which will arise from this new situation. One cannot simply transfer an user interface designed for the piece by piece production of some audiovisual presentation and make it a tool for accessing full-length movies in an electronic library. One cannot take a digital sound editing tool and propose it as a means to listen to a musical recording. In our opinion, when computers are used as mediations to existing contents, document representation-based user interfaces are needed. With such user interfaces, a structured visual representation of the document contents is presented to the user, who can then manipulate it to control perception and analysis of these contents. In order to build such manipulable visual representations of audiovisual documents, one needs to automatically extract structural information from the documents contents. In this communication, we describe possible visual interfaces for various temporal media, and we propose methods for the economically feasible large scale processing of documents. Welcome to the third International Conference on Management of multimedia Networks and Services (MMNS'2000) in Fortaleza (Brazil)! The first MMNS was held in Montreal ( Canada) in july 1997 and the second MMNS was held in Versailles (France) in November 1998. The MMNS conference takes place every year and a half and is aimed to be a truly international event by bringing together researchers and practitioners from all around the world and by organising the conference each time in a different continent/country. Over the past several years, there has been a considerable amount of research within the fields of multimedia networking and network management. Much of that work has taken place within the context of managing Quality-of Service in broadband integrated services digital networks such as the A TM, and more recently in IP-based networks, to respond to the requirements of emerging multimedia applications. A TM networks were designed to support multimedia traffic with diverse characteristics and can be used as the transfer mode for both wired and wireless networks. A new set of Internet protocols is being developed to provide better quality of service, which is a prerequisite for supporting multimedia applications. multimedia applications have a different set of requirements, which impacts the design of the underlying communication network as well as its management. Several QoS management mechanisms intervening at different layers of the communication network are required including QoS-routing, QoS-based transport, QoS negotiation, QoS adaptation, FCAPS management, and mobility management.
